What’s up gents. Has anyone ever been to Shannon, Ireland? After years of wanting to go, I’ve decided that this is the year. I’m working on obtaining a new passport now, and I’ll be registering for The Great Limerick Half Marathon http://www.greatlimerickrun.com/ what better way to see the country?

Any insights on the culture or anything really would be appreciated.

I’ve been to Ireland several times. May would be a good time to go, before the summer crowds arrive. Stay in B&Bs they are fun and you get to know people. Local pubs are fun as well. Driving in Ireland is not for scaredy cats. The controls are on opposite side of the car and you damn well better drive on the left side of the road, and roads are narrow, especially in the mountains. Take warm clothes. Its cool and windy there even in mid summer. You’ll be on the west coast where the scenery is the most spectacular. Drive the Ring of Beara. It starts in Kenmare in County Kerry which is south of the Shannon River. It takes all day but well worth it. If you’re a runner you may enjoy climbing Croagh Patrick, Patrick’s Mountain in County Mayo. That would be just north of Limerick. Town of Kinsale in Cork is one of my favorites. Dublin is a little London. Lots to do but expensive. Up North Donegal is my favorite County. When I first went to Ireland back in 80’s, Belfast and Derry were too dangerous, but now they fine. Don’t drink too much, especially if you have to leave a pub at night and drive.

Appreciate that! I’ll be staying close to Shannon, not interested in Dublin…. not really a city guy. I’ll definitely want to check out the cliffs as well. Some of the scenery shots i’ve seen are simply incredible.

I’ve been to Bushmills, quiet little town. If you go to Bushmills, you should visit the Whiskey Factory. They have tours

Hi Nomad82. Ive been to Ireland a number of times. How long is your holiday?

I think county Kerry, Galway city, west county Cork, Dublin city, Connemara and County Wicklow are the better places to visit. I dont think there is much in Limerick itself. I would say hire a car in Shannon and go from there.

Im into hiking so we hiked Caruntohill Mt and Brandon Mt in County Kerry which is further south from Limerick. Brandon is on the Dingle peninsula which is scenic. Dingle town was good for pubs. I dont drink anymore but I recommend Kinsale town which is near Cork for fun and pubs and restaurants and also Galway city for pubs.
In connamara got a ferry out to the aran islands which was good and cycled around the island.

Cliffs of Moher and Bunratty castle is near Limerick. In County Wicklow, Glendalough has a scenic hike around a lake which was good and Djouce Mt has a great view over Dublin bay – we actually ran that as is a gentle slope. Stayed in Greystones which was a nice town with a beach in Wicklow.

Imho Ireland (like many countries) lost a lot its culture due to globalisation and also the european banking crisis of 2008 put a financial burden on the Irish as they were forced (unjustly imo) by their government and the EU/ECB to pay for the government bailout of private banks. Consequently imo the towns have detiorated in certain ways since then and everything more expensive now. If you are not a city person though its a great for scenery and hiking (if the weather is okay ;-).

Thank you, that’s alot of information. It should be for about a week, and since the race is only for one day I will have plenty of time to check out many things. I’ll make a note of all the suggestions (literally writing them down). Again, much appreciated.

Actually the controls are in the correct place in the car, most people are right handed so it makes sense to steer with the right hand and change gears with the left hand. Also most cars will be what you US of A citizens refer to as ‘stick shift’ in that the driver has more to do.

I drive a stick/manual now Engineer so that works for me! I’m really looking forward to how awkward the opposite controls will feel… i’ve always been intrigued.

    Thank you….

No worries. I recall a good lunch in http://www.durtynellys.ie/ beside Bunratty Castle (?) on way to Cliffs of Moher and we had some nice Guinness’s in Naughtons pub in Galway. Got the Tarbert car ferry on way to Kerry from Galway.
