Then, his opponents rigged the game to where he would not be a factor, his orders would not be relayed and he was leader of the opposition in name only, without telling him.

The Navy is over tech driven. As shown an old school battle wagon general could beat them with even undisciplined forces like one would find in Iran. Can not expect a NK or Iran to be tech monsters like the US.
Should be taken as a warning shot, but I suspect the brass in no way will. Reliance on computers is much easier.

Yeah this is an achievement to be proud of and one the strategists must be secretly paying a lot of attention to, even if publically they are saying that it was an artefact of the game.

The thing about living in a technological envelope where you have dominance is that you are going to be vulnerable to someone who decides to go outside the envelope. Use standard modern communications and you are f~~~ed against the US military. Use old and irregular methods and the system simply can’t hack you.

Today the west relies on superior technology that degrades and grinds the enemy down till in the end some steroid eaters in big armour dripping with kit (that our enemies fairly call donkeys) can get out of their transport and go in and clean up the mess. You need to avoid the machine, strike before it locks on and degrades you and then evolve and change.

One day the west will fall to irregular forces just as Rome did.

The Van Riper/Millenium Challenge story has been misreported, misconstrued, and misrepresented for nearly two decades now. It was less of a war game and more of a test & training exercise.

At the highest levels, new C3I systems were being tested. Because those tests required a lot of assets from all branches to be “in theater” together, the exercise presented a rare opportunity for training too. That meant a great many “smaller” training opportunities and similar exercises were piggybacked on the original C3I tests.

For whatever reason, Van Riper didn’t get or didn’t want to get the memo. He decided fighting the war game trumped all the other planned activities and interfered in various way with training activities that had nothing to do with the war game being conducted. He played also just as fast and loose as he later accused the top brass of doing. For example, he launched cruise missiles from platforms which didn’t have that capability. His complaints that the carriers were “refloated” after he “sank” them ignored the fact that those carriers had training missions they also were scheduled to perform.

About the best way I can describe what happened is to ask you to picture a track & field competition. There are all sorts of athletic events scheduled to go on but the people involved in javelin throwing decide their event is the only one that matters. They start throwing javelins all over the place disrupting the 100m dash, the hurdles, pole vaulting, and so forth. Then, when they’re told to stop because they’re disrupting dozens of other planned events, their excuse is that they won the javelin contest. What they failed to understand – or didn’t want to understand – is that javelin throwing is only a small part of the track & field meet.

Reminds me of the days when I went into my first Naval Reserve unit. They trained Naval officers on the NAVTAG system. (Naval Tactical Game). Not real graphics intensive like a video game, more of a simulation.

They knew I knew computers, so they had the CPO that ran the system and trained officers introduce me to the system and he set up a simulation to show me how it works. He gave himself 2 Soviet Kirov-class battlecruisers and 2 destroyers and gave me 2 American destroyers.

After a while, I picked up something on the edge of radar to the NW, and sent one ship immediately to the NE and the other immediately SW. I waited until his ships were at the intersection of my two destroyer’s missile ranges (he steamed his task force straight to where my ships had been, since he knew where I was from the start) and I fired.

Then I heard a G-D-, F-S- etc from across the room. Bye-bye Kirov-class ships. I queued up another missile strike, but then he said it was almost time for lunch (in 30 minutes, LOL) and ended the simulation.

If I had it to do all over again, I would have taken my new commanding officer’s recommendation and support to go to Reserve OCS school for 2-years. It turns out my life between 1991 and 2001 was kind of a waste, anyway. I was a damned fool… I could have put 20 in and never gotten married to either of my ex’s.
