Even though I have a good job to begin with I always end up putting a couple of hours into applying to jobs every few days just for the chance at getting something better. In the same way companies aren’t loyal to the employees I’m not going to be loyal to them. I’ll jump at any job that’s better than the current position I’m in now in the same way my company will fire me if they had to make “cut backs”
Just today, I got an email from an employer asking me “what’s your desired salary?” After sending me a cookie cutter message thanking me for applying to their job listing.
I responded back with this:
I’m not answering what salary I desire because it’s up to you to sale me the position. I’ll never put a fixed desired salary on myself because it doesn’t make sense.
Every interviewer and every employer knows that’s one of the most stupid questions you could ever ask a potential candidate for your job listing. I hate that f~~~ing question with a passion. It’s like the interviewer WANTS you to f~~~ up in the interview when asking that.
If they don’t want to list their salary on the job listing themselves, then f~~~ them.
It’s up to the employer to sale the job to the person being interviewed. I can go to other employers that don’t play bulls~~~ tricks like these because in my experience, the employer needs the employee way more than the employee needs the employer.
Employers who ask bulls~~~ questions like these don’t even deserve my time in an interview.

Anonymous25It’s a test of negotiation skills. respond by saying what the salary range is for a position like that (have researched it before the interview), then list your skills and experience and say for that reason I consider myself to be towards the higher end of the scale
F~~~ that. Ask them how mutch to buy the company, and if you can see their balance sheet/ A/L.
When you find yourself in the majority, it's time to reflect.
Whoever answers that question first loses.
I say I sure you will make a fair offer.

Exactly, this. Nothing else.
It is not bulls~~~ question, from employer perspective it is one of the best questions, with very limited good answers, above one rare exemption.
The choices we make, not the chances we take, determine our destiny
My answer would be “Competitive with other peers and employers within the industry.”
Feminism isn't about equality with men, it's about leverage over men.
I answer that question as a question. “You know my qualifications and experience. What do you feel is a fair salary for me?” Whatever they say, I’d take it, because it’s either that or nothing.

I’ve come across this question when I was younger and applying for hundreds and hundreds of programming jobs. Before I would’ve just gave a number, but now my response would be:
0, because I don’t need to be motivated by a salary in order to do what I love. My skill and experience will determine what I should be paid.

If you are young or broke that is one way to do things.
I got my first full time professional job from an interview where I said I basically didn’t want the job. I was working as a graduate assistant in school in the network operations center, but I went to an interview with a company a friend worked for. During the interviews I basically told them I was happy with the job I had I wasn’t even sure I wanted the job they were offering.
By the end of the day I had an offer for a job with a 60% raise over what I was making.
It’s as bad as all the job ads that do not state a salary. I resigned a job 6 months ago due to a Mangina boss berating me down the phone for a female staff member’s error and abusive emails sent to me. Anyway I applied for a job and get a call from HR who asked me in a snooty way what my salary expectations were. There was no salary range in the ad. So I said well I presume you are offering a salary range dependent on the person. She said in a snotty voice, “well yes we have a banding”. I said, “so what’s the banding.” She said in a snotty voice, “I’m not prepared to tell you that.” I put the phone down. I mean this is the s~~~ we have to put up with in the UK when looking for a job. of course thanks to project fear BS re Brexit recruitment has fallen of a cliff and I have to go through this s~~~ with HR eevrytime I apply for what crappy low paying jobs there are. Then of course there are recruitment consultants…

It may be sometimes, but usually it is really not. It is them wanting to get you for as little as possible. It’s the same with all the ads that say competitive salary, you know that means it is anything but. the of course you get the ads for sales jobs that advertise the OTE in the headline to make it look like that is the basic salary before comms. I mean do they think we are all idiots?

Every job offer that I receive comes with a “we are analysing other candidates too, tell me what’s your desired salary ?”. That’s doesn’t make sense, but is the market, they try to make you answer the lowest salary that you would accept for the job to have any chances.
As our unemployment rate grows, everyday people accept to work for less that they deserve.
This is one of the main reasons that I want to move from here. You being a certified programmer, with more 10 years of professional experience in coding and in several sub IT areas (devops, networking, infosec) and who take it seriously and keep studying, converting to dollars you salary would be around 600 usd per month, and that’s not enough to live by yourself here.
But if you are a junior, have 1 year of experience, you would be happy to work with a 400 usd salary. They don’t appreciate specialisation here, we are becoming the China of IT industry, masses of mindless workers in a commie system.
