Here is how they pull it off.
They get some random person that knows dick-all about their computer.

In my relative’s case she has a small business and has other peoples sensitive info stored on it.

She gets the call and it scares the s~~~ out of her.

They remote in to the machine (much like zoom can do) they pull up some log files that look really scary and important, then they say ‘yup you are infected’.

Then for a small one time fee paid via PayPal or iTunes gift card, somebody is a lille richer and someone is a little poorer.

Ya i’ve had this happen at work a half dozen times. 5 of the 6 times they’ve called IT first before doing anything but one time the person actually did call the # and let them remote control their PC. IT was p~~~ed.
