Like most men, I enjoy alcohol. Im old enough, and have a high enough tolerance, that I dont have crazy issues ensued by a night of heavy drinking that I regret. I dont get “drunk” easily, and its more of an endurance sport I enjoy at home anyway- I enjoy the process of acquiring a buzz.
What I dont enjoy is sometimes I experience a major down side the next day. Some mornings I wake up happy, or even keeled; but sometimes I wake up feeling like a shadow of myself. I dont even want to look others in the eye. I have the worst/most negative thoughts in my head which are all extremely critical/negative of myself.
Some of my closest friends have told me the same with their bad hang overs; and under normal circumstances some of them are complete extroverts. Yet they dont even want to make eye contact with co-workers the next day. In Australia they call this “the fear”. Im not in Australia but Ive looked this up online before.
Im curious if any of you have experienced this. When it occurs to me, it really has a negative self impact, in an exponential sense.

I remember a while back you created a thread about potential interactions with protein diet/supplements and medications you are taking. Any new addition to HCTZ and Lisinopril? Or increase in dosages? Sometimes as simple as dehydration can cause mood symptoms.

Hey man, thanks for the quick reply. If Im going to be honest with myself, the high blood pressure is more than likely a consequence of drinking. Ive also never had a problem with weight gain unless alcohol is involved. I have a high metabolism and Im good with a steak or meat…Not into fatty doughnuts, deserts or other “comfort foods”. Food is never a culprit.
Im curious as to how dehydration effects mood? But I would still assume a depressant like alcohol would more than likely be a culprit.

No hard data/evidence or meta-studies I came across, but small sample studies show mood effects even in mild levels of dehydration. Our brains are ~ 75% water.
Although alcohol is a CNS depressant, the low mood the following day isn’t due to the alcohol effects on your system. It has been ‘digested’ by liver enzymes and converted to its by-products, recycled in to useable molecules.
I mentioned your medications because their primary effect is on your kidneys to filter out more water than they would otherwise. A little too much diuresis (peeing) can result in dehydration. Alcohol in itself is a dehydrant and provided you take your meds before/after drinking, you may (just may) be waking up dehydrated.
To eliminate the “don’t look in the eye” mornings – you gotta leave some booze for the morning and drink it as soon as you wake up with good food – three shots or beers do the trick. A beer during lunch – and back to work. Have some gum handy and thank me later
To avoid hangover headaches you shouldn’t consume any sugar when drinking (yes, including lemonades/coke/red bull – any mixers with sugar or sweet wines/ciders. Many kinds of beer also contain sugars in one form or another. Remember that sugar + alcohol = headache. Margaritas are the worst for me personally
Dehydration is a given when drinking. Always make sure to drink couple of big glasses of water before passing out. Same with your first waking. And the second. This works magic. Sometimes you wake up waay to early and can’t fall asleep, but you gulp some water down and lay down – and you can almost feel how all that water gets absorbed where needed and you fall asleep like a baby

It is all biochemistry. Some research will turn up how the liver breaks down alcohol, how the kidneys dispose of the liver’s waste products, what nutrients are consumed while doing this.
When you know what nutrients are flushed out of your system by alcohol, then you can stock up on them in advance.
Lowering your overall dose sounds like a good idea. Endurance sport? Try a mile walk as opposed to running a marathon.

forget drinking. I used to drink a bit when I was younger, now I have maybe 1 – 3 max of a night, and then maybe once a week if that. Gives me hell jitters at night. Weird I know. If I drink and then try to sleep within an hour or two I’ll just end up lying there brain going on the red line, heart pounding like I’ve had 3 redbulls. fkn odd. Anyone else get this or just me?
Never fuck a crazy chick.

Anonymous11I use the Russky method of hydration and avoiding sugar. A teacher in high school told us about how sugary drinks inducing hangovers. Ten years later, I finally determined he was not bulls~~~ting. I am extremely hangover sensitive too.
Another trick I use is to only drink the more expensive grades of alcohol. There are a group of alcohols called Fusel oils that are present in low concentrations after the fermentation process. They are toxic. Better distillers be it through yeast strains or distillation techniques minimize Fusel oil content.
Higher grade whiskey is best taken neat or on the rocks. I’m a whiskey and rum drinker primarily though vodka is in my arsenal too.
As far as beer goes, it’s not my intoxication beverage of choice. I have found some brands to be less hangover prone than others. I don’t like drinking a lot of beer due to the carb load within them plus they seem to dehydrate me worse.
It’s primarily a hydration and body chemistry issue. For most of us, avoiding sugary drinks and drinking water before going to sleep will do the trick. A vitamin E capsule helps too as does pacing.
Others are going to be more sensitive. Other than limiting the amount you drink, you won’t be able to do much.
Do not date. Do not impregnate. Do not co-habitate. Above all, do not marry. Reclaim and never again surrender your personal sovereignty.
I’ve been drinking a little more than usual lately. A couple of beers on a weeknight and a shot of whiskey or four on Sat night. I used to get a hangover a few months ago when I began but not lately.
Had to give up on the beers due to being on a diet and don’t like driving if I’ve even had one drink.
But I have built up a little resistance. At thanksgiving I wasn’t driving so I tied one on. It was great fun.
Alcohol can be a dangerous thing but the vast majority who has a drink every once in a while are having a good time and that’s a good thing.
I eat something after I drink and I find it helps with hangovers (something I don’t get any more).
#icethemout; Remember Thomas Ball. He died for your children.
One more thing – not sure if this is true or where I got if from
there is a normal level of alcohol in cells which is needed for normal cellular functioning
when you body goes into alcohol poisoning – it starts purging all alcohol out to protect itself.
the main cause of hangover symptoms – is lack of cellular alcohol. this is why alcohol heals hangover symptoms – because you replenish your normal cellular alcohol. It is also why alcohol is addictive.
so alcohol actually cures hangovers. you obviously don’t want to overdo it))
fermented food (like cabbage) also does wonders, or salty electrolytesproud carrier of the 'why?' chromosome

When you wake up, have half a beer or half a shot of favourite spirit.

Exactly.
