University of Michigan creates “safe space” to protect students from being scared or offended during debate on whether feminism has a free speech problem.

A student center for gay, bisexual, and transgender students at the University of Michigan created a safe space Tuesday to protect students frightened by an approaching debate on the subject “Does Feminism Have a Free Speech Problem?”

“We recognize that the rhetoric of the speakers featured in this event is incredibly harmful to many members of our campus community,” says the announcement by Michigan’s Spectrum Student Center. “The Spectrum Center will be providing a supportive alternative space this evening and holding extended staffed hours until 9pm. [Emphasis theirs] There will be no program; our intent is to offer a relaxing, positive space for students who want to gather in community.”

This event garnered much attention from the press in Michigan. I attended this event and found it highly entertaining, funny and informative.

Protests and screaming/heckling from women and some guys was abundant as expected. This perplexed me since Universities are nothing if not a fertile platform for opposing ideas.

Proceeding from the assumption that we are all equal and strong independent humans, why do we need to create a “safe space” for people who find conflicting views objectionable? Where’s my safe space? It’s more psycho-babble with no place in a well informed student body.

Look, if they really want to be ‘safe’ in all these safe spaces, we shouldn’t really bother about them. Let them get eaten up like the mouse in the video. Why should we care?

Its not our loss, its their loss that they don’t want to face the truth.

I vote to leave them be. At least they wil serve as fodder for women to feed on …. and more time until they finish ‘devouring’ them and turn towards us. I call for peace. I believe in equality, a.k.a. not caring.

I’ve never participated in any sort of protest, but I have had to walk through some before. Without even knowing what the protest was about, I found myself getting emotional and angry. I didn’t feel like I had full control over my ‘critical thinking skills’. No doubt that the protesters were feeling the same effects. I understand the need for assembly, but everyone involved in a group setting like that needs to be aware that you’ve put yourself in a moronic state and should treated as such. I believe this is also known as the ‘mob mentality’.

Second thought, universities, and high schools really, need to start having mandatory courses on logic and debate. It is sourly lacking in society. We are constantly told lies, and engage in telling lies, because we cannot tell a like from the truth. Topics would be identifying straw men, interpreting statics and what facts can be drawn from them, correlation and causation, basic logic, the fallacy of extrapolating isolated incidents to the general population, understanding and respecting perspective/POV where appropriate, identifying trolls, cost/benefit analysis, risk management, social engineering through media, actual definitions of words like ‘equality’ and ‘fair’, etc. Basically, learning how to find the truth out of all the BS. The course could easily use current issues to illustrate the subject matter without favoring one side of the issue.

Ok. Then do it.

I always presume the person touting the statistics is using those studies that confirm their already sincerely held beliefs. I am always skeptical and since information is now easily and readily available thanks to the internet. I search for an unbiased answer from an uninterested party.

By example, the dreaded “wage gap” is a perfect example. There is no “wage” gap, its an earnings gap and is easily explained and understood that it is the result of different career choices, not different pay scales in the same career. This information is available on the web from the United States Department of Labor.

However, when idiots like Hillary Clinton and even the President bitch about the wage gap it furthers the fiction. Its bulls~~~.

@keith, that’s exactly the current issue I was speaking of. And regardless of what side of the issue you fall on, proper understanding can only help you get what you want. If I’m a feminist, I need to understand that whining and additional legislation will do nothing to raise women’s salaries. I should be focus on better career choices and negotiation skills. And if I’m really honest, I should recognize that pushing ‘better career choices’ is not going to lead women to happier lives since tougher jobs have negative side effects.

Ok. Then do it.

This is very true indeed. As I explained in a previous post some time ago, we have a warehousing and distribution department. The employees in that area were previously assigned in pairs of 1 man and 1 woman, however this is no longer the case. They are now assigned in same sex pairs. After I reviewed hours and hours and hours of video of the warehousing operation, I realized the guys did all the heavy lifting and the women operated the fork lifts, hoists and hydraulic platforms. The employees are paid identical wages but the contribution by the males was far greater.

Women want equality, but only if its not too hard. As a result of the gender pairing now, we only have 2 women that still work in warehousing and distribution because within a month learned that women just couldn’t do the job and in a misguided effort to give “equality” we short changed the guys. I put a stop to that bulls~~~.
