    First Impression is…………….

    NO! Don’t but this one.

    Too high mileage.
    Stuff already starting to fail.
    Too many electronics to fail.
    Any service history?
Jap cars are great in general…………..
    But…………..
YOU GOTTA CHANGE THE OIL REGULARLY!
If they can’t prove the oils been changed back away.

Get an Accord or Camry instead.

Fecking hell eh. It looks like they did some service as they described in this ad, and I asked them about the engine and breaks. They said no problems…but never know.

So just the high mileage tells you to stay away?

As it goes in the world of autos.

    japan, #1. Lexus/Toyota
    Acura/Honda
Mazda is considered the cheap Japanese version of Chevrolet. Not that they’re bad cars, it’s just their standing.

    German #1. Mercedes Benz
    BMW
    Audi/VW

    United States #1. Junkyard.
    Big three S~~~boxes!

The resale value on my Toyota purchases have always been the highest! I Always sold them still running good and a history of impeccable reliability! With proper maintenance they last decades!

My 20 year old Toyota just passed inspection the other day! And it still looks reasonably well for its mileage! 175,000 and no major engine work and still runs powerful and smooth!

American engines would have driven the valves through their seats with connecting rods rapping and main bearings knocking!!!

They want nearly $4,000 for a car with over 200,000 mileage.

    Wow.

    Yeah don’t buy that.

What Toyota make would you suggest, color and year? Should I save up a bit more than 3K for the car, or buy on a lower end of budget?

I’m not a mech so can’t offer any advice.
But a rule of thumb I was taught was that any car that starts and runs is worth at least $500 (adjust for Canada).

Offer them a thousand bucks (adjust) and see what they say.
I’m guessing they aren’t getting any offers of 4K.

For the money and durability a 4 runner is the best your money can buy, they have a full frame and 4 wheel drive, they can’t be destroyed easily like a conventional unibody!

The pickup is the same vehicle underneath but more expensive for practicability, their vans are a motherf~~~er to work on and should be avoided for that reason alone!

For the unibodies that shouldn’t be taken off road or accidentally roll over a curb the Camery is the best overall buy for the minimum amount invested!

I’m now saving for a newer Taco from a private seller with allot of body damage but with all the bells and whistles! I’m addicted to the TRD offroad model with V-6 and locking differential!

Winter in a 4×4 full frame vehicle with steel wheels and studded snow tires is a NO BRAINIER!

I say steel wheels in winter because aluminum will shatter on any impact with a hard surface! Steel will bend a little and not blow out the tires from the ditch you slid in and DROVE OUT! .

A lot of cars now days have engine covers that will hide oil leaks around the head gasket, and leaks around the intake. The engine covers are easily removed, so make sure to look for any obvious oil leaks near the top of the engine and underneath the car.

Also make sure to take a test drive. Before starting it look in the radiator, is there any sign of oil mixed in or floating on the coolant? If it’s an automatic transmission, start and stop a few times, checking for clunks or slipping from trans. Get up to highway speed to make sure there are no clunks or slipping when it is shifting. It’s a good idea to test the trans going up a hill as well.

When the car gets warmed up, try and smell for burnt oil or coolant. Check the power windows and locks. Is there any obvious noise or friction from the front wheel hub assembly (wheel bearings)? How are the headlights? Has the car hit a deer or been in an accident? Any knocking from engine? When’s the last time breakpads were changed?

Used car salesmen have no problem f~~~ing you over. Ask lots of questions and inspect as much as possible.

    I hate car shopping.
    Good luck.

If it has 200K on it and its still running buy it, Any serious issue would have shown up by now. My Nissan has 330,000 on it and still runs like a top. Of course I pull regular maintenance.

Yea! Listen to Kowalski! He knows how to drive! No, but seriously, I shift smooth, accelerate smooth, and never brake hard, it’s a machine and I try to stress it as little as possible! There’s no reason to floor it unless you’re hauling a load up steep grade and don’t want to loose speed and have to downshift. The 4 cylinder is way cheaper but for hauling a load it’s a snail!

you guys need to use the adverb conversion table for going from km to miles.

    10K = 6.2 miles
    200,000 Km = 125,000 miles.
    223,000 km = 138500 miles

also check the adverb declension rules for CD to USD.

    4000 C = $3000 usd.

Canadians use the same time units, a year there is a year here.

    9 year old car
    138,000 miles
    $3000

look at cars.com for comparable cars and pricing
have a mechanic look at the car
service records are vital. replace a lot of stuff, fine, prove to me the work was done. This many miles and this age expect some parts have been replaced.

    check for accident damage
pull up carpet to look for rust or mold
look at paint…same color all over?
look at the people and the house? neat tidy people? probably took care of the car.
finger up the tailpipe…grey? coolant leak, no no no oily black? head gasket no no no, rusty? nope flood damage not a lot of dirt? probably ok.
does everything work? strange noises? find other of the same car to compare.
    belts, worn?
squeeze the coolant hoses, spongy? needs replacing.
tires worn? figure out how many miles those tires are good for. This should be the middle of the third set
look at the oil filler cap, does it smell burned? nope.white or brown pudding inside the cap or inside the engine looking into where you pour oil in? nope.

    drips on the ground, nope.

lights work? ac works, heater work? seats move properly?

how are the roads in that area? rough? good?

To me, this is an average car, average miles, looks good in pictures, air freshener keeps me from buying it, I am allergic to stuff like that. why does a car need an air freshener? mold? stinky dogs? human vomit or s~~~? cigarette? cat p~~~? these people are addicted to Vanilla Breeze?

I would take it to a mechanic. if it is good, then take it to a detail shop and they will clean it out. I think the car is good. offer half of what they are asking, stop at 2700 Canadian

Disclaimer: I used to work at a car dealership evaluating cars for trade ins.

The Mazda 6 is known to have qaulity issues. They shared too many platform parts from the Ford Taurus, so…

With those miles and model, it is worth $1,500 at best. And only then unless you enjoy working on your car every weekend.

We yanks assume everything “car” is “miles” : MPG, MPH, total miles, etc. [And $US]

This is a good price IF the car is sound. You will get lots of advice on “how to buy a car.”

    My 2 cents:
Always check carfax or an equivalent…but understand, it shows ONLY damage that was REPORTED to the insurance network. But, if it does show significant issues, walk.

Always check truecar or an equivalent for what the going average is in various areas on similar cars.

Always check Google for “timing belt or timing chain.” Most are chain, but a few otherwise good companies stuck with belts. Honda loves the belt. Toyota did for several models for several years. Remember, one engine type in a certain year/make/model may be “belt” while a different engine in the same year/make/model may be “chain.” Any “belt” car with more than like 80K (or multiples thereof) should have a record that the timing belt was changed. Otherwise, bank on BIG lettuce to have that done. Ever wonder why some cars become amazingly cheap at that mileage point? Folks want to unload them before some expensive 80K miles service is due.

Aside from the timing belt/chain issue…check the internet for advice on engine options in general. There may be advice like “the 2.3L engine is garbage but the 2.8L engine is music.”

Automatic transmissions are a flip of the coin. Some seem bulletproof, and last forever. Others fail after 100k miles, and bank on more BIG lettuce to repair that. A manual transmission, especially with a replacement clutch already done, is usually bulletproof, regardless of year/make/model.

See what years the “generation” changed. Wikipedia can help here. Most folks will advise that you should stay away from the first year of a new generation.

Take caution on buying used “premium” cars from a company (like MB, BMW, but also Lexus vs. Toyota, Acura vs. Honda, Infiniti vs. Nissan, etc.). These are usually great cars…but don’t forget they usually come with high $ parts, high $ repairs, high $ insurance, and require high $ premium fuel. These factors contribute to the “deal” you will see on these cars, and any make from Europe.

    NO! Don’t but this one.

    Too high mileage.

Kilometerage, but yeah, it is a bit up there for four thousand loonies. I would have expected it to be a thousand less. then again, that cash for clunkers fiasco is still f~~~ing the used car market down here, so it might be f~~~ed up in canada too.

Also, around 140k miles is about when serious engine maintenance starts, especially if the previous owner wasn’t keeping up with the maintenance schedule. I don’t know if carfax is a thing in canada, or even if I really trust it, but it’s better than nothing and should at least tell you if the vehicle was ever a salvage etc.

    They said no problems…

A dealer telling you there are no problems with a car is like a woman telling you she’s on the pill.
