Holy cow, I thought today was going really well. Great night of sleep, beautiful day. I have been taking care of some things that needed doing, while my dogs napped.
I saw the girl dog struggling to get up (she is old (13) and has bad rear hips) so I started to move towards her to help her up, but she continued scooting forward and hit the corner of the TV. I watched in slow motion as it fell and hit the coffee table with a loud crack.

I was relieved to see the glass was not broken, but when I turned it on the picture is damaged right at the spot where it hit the coffee table. Sigh…

Anyway, just needed to vent mostly.

I am looking at cheaper TV’s on Amazon and I found one, but it is a Roku tv. I don’t know much about that s~~~, and I am not interested in any more pay services, but I was wondering if you can use a TV like that just as a regular TV with cable plugged into it?

I figured who better to ask than the brothers here!

Well it depends on what quality you want, I have a 24-inch HDTV that serves its purpose pretty well, I got that from Best Buy on a sale for about a $100.

A friend of mine has a roku tv but he uses the services on it so I don’t know how well that would work.

Recently someone else just bought a 4K but that was upwards for $2000 (and he got it on sale.)

What was your old tvs size and format?

Having a girlfriend is like owning a gun, the longer your around it, the more you want to shoot it.

It was a 40 inch Toshiba HD 1080 flat screen etc.

I might go down to a 32 inch. I am still in shock. I am pretty cheap and would have liked to keep that TV for the next 20 years. F~~~.

Right now I am leaning towards this, but going to start looking at 32 inch ones.

Well if you want a 32 inch that isn’t too expensive I found this

    https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-UN32J5003-Protector-Performance-Cleaning/dp/B00YM91ACW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1492886392&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=32+inch+HDTV&psc=1

    Hope this helps.

Be careful with Samsung Smart TV’s as they have have been proven to be used as spy tools. Their microphones can be hijacked and everything in their vicinity is recorded, turned into text files, and sent to third parties for advertising purposes. Their TV’s can also be in off mode but are actually active.

Tinfoil hat off, but it’s true.

Bro. Tv’s arnt cheap and you are correct to buy something decent looking ahead long term. For that reason I would say buy a smartTv 4K. Gives you options down the line.

    Peace is > piece.

Okay, then for something that’s pretty cheap and not a smart tv I found this

    https://www.amazon.com/SCEPTRE-X325BV-F-Class-1080P-Ultra-Slim/dp/B01I557AKY/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1492885279&sr=8-6&keywords=32+inch+hdtv+1080p

If you do want to upgrade to something that you can have for the next 20 years, a 4K would be a good investment, but I’m pretty cheap myself, so I’m waiting until my tv finally goes bad before I upgrade.

Don’t go to Amazon for a purchase! Give some of these struggling stores and Best Buy some business. Damn, I’m sick of online shoppers hurting retail stores and jobs!

I don’t have a vehicle. I walk or ride a bike. Nearest place that sells TV’s is several miles away, and I am not walking that far carrying a TV.

Besides I don’t feel I owe local small business owners and loyalty. They were the ones most outspoken about not helping people during the Mortgage meltdown. Guess what f~~~ers? We were your customers.

Maybe it’s a sign. Maybe it’s time to ditch the TV altogether.

I still have a picture tube TV, but all i watch is DVD’s and wait for it……VHS !!

F~~~ paying for Cable, Satellites or WHATEVER !!

Go on Craigslist get an old Sony CRT TV for free or close to it, probably get the guy to deliver it to your house, buy your favorite old/new TV shows/series on DVD and OWN your entertainment.

Thanks for the suggestion, but once I got a flat screen that I could just pick up and tuck under my arm, I could never go back. It is like HDTV, once you see it, you can’t go back to the hazy looking old TV.
Also since my divorce I try to minimalize everything. I got rid of all my VHS, and a lot of my DVD’s. I rarely buy anything like that now. Just too much clutter to keep, gathering dust. But that is just personal choice. Glad you enjoy the stuff, truly. GYOW. (For instance I kept Band of Brothers DVD’s and Apollo 13 etc. Still enjoy them sometimes.)

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions! They helped.

I ended up downsizing a bit to a 32 Samsung, that I bought from BestBuy online, with free shipping.

I also bought a cheap wall mount (duh!) so my dog won’t be knocking it down again. Poor thing. It hurts watching her struggle with age. Not much time left I think. She truly has been the best dog in the world. So gentle and loyal. I certainly didn’t get mad at her for even a second. I just wish I had been more proactive with getting a wall mount. Oh well.

Thanks again guys! Feel free to continue add any more comments you have! I will read them all.

    LOL

I don’t think you can. It isn’t a smart TV, no wifi, microphones, camera or anything.

It is old school baby, like me! Well as Old school as an LED HD TV can be, anyways.

Fill it with gasoline, then, plug it in!

That’s what Uncle Rob would do!

May I suggest a good Samsung 40 inch non smart TV with a HIGH refresh rate. Think of TV’s as computer monitors, you can add accessories as needed via USB etc….
