Have more then a passing interest in off grid living. Though I am not doing so right now.

This guy built a cabin for 30k, not including the price of the land. IF you are willing to learn some skills and put in the sweat time you could cut the cost. He hired people to do several parts.

Even some off grid communities. I have read people looking for help off grid, depending on what you can bring to the table free land as payment.

Almost nothing you can not can or dry for later use.

gardening is very local. But I have found containers is the way to go here, able to control the heat/water/sun is a bit easier. Grow bags being my go to.

I’d love to be off grid.

On UK tV on free view we have tv programmes about it -I’ve been watching:

    Building Alaska.

    Building off Grid

    Life below Zero

    Ray Mears survival and bushcraft

In UK you can still find some stuff worth watching-90% is garbage though like in USA.

Along with the so-called “tiny house” movement I’m starting to seriously study this with an eye towards my retirement.

Talk about going ghost. I also share an interest in going off-grid. Hell, I am thinking about getting a transportable skill, then buying a fifth-wheel RV and just traveling the country.

I expect we will see more and more men going this way.

WHAT? What do I do with this?
Oh, you preapply it so it repels the bears. Just like bug spray…

I respect the off grid movement. As a lifelong city dweller, I wonder if I’d be any good at it. I have my doubts.

I don't hate women. I just feel better when they're not around.

I probably wouldn’t go truly off-grid – I’d connect to water and mains electricity.

If I can buy the land, I seriously want to have 3 shipping containers welded together and build a home out of them. A lot of BS to go through though as the UK isn’t great for self or off-grid building.

    3 x 8x40ft container
approx. 89m2 area to work with

    Master and guest bedroom only.
Solar panels. Super insulated. Huge windows for solar gain. Mechanical Ventilation Heat Recovery.

    Land + build within £75k.

Looking up some off grid content found this interesting. At least local people offer free pallet wood all the time. It is very basic, but it could be used as hunting or fishing camp. Also give an idea what you need to change to make a bigger unit to live in.

Buy land. Pour a slab. Park an airstream on it.

Oh f~~~ I have to try that line on someone some day.

Shipping containers are not the way to go, brother. You’re facing a nightmare to flash out the walls, floors, ceilings, and whatnot. Cutting holes for windows, ventilation, plumbing, wiring, and other purposes is a nightmare too.

I know a man who bought a few thinking they would make for an easy workshop. This guy does his own welding, carpentry, wiring, plumbing, etc. and was still a quite an effort for him. He just uses them to store vehicles now and replaced them with a metal framed kit.
