Hello brothers, it seems I am in need of some advice, as I have run out of options while living in this hell of a state with a retard for a governor. I have been looking for work for what seems an eternity (real time 2 1/2 years) and have not even been given an opportunity to apply any of the various skills I have acquired. I am now considering signing my soul away for 6 years and joining the coastguard, I needed money a year ago and have not been hired to any of the hundreds of places I have applied (although I have gotten a few interviews). So any advice moving forward for a guy with only $6 to his name and a dependent (my disabled, veteran father)?

Can’t add much to the advice of Stealthy. I can tell you I lived in Florida many years ago and could not wait to leave. Besides the oppressive heat and insects, as a young man in my 30’s the job market and commensurate pay was awful. I grew up in NYC so I was used to high wages. Been living in a very large city in the Midwest for over 20 years and despite the tough winters, I like it much better and my career took off after arriving here.
Florida is tough on the young. Good luck and keep us posted!

Do you have problems being hired in general
or do you have problems being hired in the field you have acquired skills for?

This probably won’t help you in the short term but try for a state job.

I had a similar experience myself. I loved living in NYC (the capital of the world) but had to move to Florida because I couldn’t afford the NY rents. Florida doctors stink because this is the place for them to come if they can’t make in NY. Their patients are to old and senile to tell the difference and they figure to die soon anyway. IN NYC my primary could take care of almost all my needs but here they love to send their patients to their specialist buddies who then refer you to several other sub-specialists. It also stinks for the old who don’t have a lot of money because social services suck here too. The government doesn’t give a s~~~ about the poor here.

Man, I was in a similar hole 6 years ago. I lost a high paying corporate IT job after my company got acquired.

The same story as you 15 months and hundreds of resumes with no results. It’s frustrating as hell.

I ended up becoming self-employed and not sure if your skills are amenable to that. You also don’t start making money immediately and work your ass off 24/7/365. I just got off of a phone call with the CTO of a company one of my clients uses concerning a technical issue he and I are devising a work around solution for a very high pressure problem that is neither of our faults, but it is our problem.

Never underestimate the power of networking. I’ve got roots established where I live and went to a school that opens many doors for me locally. You lose that if you move. However, moving opens up a plethora of potential employers for your skills. Do the right thing for your situation.

I agree, Florida sucks ass especially the further South one goes. I’ve lived there long enough to figure that one out. Yet, some people worship it. Go figure….

I live in South Florida, I love living near the beach. Yes, I agree about job opportunities, not that great. I am self employed and hope to grow my digital marketing business. I would suggest starting an online business which requires some money, so for now keep looking for a job, don’t give up.

@ray: I’m in Coastal Georgia so I’m pretty much like Florida and even grow Oranges too, though South Florida has way better beaches and clearer water 😉 It’s the overly geriatric thing that spooks me about South Florida.

I’ve heard from others about the job situation there too. My father’s family came up from The Keys to Georgia.

I often thought if all was lost…meaning…too old to work, poor and so on…

I would find a deep forest to go live in, like a hermit deep in the woods in maine.

Hey Stealthy, you can live in tent city, just down the street from C-Pig, there’s free parking in front C-Pig’s, and he won’t notice you stealing his eggs, just leave the shells behind so he thinks the chickens did it…

Sorry about the delayed reply, thank you all for your sentiment.

I am a relatively healthy, (Hispanic) African-American male in my early 20’s. I have no formal training in anything beyond fast food service and am a high school graduate. I have coding experience in HTML and CSS; as well as graphic design and media management (with 7 months of experience), all self taught. I have a pipe dream of becoming the coach of a league of legends team and a realistic goal of being the CEO of my own company dealing in competitive video gaming/real world news. I do have the ability to read and apply. I do not own a vehicle or have a drivers license (I do have a learners permit however). I am not aware of tools I have access to (unless you are talking about literal spanners, hammers, etc. of which I have access to). I live about 40 minutes from the nearest large city to me and I currently live a ghetto neighborhood (drugs and prostitutes, no murders yet). I have 24/7 access to my trusty laptop (going on 2 years). I am a quick study but, am very easily discouraged by failure, even when minor.

I’m sorry I lack any good ideas to offer you, however you can not beat up on yourself even for
minor things. It will lead you into depression and worse. Whatever you do, whatever mistakes you make you will learn and be wiser for it. Do not allow your state of mind to get worse as it may effect you once you do get employment.

Wish you luck in job hunting.

It’s true. You can live in your car right on my curb or any curb in my city. Legally, I can do nothing. There is a tent city under an overpass not far from here too. We used to have only one or two camps now they are everywhere.

very easily discouraged by failure, even when minor.

This is going to be hard for you due to this. Never give in. Never, never, never, never give in.

You may need to consider moving to a larger city like Tampa, Jacksonville, Orlando or even the Miami area if you like extreme South Florida. There would be more jobs needing your skill set in larger cities.
