So, I have my first job interview! Seeing as I am a pretty good salesman, I am planning on starting there for now until I can go through college and get a job in law enforcement. Does anyone have any tips for the interview? Of course, I’ll dress well, be confident, and “sell myself” to my potential employer, but are there any other things you guys can think of that I should try to do (or not do) in the interview?

BTW, I will probably not hold this job for very long, as I will hopefully be moving out of state to go to college. At this point, I’m just trying to get started financially, and it would be great if I could learn some extra tricks to pull off a solid interview.

Thanks in advance for the advice!

    Peace, dudes.

    Thanks, Monk! +1.

Be honest, be to the point, don’t over do it.
Wear a suit and tie, it will show them that you are taking this job seriously.

This place isn’t very formal at all, so I’ll probably just stick to a blazer. I’m not even sure I should wear a tie (I want to appear well-dressed but not overdressed, if you know what I mean). Besides, I can’t afford a suit yet 🙁

be prepared, take an extra copy of your resume, and prepare your references in advance.

I hadn’t thought of bringing an extra copy of my resume. I’ll be sure to do that!

be clean shaven, and very very presentable, you will judged on that, don’t wear strong cologne. Don’t forget to shine your shoes and wear a watch.

Will do! I’ll probably even bust out the hair gel (I usually do without). I’ll certainly go easy on the cologne as well.

Thanks again, and if anyone has anything to add, please feel free to chime in.

    Peace, dudes.

What Monk said, and know the company’s product line. Be prepared to answer questions about it. If they don’t ask, then be sure to drop it in casually.

Tune your resume for that company and its products.

Do wear that tie, a conservative tie, even if you only wear it to the interviews. It shows respect: You took the trouble to look your best for them, and they will respond on a subliminal level.

Oh, I once rejected a candidate because his breath stank. If he can’t be troubled to brush his teeth, then what else is he going to be careless about? His work assignments?

    Stealthy, beautiful post. Thank you!

Also, thank you RoyDal, for the tip about the brand. I have some knowledge, but you’re right that I should probably do some more research before I go in to this interview.

Do you have your 30 second “So tell me about yourself speech” down yet? If not, learn it like the back of your hand. Practice it out loud if you haven’t already. Every interviewer throws this out – it’s an easy win. Especially when you customize it to the position/employer.

I also like to count off 3 bullet points of how & why i bring value to the table, over/above what other people do. You’re not just hitting their min requirements for the position, but going beyond them. (Maybe tough if it’s entry-level, but worth considering)

Also – have a few questions written down that you want to ask. The last question you ask should always be “Well i enjoyed discussing my qualifications & this position with you. Can you tell me what the timeline & next steps are?” or some such.
