Your Corporate Masters Do Not Care If You Live Or Die
If they can get away with it, they will let you die instead of spending money on your safety.This story is true. Only the names have been changed to protect the innocent.
1. The Incident.
Once upon a time not so long ago, a lower-middle-management friend of mine was hard at work in his office. A team of firemen burst in. They were wearing gas masks and full firefighting gear.
“What are you doing here?” They asked.
Their voices were muffled by their gas masks. But he understood, took the hint, and evacuated. The parking lot was full of those who got the word and left first. Others were trickling out of the building behind my friend as the firemen rousted them.
It was not a fire by the way. The alarm was caused by an electrical failure in an equipment room which set off a gas alarm. It did no harm except to summon the fire department.
It turned out the fire alarm’s bells & sirens were broken due to an electrical failure. They had been broken for two years. Management knew this. They put a ‘facilities request’ in the system, declared “problem solved.” (And, no doubt, departed on time to meet the wife for drinks at the club as usual.) The facilities team put it in last place in their backlog. In the meantime, upper-management instructed middle-management to do something. The latter instituted a phone tree to notify everyone in case of fire alarms.
Obviously, there were overlooked flaws in their plan.
2. Corporation’s Response.
A few weeks after The Incident, a safety audit team arrived from an independent consulting firm hired by the company to do its thing on all the buildings. My friend got put in charge of following them around and filling out ‘facilities requests’ for all the fixes they recommended. (He found out the Fire Marshal had gotten in upper management’s faces. Management had to listen — the Marshal threatened to condemn the place — and so the consulting firm got hired.)
What they found was:
* The alarms were working and so were the smoke detectors.
– They were fixed the weekend after the incident.
* Fire extinguishers were missing or misplaced.
– Some areas had none, some were gone.
– One guy used a fire extinguisher as a door stop! (It didn’t have a wall mounting bracket, so why shouldn’t he? At least he knew where to find it.)
* Fire drills — none in recent memory.
* Vending machines under a staircase had to be moved. (I never figured this one out. It seems like a good use of wasted space to me.)
* There was a very long list of frank safety violations and lower priority recommendations in addition to the above highlights. Including:
– installing fire stops in holes between walls
– removing certain highly flammable furnishings
– relocating electrical outlets (Another one I never figured out.)
– improve ventilation in restrooms (I’ve been in one, and I figure they were right.)
– etc. (long list)
* The upper management office building was largely free of safety violations, and their restrooms were well ventilated.
– What a remarkable coincidence.3. The Remedy.
What management did was:
* Institute a schedule for combined alarm testing and fire drills.
* New fire extinguishers for all! … Except where there was one already.
* The vending machines disappeared.
– From then on, it’s bring your own from home or hike to the cafeteria if you can get away for a half hour.
* The rest of the ‘facilities requests’ were
– submitted for the audit team’s approval
– shown to the Fire Marshal and somebody from the city building department as proof of “intent to comply” with the fire code and building code
– submitted to the facilities management dept. for action …
– Problem solved!4. Final Outcome.
None of the remaining ‘facilities requests’ were so much as started a year later.
My friend was still the “manager in charge.” Thus, he asked his boss (upper-middle-management with office in same building): “It’s been a year. Why haven’t the ‘facilities requests’ been completed? Have you heard anything, boss?”
His boss got angry and chewed him out — all the while pretending he didn’t know what my friend was talking about and never mind having heard a thing from on high.
My friend never mentioned it again, not to his boss anyway. The company still has not spent a penny on all those facilities upgrades.
5. Epilog.
The company requires my friend to take separate courses in diversity, sexual harassment, and how to do manager-subordinate relations. It is not optional.
The company does not offer courses in workplace safety.

Anonymous11Great story RoyDal. It’s so typical as corporations are typically run by skinflints except when it comes to what they want then they spare no expense for corporate jets and five star hotels for themselves. In fact, working for “The Man” is a lot like dealing with women.
I’ve been s~~~ canned after two corporate buy outs after stints of 11 and 12 years respectively while literally killing myself to try satisfy those sociopaths. The last time it happened was right at the bottom of the great recession. I was in a redundant position which got transferred to India and the parent company’s corporate HQ. I actually have two different career skills both of which pay well and were relevant to my former employer’s new owner so I could have been re-purposed instead of being thrown out into the worst job market in 80 years. I’m kind of glad I’m gone though as the new owners are a bunch of micromanaging PC nazis so I’m better off gone. Basically, they were just getting my salary off the books before they closed the deal, and they gave me a very s~~~ty severance package to boot especially considering how much money the owners made in the sale w/o the cost of having me there being included in the final sales price.
I’m now self-employed, and I so enjoy the freedom of not having to attend diversity training or worrying if some feminist is going to report me to a stupid HR drone. I recently had an opportunity to get hired in another corporate job, but I just can’t deal with the bulls~~~ that comes with that environment. I don’t trust them anymore, yet they demand 24/7 loyalty from us.
The funny thing is that one of the executives at my former employer utilizes my services periodically because I can take care of him much more quickly than the equivalent infrastructure within the Borg corporation that took them over. He also told me the real reason why I was fired too which really helped me psychologically as I am phenomenally good at what I do.
It didn’t take long after I finished my B. Sc. to realize that my loyalty to my bosses extends only to the next paycheque, if there is one. Once those cheques stop coming, so does my loyalty.
RoyDal this is not surprising. big companies are like women they expect loyalty from the worker without giving any back. I worked for Baldor electric. They made it a point to tell me upon hiring how proud they were being an American owned company. After 7 1/2 years they sold out to interest from the Netherlands. Good post by the way.
I was bound to be misunderstood, and I laugh at those who misunderstand me. Kind mockery at the well intentioned, but unfettered cruelty towards those would be prison guards of my creative possibilities. This so as to learn as much from misunderstanding as from understanding. Taking pleasure in worthy opponents and making language fluid and flowing like a river yet pointed and precise as a dagger. Contradicts the socialistic purpose of language and makes for a wonderful linguistic dance, A verbal martial art with constant parries that hone the weapon that is the two edged sword of my mouth.
If I can “like” this post more I would.

Unions have alot of similiar issues. One of the workers, at a nuke plant I was working in, got radioactive cobalt shoved into his skin by Rad Protection and the company blamed it all on him.
He was sent into a highly radioactive area, and the Rad Pros screwed up on their sweep. He got contaminated. They stripped him down and scrubbed him with metal brillow pads, and in doing so scrubbed radioactive cobalt into his skin. They brought in a speaker saying it wasn’t the companies fault and all that b.s. I don’t know what happened to him since.

Working on heavy equipment, I was near a guy who rolled his hand between drive rolls. The female assisting him could not physically back up the gear drive and she wouldn’t get out of my way. So I finally pulled her aside and backed him out of the machine. She freaked. It was later determined that she had started the machine while he was working in it!!? The end result was that she got time off with pay for the mental anguish she suffered. The guy also got several months off but he became a left hander. I was thanked for doing my job and then I had to cover for both of them while they were recovering….?! If I was boss, I would have fired the woman, sued her to pay the guys medical bills and then made every woman in the company physically back up a machine or lose their jobs. I quit soon after this event.
