So, once I’m out of my financial debts for good (hopefully later this year), I’m going to start saving for one of my dream vehicles…at least the ones in the affordable range.
I’ve been looking “for fun” for a while now to get an idea of how much they would cost, and I used to post them to Facebook.
I posted a 2003 Ford Excursion (my dream truck ever since I had one unfortunately taken from me last year by the stupid dealership that actually didn’t have the rights to sell it after all). I love SUVs.
Mother comments on it: “That’s too big and impractical. You don’t need that. It’s a gas-eater!”
…I’m aware of this. I managed my finances just fine when I had one. My car now barely gets better gas than the truck did.
I posted a 2004 Ford Thunderbird that was only $8,000. Looked sleek, and I almost wanted to test drive it just because.
My father commented on it: “Only $8,000?? Are you going to get it!?”
My mother followed with her own comment (they’re divorced): “Nooo! You don’t need that car! It’s impractical and too small. It’s too expensive, too!”Bonus note: My dad’s follow-up comment to my mother’s was “yeah, it’s too small for someone with a family.” I dunno, I had a good laugh out of that.
I’m sure you guys on here have had women of their lives try to dictate what they can and can’t drive (or buy otherwise). I was told a $30 ticket to a concert of a band I’ve listened to for 9 years was impractical, despite the fact that I got a GOOD concert AND a VIP ticket out of it to meet them and everything.
“You could have taken your cats [that technically aren’t mine] to the vet with that money. That was pretty selfish, no offense.”
I admit it’s a little hard not to blow up on them for calling me “selfish” and my ideas “impractical” just because it’s different from their’s. It’s not swaying me in any way, I have my own likings, and I don’t dictate any other woman’s. Maybe I should, though!
“Umm, you don’t need those $30 candles. They’re impractical.”
“I don’t think you should buy those $80 jeans. They won’t fit for long and they’ll only wear out soon anyway.”
“You spent HOW much to go eat out with your girl-friends?!”
“That make-up from Sephora was over $200. That could have supplied a few weeks’ worth of food…”
Cars are a common debate. Personally, I don’t have a dream car, I just need something to get me to and from work/a store. My mother, on the other hand – who had 3 more kids 12 years after me – decided she needed to spend $13,000 on a car that was “the right color”.
She has never been able to save money.
