I was reading an article on-line that says that the Amish have a zero percent rate of divorce. I mean people are people and I find this a little hard to believe. Could it be that if you’re Amish and you want out of your marriage bad enough you must leave the community and then seek a divorce? I can’t see that just being Amish guarantees you a happy marriage.
Are there any ex-Amish on this forum who can set us straight on this? How would an Amish divorce work? What is an Amish marriage really like? Some of us ‘English’ would like to know…
The Amish are Alsatian Anabaptists and can marry only in the faith. It is possible there is a 0% divorce rate merely because they believe as an article of faith that vows made before God must be kept. (It really is that simple)
I don’t think we have any Amish here. Social pressure keeps them in line. The women do theit part and the men do their part.
However, I’d bet $1k that if a Amish husband was abusing his wife, the community would give him a 2×4 party.

Alsatian Anabaptists
There are also the Hutterites, Mennonites, and many modern-day Baptist churches that would identify with Anabaptist traditions.

While not many in the Midwest, there are communities near Iowa City and Oelwein Iowa, visited them last summer.

In a skinny minute and he might wind up fertilizing sunflowers or feeding pigs. The Sicilian or Columbian way of course.

If I read the information correctly.
If an Amish individual decides to divorce/annul the marriage. The individual is excommunicated and exiled/banished from the Amish community.
Ergo said “divorced’ person is no longer recognized as Amish and its status as an Amish person is irrelevant/non existent.
Thereby allowing a 0% “divorce” rate to be accurate/substantiated in that community. However, that divorce would/should be counted in the civil divorce statistics due to Civil Law taking precedence over religious law.
Caveat

Well we know that some Amish do leave. I read that young Amish men and women are sent out into the ‘real’ world to have a look around. They must then decide on their own whether or not to stay in the community. Apparently most do decide to stay.
I’m guessing that if you’re Amish and want a divorce you must leave the community to get that divorce. The ‘0% Divorce’ claim sounds a little fishy to me. Maybe getting a divorce automatically gets you punted from the community. This is what I’m curious about…

Thereby allowing a 0% “divorce” rate to be accurate/substantiated in that communitBingo! Thanks for that. It was as I had suspected. So the 0% Amish divorce rate is ‘technically’ correct. You can get a divorce but it also means that you’re no longer Amish.
So much for the “promise to God” analogy…
Well lets not be hasty, how many as a % of the Amish community actually leave—that would be relevant to know.
Q: What goes “Clip-Clop, Clip-Clop, Clip-Clop, ‘Bang’, Clip-Clop, Clip-Clop”?
A: An Amish drive-by… 😀

I pictured that..Unlike in the HBO Series Banshee.

When I lived in PA, Amish were arrested for selling drugs out of the buggies.

I read that the ones who leave is a low percentage but I never saw a number. I also read that the ones who leave on a ‘trial’ basis can be out for as long as a year and they still come back. Now I’m curious how many leave because they want a divorce. I’m guessing that a divorce might be a major incentive to get out…

The Amish sound pretty tough. I certainly wouldn’t want to mess with an Amish drug gang…
Since the Amish reject modern technology, we’ll never see an Amish man on this forum. 0% divorce rate in any community sounds juryrigged to me.

No, it’s not likely that there are any Amish on the net. However, we know that there are those who do leave the community. I was thinking that there might be an ex-Amish MGTOW somewhere here.
However the Hutterites are on-line, They must be like ‘Anabaptists gone wild’ or something…
0% might be cooking the books somehow, but I don’t doubt a society where people have bigger families and nobody gains financially in a divorce simply has less divorce. That is part of why we have so much divorce here…a woman just has to marry for a few years, pop out one kid, then she can divorce, hope back on the carousel, and get divorce cash and prizes that will ensure she is decently provided for at least until the kid is 18 provided she was smart enough to get knocked up by a dude with assets and/or a good job. Well to be fair…they don’t even have to be married to cash in on a guy, but being married helps them for a bigger pay day.
It’s a lie based on the “No True Scotsman” fallacy.
Any Amish woman who files for divorce is called “not truly Amish” and kicked out of the community. So are the poor guys they divorce, who did nothing to deserve it.
The truth is AWALT.
I kinda suspected that the 0% divorce rate was a little bit phony. The bottom line is that people are people. The Amish have their problems just like any other group…
