Alright Gents, some pretty “Cool S~~~” if you are down with this sort of science.

“It’s official. Mars is now brighter than any star in the sky. This week, the Red Planet surpassed Sirius in apparent luminosity. If you wake up before dawn, you can’t help noticing Mars burning through the morning twilight with a distinctive orange glow. This recent picture from Alan Dyer of Gleichen, Alberta, shows what to expect:

Ah, yes, and it is JUST NOW beginning!….

“What’s happening? Earth and Mars are converging for a close encounter–the best one in 15 years. On July 27th, Mars will be at opposition. Oppositions of Mars happen roughly every 2 years, but this one is special. It is a “perihelic opposition.” Mars will be near perihelion, its closest approach to the sun. Perihelic oppositions also bring Mars extra-close to Earth.

The last time this happened was on Aug. 27, 2003, when Mars famously made its closest approach to Earth in almost 60,000 years. Around the world, people organized “Mars parties” to celebrate the extraordinary size and brightness of the Red Planet. This July will be almost as good with Mars only a few percent farther away than it was during its historic encounter 15 years ago. Between now and then, Mars will triple in brightness, outshining even the giant planet Jupiter. Stay tuned for that!”

If you are up at sunrise, do witness this rare experience for me 🙂

Cool stuff.. I had noticed how bright and reddish Mars was when I did an overnight shift a couple of days ago… it was indeed very obvious.

Thanks for the heads up General K. I will look for it. I love astronomy.

I drove out by Alliance, Nebraska last year to see the total solar eclipse. It was amazing. Looked like God’s eyeball.

From bi planes to the stars . (Lol “bi”planes)

Landwhales are been trained in zero gravity . They will stick better to the mars surface in low grav enviroments .

In training to the space oddeysey 2001 song .

    I like that music

The day started out cloudy, where I had planned on going. I was worried that I wouldn’t get to see anything. So I decided I’m going all in and just started driving west along the path of totality. Luckily the sky opened up around Alliance, NE and I was plenty early yet.

I stopped near the Agate Fossil Beds National Monument along a gravel road. There were people parked everywhere on every road. I was about an hour early. I set up my lawn chair and enjoyed the sun. It turned into a hot afternoon, and not a cloud in the sky. After a little bit I put my eclipse glasses on and sure enough there was a black sliver covering the edge of the sun.

After watching the black covering more and more of the sun, I noticed it getting a little bit cooler. Then when the last little bit of the sun’s light went black, I took my eclipse glasses off. All I could see of the sun was the corona shooting out of a pitch black sphere. It was dark and cold all around me. It was a very eerie experience. It only lasted about 2 minutes. As soon as the very edge of the sun started to show, it became to bright to look at again without the eclipse glasses.

I learned that the moon is just the right size and distance from the Earth to cause a perfect eclipse. Is it just a coincidence or is there an intelligent creator responsible for our perfect solar eclipses? I’m not a religious man but this sure makes me think about it.

Hey Blood Axe, I was in Hemingford, NE for the eclipse!

I wanted to go to Agate park, but some in our group were concerned about the safety of the women for some stupid reason and they also didn’t want to use a gravel road.

We also went to Carhenge afterward to see the cars and get souvenirs.

I too, am very curious about the amazing coincidence of the Sun and Moon taking up almost exactly the same amount of space in the sky.
It’s also very strange that a planet of Earth’s size, in the inner Solar System having a moon so large and also so far away.
Our moon has a big impact on our planet.

Yeah, that is pretty weird. I kind of hate that in a way because people really blow it out of proportion.

I work overnights. I’ll be on the lookout now, thanks for the heads up.

I failed to realize in my youth that I was the prize. I was going to work. I was going to earn. Little did I realize that due to feminism, that no longer meant I had to share. Road soon, Desert after.
