Thank you, Jan. A very interesting take. I agree that Iluvatar is the one who sent Gandalf back. Traditionally, the eagle has been associated with Zeus/Jupiter, the king of the gods in western mythology, so I believe Gwaihir acts in a sense as an agent of Iluvatar when he rescues Gandalf from Moria.

I have one other note. The video neglected to mention that Saruman explicitly rejected his role as the white wizard when he chose to become Saruman of Many Colors (a detail left out in the movies, if I recall correctly). Symbolically, Saruman was demonstrating that he wished to cast off the role of guardian and protector that had been assigned to him by the Valar and to use his tremendous power for domination, thereby exchanging his white purity for vices of many colors. Therefore, Gandalf was sent back to be a replacement for Saruman, so even though Saruman was more powerful than Gandalf the Grey (keeping him prisoner at Isengard in The Fellowship of the Ring), Gandalf acquires the power that Saruman lost when he betrayed his role, and thus has the power to break Saruman’s staff and expel him from the order.

I love that you posted this, because I’ve just started getting back into my favorite book/movie series of all time. I just got done downloading the “complete recordings” soundtracks as well, absolutely wonderful.
