I am looking to buy some MRE’s for camping/ Bugout bag.

Can anybody recommend a source they have used?

What about some of the civilian alternatives?

    any advice is welcome

I just go with dried fruits, nuts, beef jerky, and Idahoan instant potatoes, they come in a flat package in many flavors. Get yourself a dehydrator, you can make jerky and dried fruits.

I haven’t tried any MRE’s, but would be interested as well to hear what is out there and what the quality of the stuff is. I am guessing it is mostly crap, but I really have no idea.

Don’t bother with MRE’s. Except for the Chile Mac entree they are also called “Meal’s Refusing to Exit”.

    Go freeze dried.

Just remembered, I have tried those years ago, I think REI used to sell them, maybe they still do. They were good, a little pricy, but good.

I have never tried an MRE, but just figured, if it is food that is sent off to war for guys that the government doesn’t really care about, they are likely s~~~e.

I was thinking the MRE is self contained. Doesn’t need extra water. Is all in one package. They seem pricey so I wouldn’t use them in bulk, just enough for 3 days.

Question for military men: Do you get 1 MRE a day or do you get 2-3 when you are deployed?

1 a day is plenty. Beware that they do stop you up. I would make your own. I do zip lock bags with Cliff Bars, Peperoni sticks, cheese itz, and peanut butter.

Speaking for myself, my pantry is overflowing with canned foods. No MREs for me.

During my backpacking phase, I did the freeze dried thing. Of course, I was assured of an ample supply of potable water.

Slightly off subject, but there’s a guy who does reviews of old military ration packs from around the world dating as far back as the 1940’s on Youtube. Some of them are still edible.

MREs aren’t as bad as everyone is making out. Having a box or two in your house/car isn’t a bad idea. For God’s sake, have cans of high fiber veggies as well. Like Turnip Greens, Spinach, and sauerkraut.

There are some items in the MRE package you need water for. You should have a stash of clean bottled water anyway.

The preservatives in the MRE’s f~~~ up the bacteria levels, necessary for proper digestion, in your gastrointestinal tract. I would stay away from them are there are plenty of healthy, and cheaper, alternatives such as canned and freeze dried food (as Roydal pointed out). Hell, even taking a crossbow pistol or “arrow slingshot” for small game or minnow traps/trout lines for fish offers nutritional benefits. You don’t always have to bring food with you to eat well.

I used to have MREs in my bob/72hr kit but have replaced them with things like snickers bars jerky peanutbutter canned soup with pull tabs, ect. These things have long self lives and for the most part can be kept in your car in your bob if you take it with you at all times. MREs needs special conditions to be stored proper to last. Tuna pouches are good too. Never had a problem, usually eat the food on bob exercises, which is just a fancy way of saying I went camping using my bob, or replace it when the dates are up. I check my bob on a regular basis. I get the idea from morning apparatus checks. That way I always know whats where, dont forget, and keep track of dates. You may want a seperate sheet attached or in a pouch or flap that tracks whats where and dates in the bob. Thats just what works for me. Hope that helps!

My brother is swearing on NRG-5 products, these bars taste like sweet wheat Cookies, not bad, but i would not want to live a month just by eating that.
For my emergency back up i rely on canned tuna/beans/stews… for taste with lots of Rice and noodles, long shelf life +5y, cheap, tasty, everywhere to get, good nutrients and u can also use it in peacefull times if u f.e. are heaving a Party to refresh the stockpile.
