This has nothing to do with self-acceptance, and everything to do with demanding to be entitled to the respect and adulation of everyone, without exception.
I found her act, her sign, and the dialogue / narration displayed through the video to be completely about taking advantage of the current social climate; a climate where fabrication and outright misrepresentation have become the new reality, while truth is to be punished. While this appears to be a relatively benign act, it in truth displays an illness which has become very deeply rooted in Western culture; the abandonment of progress, and the disintegration of any standards. Indeed, even the words “Standard” or “Normal” are to be frowned upon.
I am beginning to wonder whether or not a woman could smear herself in her own feces, and stand in public protest, while successfully garnering acceptance. Not too long ago, a woman made a point of running a marathon with her crotch blood running down her legs so that there could be “No Shame”. Yeah, some of this stuff is “natural”. We get it. But I still wipe my arse after I take a dump.
We are being told daily, through every possible popular media outlet that we must not set a bar anymore. The bar has been set so low, that it’s literally lying on the ground, for all to step over, without a second thought as to it’s purpose and significance. Those who set the bar higher slip by without notice, because this newly minted bar lies so low. A man lands a module on a comet? F~~~ that. His shirt is WRONG.
She knew full well, that were anyone to actually tell her “No, dear. Put your clothes back on. This is not beautiful”; that person would immediately be an “offender” and would more than likely be persecuted by the surrounding crowd for telling the truth. That crowd would be absolutely anxious and pleased as opportunists to shine through on camera as being “The Good Guy”, “The White Knight” or “The Social Justice Warrior”. Oh, how kind and venerable I will look on Youtube. Will I go viral? It’s an ego trip of absolutely epic proportions.
She has gone so far as to put a blindfold on, which belies something: she’s not able to even stomach the possibility or notion that someone MIGHT tell her the truth, and that which she knows to be the truth. She stands there knowing the truth, but absolutely desires for us to lie to her.
Yes, we are now living in a world where even the simplest of truths, if verbalized, are to be shamed and punished.
Her sign, as displayed, reads:
I’m standing here for anyone who has ever struggled with a self-esteem issue like me, because all bodies are valuable. To support self-acceptance, draw a ♥ on my body. It asks nothing. Not even a “Please” in there. Just a simple, “ACCEPT ME. DRAW ON MY BODY”.
The screen dialogue, flows in it’s entirety as follows:
“On August 29, 2015 at a busy public market in Downtown Boise…..Idaho, (she knows she’s fully protected. she knows she’s safe. Funny how that works. Here we live in a RAPE CULTURE, but she’s fine to blindfold herself and stand nearly naked amidst us potential rapists.
Amy Pence Brown asked for hearts. She sure didn’t ask anything. She demanded them.
And received much much more. Surprise, surprise. Some spaz with no self esteem himself gave the fat woman a hug.
Amy feared this idea would bring ridicule instead of acceptance. Bulls~~~. She’d not have done it.
But she persevered. Bless her brave heart. She stood there. Such an uphill battle, that “standing there thing”
And her worst fears never came true. Of course not.
Amy stood there for nearly an hour. Amazing, she’s right up there with Terry Fox and Rick Hansen.
In a society that profits from your self-doubt Uh, it’s profiting from you rejecting any semblance of opposition
Liking yourself is a rebellious act. You’re so courageous. Che Guevera would have been proud.
Because all bodies are valuable. For what exactly? The marriage contract? Science? What the hell, exactly, is your fat body valuable for?
It’s valuable for feminism. Well, that and cardiologists, anyway.
