A rich man stupidly married a woman 2010. In 2013, they had a baby girl. Two years later, the man finds out that his wife has found a “Chad”. The man sues “Chad” in court for ruining his marriage. The judge sided with the married man and ordered “Chad” to pay the man $8.8 million!

Yeah, North Carolina is one of the few states that still allows suing for civil damages for criminal conversation and alienation of affection (might be the only one where it happens in practice). I believe the reason “Chad” and not the ex-wife is the subject of the suit is because the state considers his actions to have enticed the wife and thereby destroyed their marriage, so he’s one one who is civilly liable.

In the state where I live, adultery is still a crime — not just grounds for divorce. However, criminal prosecutions for such never happen. And, criminal conversation / alienation of affection are not recognized as a basis for civil suits.
