Alberta doesn’t have a common-law marriage statute, it has something called the “Adult Interdependence Relationships Act” instead. That Act’s time requirement isn’t 6 months, it’s 3 years.

What most likely happened in the OP’s story was a form of “greenmail”. A type of blackmail, greenmail is both legal and morally reprehensible. Greenmail presents the target with two bad outcomes, one greater and the other lesser. The target naturally chooses to least bad option.

The practice began on Wall Street naturally and involved buying enough stock in a company to be able to threaten to make substantial changes at the corporate level. The company in question could either accept those changes or buy back the stock at a premium price thus ending the threat. Because the changes often involve gutting the company in various ways, most choose to pay for the stock at a premium.

The woman in the OP’s story gave her target the choice of being sued under Alberta’s “Adult Interdependence Relationships Act” and taking his chances in court or paying her off with $50,000 dollars. Her target decided to settle and bought her off with $30,000.

Don’t be a fool. Check out the law where you live. Don’t believe some bit of “everybody knows” bulls~~~ or urban myth no matter how well intentioned that advice may be.

Get the facts. You life is too important to wing it.

As OldBill states.
The “legal requirements” for the relationship lottery in Canada vary from province to province to territory. I have reiterated this in several of my older posts, with links to Government sites that also reinforce what I am saying.

There are several factors that eliminate the “laws” in family court, and I am not exaggerating about that.

1. Dependency, interdependence is just the start. Just check out some of the “legal” judgements from Ontario about “girlfriends” getting alimony.
FFS we even have laws that allow immigrants (legal or not) to win cash and prizes from Canadian men if they claim “dependence” with him

2. In Loco Parentis (In place of the parent). The second, and I do mean the second she walks her womb turd into your home. This comes into effect. In a court of law it is submitted that “You have established your willingness to be a parent” and support them.

3. A piece of mail with her name on it with your address alone establishes residency. Get three separate pieces of mail, and surprise, surprise, surprise, that is irrefutable proof she lives there.

4. Property left in your home can also establish residency.

5. Her claiming residency is enough to legitimize her claim alone (You know, she said she lives with you).

All of this is designed to remove the parasite from the government teat and place it directly on to men.

Yep, don’t think for a second we aren’t loaded with white knights, blue pillers, and manginas down here. That little sweet act Southern Belles put on is exactly that. That being said, you should always be skeptic of unsubstantiated stories from men as well as women, where the speaker presents themselves as wholly innocent and an oppressed victim.

Life experience has taught me there is generally more to the story than is being let on.

Again, avoid marriage and cohabitation. I avoid women altogether, I’m certainly not telling anyone that they should ignore this and start shacking up. But don’t get too worked up either and take it as some sort of gospel. It’s just missing too much information.

We have it here in Oz, it’s called a ‘de facto relationship’. It’s a disgrace. A guy from school inherited a few hundred thousand $$$AUD and was planning on opening a pub and living the dream with it. His live-in girlfriend claimed de facto status and took him for everything.

(Then again he was a bully and asshole in school so I never wept for him, but people I have kept in touch with say he is now a good bloke).

Very Well Stated, and while I can definitely see how and why a little princess would go after a man’s funds after a relationship and be awarded them by a rigged court system, it such seems like there’s more to the story.

If this story is factual, or at even a believable fabrication, there just needs to be more meat to the story. Unfortunately or fortunately, life has made me very skeptical about many/most things.
