‘GOLD MEDALS JUST FOR SURVIVING’ Twitter hashtag #RioProblems chronicles the litany of disasters and disease plaguing the Olympics

I’ve always wanted to visit Rio but never got around to it. Now, I am seriously considering crossing “visit Rio” off my bucket list. I’ll just have to get by with a travel DVD from the library or something.

Edit: I don’t know why the link to this story came up like it did. Oh well, no harm done.

The Olympics have become ridiculous. Spending tens of billions of dollars to host a sporting event that will last 16 days.

This vanity project has become such a financial burden that it will become increasingly difficult to find host cities who will make serious (meaning their national government have pockets deep enough to finance the games and pay off the judges) bids in the future.

The games have wreaked havoc on the finances of several cities and countries over the years. Which is why some cities (like Hamburg) considering bids for the 2024 games decided against doing it.

And their opening ceremonies have become nothing but propaganda-fests pushing whatever ideology the ruling class currently believes in.
(I still recall the Marxist revisionist fest called “London 2012”)

In the future the Olympics will be vanity projects for certain authoritative regimes with lots of cash.

Do not feel bad. 90% of the places I would like to visit on this planet have gone to hell.

People used to say, “We will always have Paris. For the romance it brings.”

Now, people say, “Have you seen Paris lately? Not a pleasant place to go.”

Why don’t they just pick one place, build an Olympic city and have the games there. Every year in the same place.

I was in Rio last year – it wasn’t during the World Cup, nor the Olympics, nor Carnival.

People were really cool. The city has amazing history. F~~~load of energy. (City’s larger than NYC!) Nice beaches, easily accessible from the subway. Awesome surfing. Food kicks ass. Fresh-squeezed juice everywhere. Mini-gyms built right **on*** the beach! Things were cheap. Women were downright gorgeous.

Having said that, you couldn’t pay me enough to go there right now. I’ll go back *after* the Olympics.

The IOC (International Olypics Commitee) is covered in corruption and scandals. they looked the other way when the Chinese threw thousands of people out of their homes to build an Olympic Plaza. They turned a blind eye to Putin’s government doping of Russian athletes during their Winter Olympics. I.O.C. execs extort millions of dollars of perks from local politicians. They boost their ratings by turning the women’s events into porno peep shows to attract horny manginas. They have so many events that it’s impossible to keep up with what’s going on. Give me the Football/Soccer World Cup any day which is truly the world’s most important world sporting event.

There have been proposals to make Athens, the historical home of the original Olympics, the permanent home for the games. It makes sense but the IOC will never go along with that because they can make a lot more money for their execs by peddling the games to local politicians.
To think the Olympics are about sports is to be naive. It’s all about the bucks and political power.

Yes, the Olympics have become a political propaganda tool but lets not forget that ultra-capitalist Russia in the Winter Olympics in Sochi where Putin staged the games with his capitalist state sponsored drugged athletes.
