Are you still considering this?
Not just considering. I’ve designed and tailored prototypes.
My plan is to produce exclusively in the US with American workers. This will of course add at least a little to the price. Please understand guys, there’s no way to compete on the lower price end of the spectrum without using foreign (pseudo) slave labor, and I won’t do that.
The only real niche I can see here is to make clothes that look better than the $500-$1000 shirt and pants combo, but at a fraction of the price.
This is not Lee jeans and a T-shirt.
This is “wow, that guy has awesome taste in clothes.”
This is men recognizing that the whole fashion thing is absurdly idiotic, vapid, and shallow, but that the clothes you wear DO make an impression in business and professional life, and my philosophy is to give you maximum “wow” return on your investment.
That’s not Lee jeans cheap, but it’s still a lot cheaper than the crap in GQ/Maxim. And it looks better.
Note: Nothing against lee jeans – I wear them all the time casual/outdoor.
"Data, I would be delighted to offer any advice I can on understanding women. When I have some, I'll let you know." --Captain Picard,
I could be wrong, but the men who spend $500-$1000 on a shirt don’t really care how much it costs. I don’t know that a cheaper price is going to win you that demographic.
Perhaps you could win over those already pay that much for their clothes, and I have no idea how big that demographic is. I hate to say it, but to get someone like me to buy in, it’s going to have to way better then anything I’ve seen or worn before.
Ok. Then do it.
Narwal – thanks for the observation, that’s really helpful.
What about $60 – $90 for a really nice looking dress/social shirt made out of very fine or rare material?
I’m talking upscale, but without the upscale price.
"Data, I would be delighted to offer any advice I can on understanding women. When I have some, I'll let you know." --Captain Picard,
It’s possible. I would need to see it and try it on. For me personally, I’m not likely to buy clothing online because I don’t fit the typical sizes, and online returns are a pain.
And to be honest, I’m just not that interested. You would also have to convince me that I have an unrecognized need. But I never crack open a GQ/Maxim mag and wish I could dress like those guys. I don’t know that I want to.
I don’t think I’d be the guy you want to try and sell to.
Ok. Then do it.
Lol my designs aren’t quite THAT far out. You could wear them to the office for example, but you’re guaranteed to get asked where you got them.
I have a barrel chest and average arm length so I wear 3xs with over long sleeves. I started cutting the cuffs off my nice dress shirts flipping them back and reattaching them as rolled up sleeve. I get compliments where ever I go. They have a turnback cuff look you would see on a tailored James bond shirt except they’re sewed in place and don’t move. Next I plan to have them embroidered with a Kung-fu dragon on one side and tiger on the other.
If you rescue a damsel in distress, all you will get is a distressed damsel.

I have a similar but different problem. I wear 2Xs, but the sleeves are still not long enough typically. So I roll up the sleeves so that it is not bluntly obvious that the sleeves are too short.
This is not as big of an issue as it used to be and I can find properly fitted shirts, but I’ve grown accustomed to rolled up sleeves and it feels wrong any other way. Besides that there will always be an issue because the difference between the length of my arms straight out vs fully bent at the elbow is a good 6 inches. It’s simply the physics of having longer appendages.
But I digress.
Ok. Then do it.
Narwhal – it’s not for everybody and never will be due to individual tastes.
I’m just stating the business philosophy. I’m frankly honored that you guys would even consider it. I just look around here in Seattle and see the Diesel store selling ripped up faded jeans and a mac shirt for $1500 and know damn well I can do better. Think Judd Nelson in the breakfast club:
And then picture paying $1500 to look like that. I s~~~ you not – it’s damn near EXACTLY the same look. They’re still in business so SOMEBODY has to be buying that crap for that much.
It’s an extreme example, but the bottom line is I can and have done MUCH better for way less money.
Think THIS guy at the end of the video:
[Watch the whole thing if you haven’t – great red pill]
Now the shirt he’s wearing doesn’t much resemble my work, but it illustrates the point. Would you rather have that guy’s look, or Judd Nelson’s? I’m catering to the former. If you prefer the latter, I respect that, but would offer the friendly suggestion of heading to you local thrift store and saving about $1475.00 over the cost of the same outfit at Diesel.

Neither. I suppose I dress more like Nelson (without the hair), but don’t pay like that. I’ve never walked into a Diesel store in my life. I don’t really care for that ‘metrosexual’ look from the video.
This is perhaps getting weird, but this is typical of what I wear to work.
Shoes – steel-toed hiking boots I got about 10 years ago for around $100.
Pants – jeans, around $40 from the levi’s outlet store. (If I have to go to the corporate office, then dress pants for around the same price)
shirt – Joseph A Bank – $50. I splurged for this, as they fit well (loose) and last a long time without fading or wearing.Keep in mind, I’m 44 years old.
Ok. Then do it.

Not sure when a well fitted button-up shirt became “metrosexual,” but I think I get your meaning. Like I said – niche market. I’m going for more upscale than Levis, but not so far upscale that it’s unaffordable or absurdly priced.
