Fantastic find. I did not know the first printing was 1937. I am sure not only his faith but the events of the time played a role.

Tolkien’s books were the first fiction I read. Was hooked and read everything I could get my hands on after that.

A big part of the reason why his books endure is because Tolkien had studied Ancient Mythology and really understood it. Tolkien was heavily inspired by Norse and Celtic Mythology. He loved the idea of the Hero like Beowulf, and wanted to see it return. His works are a tribute to European culture and masterfully represent everything unique about Northern European culture (Wizards, Elves, Dwarfs, Goblins, Dragons, Giants etc.)

Tolkien’s Men were Men. I hope they do not mess with that. That will be the end of Middle Earth.
