Rennie: Sadly, many shortwave broadcasters have gone off the air, moving their transmissions over to the Internet. As well, radio frequency interference on the bands is increasing. I can remember listening to stations out of Latin America on 60 metres during the mid-1980s, but that’s hard to do now. Now I make my own noise. I have a preference for satellites and I’ve worked stations as far away as Hawaii and Finland from central Alberta, weather permitting. A few years ago, during an opening on 10 metres, I had contacts in Texas and Mississippi on single sideband simply mag-mounting an antenna to the roof of my car and setting up my rig inside. Not bad for 50 W.
Yeah the CBC trashed the only high voltage site in Canada, just about a year ago. I was fortunate to have had the privilege to have seen it in operation before the internet steam rolled everything. Look up “Spectres of Shortwave” for details. I can imagine with all the electronic devices now, it probably messes up the whole radio thing and companies are trying to grab more and more spectrum for themselves.
The CBC hexxed themselves by doing that, ever since they’ve been plagued with scandals, loss of hockey rights, budget cuts and bad management decisions, now they are on the verge of losing their HQ in Toronto. Wonder how long VOA will survive before they get canned too.
I really don’t like how the internet has wiped out pretty much all traditional means of communications. If something happens to the internet there will be nothing to fall back on.
Rennie:
Unfortunately, many of those transmitters are quite old and spare parts, understandably, are hard to come by. As well, those installations are real hay-burners and need a lot of power to put out a signal. So, for many of these broadcasters, it’s cheaper to scrap it all.
Was that RCI Sackville that you were referring to? I remember hearing that it was closed down, decommissioned, and then demolished. On the other hand, CKZU, which carries the Vancouver area feed of Radio One (the rest of B. C. gets a slightly different program) is still active on 49 metres, which I can sometimes hear in central Alberta.
Things aren’t looking good for VOA, either. I believe Delano, California’s long gone, though I’m not sure about Greenville, North Carolina. According to Glenn Hauser’s “World of Radio” podcast, there’s been talk of putting Radio Australia on the chopping block as well. It’s a pity, but, then, there’s not much left worth listening to on the bands any more, unless one’s looking for an obscure station.
Anonymous11@QWV: I remember my Dad’s old Tram CB Radio total tube bliss. Oh that glow. He had a 500 watt linear hooked in line too. The damn rig looked like a Christmas tree in the room at night.
Anonymous42We had a fisher tube FM high fidelity stereo, it got hot to the touch, just like the old TV’s, I remember getting tubes at radio shack, they had a tube tester, so you brought all your tubes to check the parameters and replace the weak ones, they burned out like light bulbs. Marshall amplifiers are still tubed (I think), reason being that electronic interference is not able to interfere, unless it’s an EMP.

Yes it was the RCI Sackville site, it’s all gone now, except the building itself, towers were pushed over, equipment scrapped. They had various models there over the years RCA’s(40’s-’80), Collins(70’s-’01), Harris(80’s-’12) and ABBs and Thomcasts(’95-’12).
Edward R. Murrow (Greenville, NC) is still around, but the only English broadcasts to North America are “special english” which is presented in this rather annoying slow spoken format. I don’t think it’s long for the world, the equipment there is stone age. I haven’t spent any time listening to radio Australia since they started up with some womens rights nonsense or some such whinging.
I’ve tried to pick up Radio One, but I only ever hear static.
CP and MG-Tower:
Ah, the old tube rigs…. I started with SW listening using my parents’ old Grundig console stereo. It included not just SW bands but FM broadcast as well. There weren’t too many solid-state components in it, but it could pull in stations like VOA, HCJB out of Quito, Deutsche Welle, and the BBC in the days before many of those stations had regional relays.
By the way, I know of some hams in the local area who prefer the old vacuum tube boat anchors.
Rennie:
Radio One has largely left the AM/medium wave band. CKZU, and its sister station in Newfoundland and Labrador, were set up to reach people in remote locations such as fishermen or forestry workers along the B. C. coast or the Atlantic outports. Most of those communities are out in the middle of nowhere and are accessible only by sea or by air. Not everyone can receive satellite signals, so SW is still the best way for them to find out what’s going on in the outside world.
I’d like to take a minute right here and discuss Defense Mechanisms. This is where you protect yourself from the truth, usually while denying what you’re really doing. Freud developed his defense mechanisms basically as a thesis on how civilization is created. That is, we have to learn to control ourselves to fit in with society. We need to learn to control our urges and childhood is a series of tests until we become an adult, knowing how to eat and poop.
People are basically animals, according to Freud, and only a little more wiser. Thus we are like the animals and have animal behaviors. Some of us are sadistic, for example. Society doesn’t like sadism so the person is forced to deal with it. He may chose one of several defense mechanisms. If all goes well, that person can be a model citizen, complete with courage, chastity, and everything else we admire.
Also take note that something we don’t like, say incest desire or sadism, can turn someone into a good person. For example, a lust for your mother can teach you how to give up on things you want. Freud was able to do this very well, and that gave him the freedom he needed to dig into people’s minds and figure out why they couldn’t give up on things.
Now, for my point. My point is that there are different maturity levels for defense mechanisms. At the basic levels are things like denial. We’ll move onto projection and others, until we reach the highest ones.
I propose that this is one of those levels where we’re using Sublimation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sublimation_(psychology)):
In psychology, sublimation is a mature type of defense mechanism where socially unacceptable impulses or idealizations are consciously transformed into socially acceptable actions or behavior, possibly resulting in a long-term conversion of the initial impulse.
I think it’s pretty obvious that somebody is converting their sexual urges for children into a system to get their jollies rolled without it looking like that. They want to have a sexual interaction with children.
According to the DSM, a common argument among pedophiles is that they’re liberating the children. Of course, what they’re doing is damaging the children and ruining their ability to judge healthy and non-healthy sexuality. They’re taught to interact sexually with people… at least I think that’s what that means. It looks like that might be the justification going on here.
Further more, pedophiles like to destroy the innocence of children. That’s one of the most precious things a child has, and they love to destroy it by screwing up their sexuality. We all know children have no defense. Their innocence makes them vulnerable.
You can thank all the weird political correctness and postmodernity, and our society’s weirdness for failing to stop this.
MGT: The really f~~~ed up part is that they don’t even teach kids to learn or think for themselves. They just regurgitate PC filth, magically pass and outsource their thinkin’ to the experts on TV.
They would have put me on Ritalin had it been available. I was engineering safe working flame throwers at age 14. Those were the days too as we’d torch Palmetto Roaches at 35 feet with it.
^^^
THIS SOOO SOO SOOO F~~~ING MUCH!I believe that this is mainly due to one factor, of which the reason behind it is that the education system is ran by women.
And, scientifically in comparison to men, women have absolutely no room for thought, only regurgitation : http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2005/01/050121100142.htmHeck, the only way that women know how to learn is through f~~~ing regurgitation.
Fyi, grey matter = processing; white = bandwidth, AKA, regurgitate women vast amounts of information ( mainly useless ) without thinking.

Let me explain this a little more with Math 😛Say you are in a conversation, and someone says, “hello,” you then need to come up with a response, and fast, as to not leave them hanging or give them the wrong impression.
With a woman, those words, “hello” will zip right through to her brain and processing will begin, HOWEVER! because she has so much excess bandwidth and most definitely a lack of discipline other bits of information will continue to flow in as her brain trys to process the words. Finally, she will respond with “hello.” Then this is where things get a bit nasty; the other person will then continue on with something else such as, “and how are you doing today?”
BUT!!! Because of that excess bandwidth working away, she has now just received a s~~~ load of useless information, such as what shoes you are wearing. HOWEVER! Remember, she does not have that much processing power, so as a result, thoughtless responses will be blurted out as to keep up the appearances of thoughtful communication. While in reality, she will be processing the brand of shoes that the other person is wearing. With a guy, those words, “hello” will be slowly sent through to his brain, but because the bandwidth is low, it can take a while for the transfer to complete; so doesn’t it make sense to do some pre-processing on that information? So, by the time the response finishes loading into the processing portion, a response is basically ready and then sent out; as it that response leaves, the brain then needs something to do, so it begins to double check and recheck the response until new information arrives. Because of this low bandwidth, we are naturally forced to put immense amounts of thought into our responses / actions as our brains have nothing better to do.
Now, this is where it gets scary.
Men have 6.5x the amount of processing capacity compared to women.
Women have 10x the amount of bandwidth compared to men.Let us say that a women enters a room and starts sending information to her processing portion as fast as possible, at 10x speed.
Now, let us assume that she has absolutely no self control, no ability to filter, and must process all of this information at once and blurt it back out 1 second later. So, for 10x of data, 1x of processing was performed. Now, let us say that a man enters a room and starts sending information to his processing portion as fast as possible, at 1x speed.
Now, let us assume the same, that he must blurt it back out 1 second later. So, for 1x of data, 6.5x of processing was performed. As a result, for every 1x of data that a women sends to her brain, 0.1x of processing is performed, and for every 1x of data that a man sends to his brain, 6.5x of processing is performed.
Meaning that overall, on average, assuming that responses are blurted out immediately after 1 second, men put in 65 times MORE THOUGHT into what they do in comparison to women.
Let us take this one step further, and say that 100x of data is to be processed by both the man and the woman.
The woman then spends 10 seconds of time taking in the 100x of data and performs 10 seconds worth of processing resulting in 1x of processing performed.
The man then spends 100 seconds of time taking in the 100x of data and performs 100 seconds worth of processing resulting in 650x of processing performed. In which case, because of the low bandwidth and high processing power, the man was forced to put in at least 650 times the amount of thought into whatever they were thinking about.
Now, by some off chance that a woman does grow a pair and develops some mental discipline, she will still need to put in 6.5 times the amount of processing time to produce the same results as a man… and it will be painfully difficult due to the lack of self discipline and no natural constraints on bandwidth to keep her focused.
This is why men have invented basically EVERYTHING in the modern world.
Sorry for the off topic rant btw 😛
But its the truth, and women really should not be in control of our education system 😛
My Goal: To Leave Society.
Back towards the topic. I saw this today.
Former Ontario deputy education minister Benjamin Levin pleaded guilty to three of seven child porn-related offenses in a Finch Ave. court Tuesday afternoon – including counseling an adult to sexually assault a child.
The former tenured U of T education professor and member of Premier Kathleen Wynne’s transition team pleaded guilty to one count of possession of child pornography, one count of making written child pornography and one count of counseling a sexual assault, all laid in July 2013 following a police investigation that spanned New Zealand and Ontario.
Levin, 63, has said he was “deeply ashamed” of his actions and was seeking character letters that could be entered at his sentence.
The counseling a sexual assault apparently comes from an undercover RCMP officer. Ben counseled her in how to groom her (fictitious) children for sex and also apparently asked her if she “would hurt them to please him”. Jail is too good.
Just a little tidbit from a Professor in England.
Political philosopher Adam Swift (Warwick University) wants parents who read to their children at night to feel guilty because less fortunate children don’t have the same advantage. He also says “having a loving family is an unfair advantage.”

Lazarus Long:
Such idiotic thinking is one reason why the academic tenure system needs to be dismantled and put into the dustbin. Never have I read such irresponsible rubbish from someone who’s supposedly well-educated.
QWV I completely agree, I want to see tenure removed and real evaluations given. Then I want the evaluations to determine raises and whether they keep them employed.
Of course this is yet another ringing endorsement for homeschooling.
