Hey guys. So, I currently have a Dell desktop and while it is still in great condition (purchased about 3 and a half years ago), I’m trying to really go my own way and do more of what I want to do with my life, specifically emphasizing me finally working more on my writing and drawing and creating some digital comics, which I sadly can’t do so much of as I’m constantly moving around during the day and the desktop can’t come with.

Ideally, I’d also eventually get a drawing tablet of some sort and maybe some recording equipment for making music, probably also do the occasional movie-watching on it. I’m thinking of just gutting my desktop and using the hard drive (1 TB) for backing up/excess data.

Additionally, I plan on returning to school in the fall so I’ll need it for my classes. My co-worker, who is in school for some sort of network security, recommended a Lenovo. I’m kind of basic when it comes to tech; a little above your average user because I pay attention when I’m working on s~~~ but not nearly as useful as I’d like to be. I was wondering what you guys “in the know” would recommend.

My needs are absolutely minimal, so an ASUS Chromebook does it for me.

Whatever you get, make sure it has a good reputation for reliability. You do not want to experience the joys of a hard drive crash, which is what happened to my hewlett packard after about nine months. BTW, hp said my warranty had expired.

I just picked up this new ASUS at Best Buy:

    ASUS 550jx

I’ve always bought $1000+ laptops, you get what you pay for…

I don’t suggest Lenovo. First of all these laptops had spyware which decrypted all your ssl connections. The USA government doesn’t trust them, apparently there is a backdoor.

I recently got a laptop similar to what XSDBS mentioned, just the next model down. I put in 16 gigs of RAM and an SSD myself. Then moved the 1 TB spinning drive into the CD drive for about $1350.

If you just want something out of the box, it is a good option.

I’m kind of a computer snob.  So take what I have to say with a grain of salt.  Everything I do is overkill.  For a laptop I always buy Sager.  However, I usually buy a small netbook like laptop to act as a portable server.  Why?  I’m crazy.  At my apartment I have a killer desktop I built and also a pretty killer server.  I have also an APU based desktop I use as a media server.

If you just want to surf the web and watch movies, just buy any laptop with a large screen for your viewing pleasure.

I have a Sony Vaio that I’ve had for almost a year and a half.  It works perfectly, save for a loose hinge (but that’s a normal thing from the very frequent usage it gets out of me).

The laptops I buy always cost a minimum of $1000. But never over $1500. Presently I’ve had an ASUS for about 3 years and it hasn’t caused me any trouble.

I don’t play many new games anyways, so the non cutting edge hardware is just fine for my purposes.

I have an MSI GT-70 20C whatever I got for about 1400$ with a crappy 1TB hard drive and only 8GB of ram. I replaced the 1TB HDD with two msata SSD’s in raid 1, and removed the DVD drive and added in a hard drive caddy, which lets me run my 1TB 7200RPM drives in raid 1. The graphics card and CPU are socketed as well on this laptop, so If I ever felt like upgrading, I could. I could even replace the two 1TB HDD’s each with dual msata SSD’s in raid one, giving me a total of 3 hardware failure resistant drives, at 1TB each!.

So if you like tinkering, a Mid range laptop you can upgrade is great! =3

I picked up this: dell laptop inspiron 15, intel core i3 5005u, 1Tb HD, HD 5500 graphics, 4gb ram, from walmart 2 days ago for $349. the i3- 5005u is a quad core @2.0ghz (2 physical 4 threads) most in that budget price range are Pentiums. I don’t think those specs are too bad at all for that price. It’s not loaded with bloatware either. It boots up quick, it’s actually my aunts, I built her a tower awhile ago and it got hit with lighting so she calls me to build her another…I just walked into walmart and bought the laptop LOL, that’s what computers are becoming today… throwaway.

Yeah, after a lot of homework, I decided to stick with Dell because I trust them due to never having a bad experience with their equipment. Amazon’s having a tech deal for Father’s Day/Graduation so I bought an Inspiron 17R with an i7 processor. Cost me about $750 with the 2-day shipping, but I’m happy with it so far. Also bought a draw pad (not Wacom, but the brand, Ugee, is spoken of being the same in terms of quality but without the price tag that comes with the Wacom name) for $70 while equivalent pads from other companies tend to run for around $350, so I’m pretty happy right now.

I recommend when it comes to laptops is to check out the business laptops before the comsumer line up. They are usally built to last far longer then a consumer type machine and it’s easy to replace parts to a degree.

My set up as of now is: refurb for 200 that I paid for, retailed at 2008 at around 800 to 900 dollars.

    Asus m70Vn:

    1 TB HD seagate drive,

    4 GB of ddr2 ram,

    NVIDIA G96M [GeForce 9650M GT]

    Intel Core2 Duo T9400

    OS: Arch Linux with Xfce

Thinkpad T410: Paid about 400 bucks a year ago, retailed for $1000 or more, can’t remember anymore.

    Samsung 850 SSD Evo

    6 GB of ddr3 ram

    Intel graphics

    OS: Debian 8 with Xfce.

Asus, Clevo, maybe Dell and Lenovos are a good choice depending on the model, and what you are planning to do with it.

If we were talking about getting the most for your money, then a custom build desktop would be better.

Edit: I forgot that the thinkpad got a first gen i5 intel CPU.

@KingOfTheSea Thats a great deal, I’m also sticking with intel. I still have a core 2 quad core q9650 (came out in 2009) I’m not all that impressed with AMD FX series, I was about to build one until my other geek friend and I ran a benchmark on his FX 6300, he scored about 3k points higher so, I’m just going to continue to use this rig from 2009 lol . Now that would be great for a budget, but they are power hogs, and run hot. my next system is probably going to be an i5-4k. I used to be an AMD fanboy back in the day.

One more warning about laptops. Business laptops are something you won’t find in Walmart, So you might have to order one online, or buy a refurbished machine from somewhere. For dells, check out their Latitudes models, I bought a used Dell D630 Latitude model for 50 bucks used made in 2010. Replaced the HDD for space increase, and installed Manjaro for my mom in the event that her aging Windows XP Desktop dies for the 4 time, And I done fixing something that’s made to break.

Nice deal by the way. Intel chips work nicely.
