This is a follow up to this thread /forums/topic/living-in-a-mini-van/

My original plan was to feel out what living in a van would be like for a temporary amount of time. Now i plan to just live in my car. My plan is to use the money I save on rent, and throw that toward my student loan. I would easily be applying $1000 a month to it

get a tent. you will be happier. I lived in a tent for 5 months. in a warm climate, the tent is better.

I live in a 5th wheel in Puerto Penasco Mexico. My lot rent is $1850.00 a year. Utilities $35.00 a month and my whole is $80.00 and she’s making curtains for the windows. I suggest you check out Cheaprvliving YouTube and blog. Wealth of knowledge for van dwellers.

There is no easy answer to life.

As soon as you think you have it figured out, curveb~~~~ get thrown at you.

I lived in my car for a while, and it sucked. I had a ’76 Caddy with 500ci, white leather interior. I’m 6′ tall and was close to being able to lay stretched out, head on arm rest. It was the middle of winter, but I used (still own) the military mummy sleeping bag.

No way you will do that with a modern car.

A van will be way more comfortable. Unless you like laying awake because you cant find a comfortable position, the only time you will be able to sleep is when you are completely exhausted.

I have a friend who currently lives in his van. He chooses to do so. Showers at the local YMCA, parks at places near WI-FI hotspots, and lives a totally free lifestyle.

Don't chase tail. Turn yours around, walk away, and live free!

I don’t know where you live, but the police often harass people who sleep in their cars here in the USA. If you park at rest stops or Walmarts, you should be fine. You can use a gym membership to take showers.

All I want is an easy answer to life.

Van life defiantly has a minimallistic, simplistic appeal.

The thought of saving cash and home is where you park it has a bohemian live free kind of appeal to it.

The biggest concers centre around, legalities, cold climate, waste management, and then downsizing your whole existance into a 5mx2m metal box. It would be much easier to do part time while renting a w/end house outside of cities.

In a warm climate with a combo of camping and boondocking I think the lifestyle could be appealing.

You said your balance for student debt was over 20K. So if you can miraculously save $1000 a month, that is still going to be like 2 years of living in a car. This plan is not going to work, there is a better path.

I think you’re brave and clever to consider such an option.

There are advantages to having an actual shelter. A place to lock the door and lie down without any worry at all. A fridge. Heating/cooling. A shower!

I do not think your situation warrants such measures. I slept on a fold out couch for 4 months and that alone was driving me mad, imagine having having nothing but a car seat. Your back is going to be killing you so bad (no matter what physique you have) you’ll end up pitching a tent or sleeping behind a tree in an effort to have a flat surface. I slept in the trunk of a compact car, its hell.

Also consider the real expenses associated with trying to live in a car. You will not be able to save $1000 a month. You will constantly be having to shed cash for all sorts of miscellaneous s~~~ you used to not need.

All the crap Mickey mentioned before. All these small hygiene items, batteries, flashlights, car stuff, nights at motels, gasoline and I’m sure there are more. Don’t do it bro.

Find a room mate and move in, or find one to move in with you….there are options.

Something like this gives you the basics. Have space for a few items. Space you can get cleaned up. Cooking space. Sleeping. If need be you can drive it to work.
Living out of a car is crisis situation, no choice.

    OP here.

I was a little disappointed yesterday to find that I did not evoke the kind of support I imagined I would.
I actually thought I would have had a lot more support for this,
but thanks for convincing me that the lifestyle is not quite as glamorous as Internet bloggers try to make it seem.

Everyone has their own way to forge here. That said, I think if you decide to live in a car to pay down student loans you will quickly regret that decision.

The men here that have had to live out of a car, I’m guessing, did this out of necessity, not choice.

Before you jump into anything like this try to take a vacation and do it out of a van or a car.

Which is exactly why I wanted to pose this question to this forum. I wanted to figure out whether or not it would be practical, it seems the consensus is that it’s not, therefore I can ditch the idea and move on. If I had never heard of the experiencesame had by these other men I would still be fantasizing about it.

This is not a f~~~ing AA meeting where we all pat each other on the back and act like women. If you want validation and attention, you’re on the wrong forums.

You thought you were gonna have a bunch of men come and cheer you on for living in a car? Are you a f~~~ing dumbass? Why are you listening to “internet bloggers” in the first place? WTF do they know? Have you ever slept in a car for more than a day? It’s uncomfortable as f~~~. And you want to live in it? Doing what? Sneaking into hotel lobbies to pillage food? If you want to pay off your college debts, get a better job, or get a 2nd one. That’s what most rationally thinking people do. Not decide to sleep in their car. Men on here advocate PROGRESS. Not regressing and making poor life choices.

Yeah, go sleep in a car…. Dumbass. What? You’re disappointed we hurt your feelings? What a mangina thing to say. You come on here with some c~~~f~~~ery and we’re supposed to root for you like a bunch of cheerleaders? F~~~’s sake man!

NOTHING about living in a car is glamorous. In fact, why are you even using that term to describe sleeping in a tiny, confined space?

Life isn’t f~~~ing easy! You tough it out. Stop looking for shortcuts and do the work. You went to college, you amassed the debt, now bust your ass and pay it back. Get a 2nd job if you have to. My dad worked two jobs right up until the time I was a teenager. And then worked two jobs again in his early 50’s for a year so he’d have extra spending money. If a guy in his 50’s can do it, what excuse do you have. You’re like these soft mangina millennials today who want everything handed to them and don’t want to have to deal with any adversity.

For a year, I traveled all over the country, sleeping in cheap hotels working for a company that built aluminum bleachers for schools and sports complex’s. I worked in the hot sun for 8-10 hrs a day, where the temperature on the bleachers was an extra 50 degrees hotter than the normal temperature. Carrying s~~~ up and down steps all day, and hanging sections of fence. F~~~ing sucked. I was seldom home. Then I had to listen to s~~~ when I actually GOT home.

When I was paying my student debt, I got up at sunrise, and worked until sundown. Every day. Wasn’t easy. Life ain’t easy.

IRuleMe, I actually am a millenial by the way, and you need to take my word for it when I say that I do work hard, but like I said, I have been convinced that I was wrong to conceive that this temporary living situation wouldn’t yield any real lasting dramatic effects.

If I really wanted a shortcut that badly I would have just gone out and done it without asking what kind of experiences the guys on here have had first,

And clearly the they were s~~~ty experiences

All I want is an easy answer to life.

Life isn’t easy because nothing worth doing is easy.

If you want an easy life, get the surgery and hormone treatments necessary to become a woman.

As for our alleged lack of support, this isn’t a f~~~ing hug box.

In the thread you linked, iMickey503 wrote several very detailed posts containing all sorts of advice from when he lived out of his car for over a year. If you don’t think that was enough help, that’s your problem.

IRuleMe was entirely correct when he told you to stop looking for shortcuts. Your own stupidity and lack of planning has put you in the hole you’re in now, so only your own blood, sweat, and tears can dig you back out. You were stupid enough to take out those student loans despite over a decade of constant media reports about the huge problems arising from such loans. You thought it wouldn’t happen to you, you thought you were special, and you thought wrong.

Now, instead of taking practical steps to fix the problem you alone created, you think living like a f~~~ing hobo will fix things. The men here have already told you how hellish living in a car or van can be but, just as with those student loans, you think you’re special and what happened to them won’t happen to you.

Rather than living like a bum, you need to look into minimalism. I’ll bet you have a phone which cost hundreds and a monthly calling plan too. I’ll bet you pay for cable and have a Netflix subscription or something like it. I’ll bet you have a car payment for “more” car than you need or use. I’ll bet you rent “more” apartment than you need rather than a studio or room. I’ll bet you eat out more often than you cook in. I’ll bet that when you do bother to shop for food you don’t shop wisely and throw out much of what you buy.

I’ll bet I could walk into your life, make a few simple changes, and save you hundreds a month. All it would require is some clear thinking and some personal discipline.

Do not date. Do not impregnate. Do not co-habitate. Above all, do not marry. Reclaim and never again surrender your personal sovereignty.

If your loans are that high, and you’re struggling to pay them back, it sounds like you went to school for the wrong s~~~.
