What’s the point of restricting us to a maximum of 48 hours being logged in, then forcing us to log in once that time has expired? I often find myself getting booted at the most random times, and always when I’m typing a reply, hit send, then discover I suddenly wasn’t logged in anymore.
Can’t we just stay logged in as long as we want and decide for ourselves when we want to log out?

Yeah. It’s pretty annoying. I think it’s less work for the administrators [don’t ask me how or why] to do things this way. If it relieves the burden on those who make this site available, then so be it.

Thanks and great question.
We posted a notice announcement that everyone had to see and read (and click X to close or it will keep nagging them)…. which states a “session” is set to 48 hours long. So you NEED to log out and login at least once in that time. If you don’t, you’ll be force-logged out at 48 hours.
Let me explain…..
At most bank websites, your session is about 10-20 minutes if you do nothing. If you’re online banking and you walk away from your desk, you will be forced to log in again. This is a GOOD thing. Yeah it’s annoying, but it’s ONLY a good thing for reasons you can imagine.
48 hours is massive and very lenient.
24 hours (once a day) is pretty normal and expected.
No session expiry is kind of stupid. We can’t have THOUSANDS of members logged in indefinitely. What we REALLY can’t have is someone logged in at work, where a coworker (or girlfriend/wife????) can have access to your profile.
You follow? So 48 hours is not even restrictive.
To protect you, it should be 24 hours or even less. But we think 48 hours is pretty good for exactly the reasons you describe. We don’t want to boot you when you’re in the middle of posting.
So….. log out and in once per day and you’re covered. 48 is a relaxed buffer so it doesn’t feel like we’re being jerks about it. That’s all.
There MUST be a session expiry set.
It’s just sensible for many reasons.USUALLY –>> if you quit your browser, you can expect your session is dead and you would have to log in every time you launch it again. But we are not even doing that.
PS. Allow me to apologize if you were booted while posting. It happened to me too and I lost 15 minutes and a whole awesome post. So I have to MAKE SURE I log out and in at least once in a 48 hour period. It’s just “proper”.
If you keep doing what you've always done... you're gonna keep getting what you always got.I log in and out many times in a single day. Does this cause any problems for the site? Is it okay or does it annoy admins?
@keymaster,
Below to the userid/password input(s), there is one checkbox, “Keep me signed in”.
If there is a timeout for this site, after which the user has to login again, is that checkbox really needed?
If so, how? Some people call it fate. I call it, "Chaos Theory" - Sam Fisher

Not at all. Don’t even notice. There is no negative implication whatsoever. The only “rule” currently is “must log in and out within a 48 hour period, or you will be forced to login again after 48 hours”.
How many times is totally irrelevant.

Yes that’s a client side (your browser) “remember me”.
A server session is server-side (the website).Client and server scripting are different.
Example:
A server script gets “the time” from the server.
(website timezone – doesn’t vary)A client script gets “the time” from your computer.
(your local time – varies for everyone)Sever sessions(us) are different from client(your) sessions (cookies)
—If this is still annoying to you guys, we can bump it up to a week. Don’t hesitate to request that. We just think 48 hours is pretty relaxed already. What are you otherwise used to?
If you keep doing what you've always done... you're gonna keep getting what you always got.I see KM’s point. Seriously fellas is it that big of a deal ?
Peace is > piece.
Makes sense to me especially as fast as we are growing—imagine when we become 40,000 members KM may need to cut the time down to 24 hours. I don’t know what we will do when we hit 100,000.
Camping is convenient. But the reasons provided above are good justification for limiting it.
It would be kind of annoying. But I really should get in the habit of logging out of sites when I’m not using them. Especially in light of that link doxxing thing going around.

Maybe the exodus will begin and MGTOW.com will ascend into the heavens.

Lol! Props for the simcity2000 launch arco. 🙂
I don’t mind the 48 hour thing. I’ve been on plenty of sites that require you to log back in after only an hour (or less) of non-activity.
