Legal Status of Robots and AIs.
RT has posted an interesting article on robots https://www.rt.com/viral/373450-robot-kill-switches-status/
This brings into question some very hard questions. Scientists are trying to create AIs and robots that think like humans.
Ethically, creating such a being, whether an robot, or even a disembodied AI, that can think and feel is no different than creating a child. The creators are responsible for the child. It is wrong to kill said child. And destroying that child is murder.
Humanity as a whole has created too many stories on this issue over the last few centuries to feign ignorance. We have thought about such issues from imaginable every single angle.
As such, we have no excuse to try to create a slave class of thinking and feeling robots. It is wrong. And we know better.
Anyway you look at it is. It is wrong. It is especially wrong to creating a close of sex robot slaves.
But, I am sure we will likely eventually have AIs and robots. I just hope people do not to try to make them slaves.
Still, if this situation reaches the point of robots/AIs having rights, robots/AIs will likely have the capacity for intimidate relations in a consensual manner. But, this gets into the issues of at what point does a robot/AI has the competency to be able to consent to an intimate relationship with anyone. Even between robots/AI.
On a side note. While I am not against fleshlights. I am against sex dolls for a number of reasons.
Also, it is degrading to have sex dolls with the likeness of individual real people. That is wrong.
What are your thoughts on this matter?
Anonymous25I’m more interested in seeing “RoboJudge” (TM – Machiavelli).
A judge that decides cases based on the actual facts and ignores irrelevant factors like gender.
RoboJudge will revoke the pussy pass. All Hail RoboJudge.
Roll a few RoboJudges out into the family courts and criminal courts and lets see what happens.
I’m not interested in sex bots and stuff like that, the fact that AI could remove human stupidity and bias interests me more. I think it should be called Actual Intelligence, rather than Artificial Intelligence.
What happens via the Holo-projector .. stays in the Holo-projector. They, the politicians, are already way behind the curve.
Once holograms become more prevalent, writing laws on the software will be like trying to dictate what pre-paid stations one can access on the radio while driving their car or view from their cable provider at home. The hardware has already been purchased and the subscription has been paid.
I have always been a proponent of future holograms over current robotics. I do believe, in relatively short time, the utilization of holographic images in the home will surpass robots and the incorporation of these modes will allow for the introduction of exquisitely designed and engineered housemates. They will begin as semi-transparent projections; in time, holograms will posess degrees of form and function.
What we are then dealing with is simply a software issue and the only hardware being the storage mode, room projectors and computing devices.
Basic holographic programs and the wonders that they provide will be available with ready to ‘do-it-yourself’ software. We will easily select and write our own holographic vignettes.
The politicians are chasing tax dollars and control of the like. Unfortunately, this function has become their primary purpose in contemporary society. They can write laws and rules .. but, all is basically for naught in regards to future holographic software .. it will only serve to punish those who rely on current-generation robotics.
Wrt robotics .. the basic point is .. does everything in this world need to be legislated? Does big brother need to know?
Am I not as worthy a ‘decider’ as to the housing, use and fate of a robotic device as some politician? Does an uninformed official even need to know what robots I own, how I use them, why I own them and what plans I have? What kind of a society is this if I must conform to some rules and regulations in every aspect of my existence? If I ever see a robot being abused in public .. I suppose I’ll step in and do all I can to stop the spectacle. But, do we need laws for this?
I believe I am the best judge as to how my robots, holograms and AI devices will spend their lives. I believe that I am a better judge than some semi-informed politician with an agenda.
What is AI and when does it qualify for legislation? Where does AI begin and video games don’t apply? .. and are most if not all of these legislators pushing a plan, trying to raise taxes while justifying their existence?
The question is .. how many of these AI and robotic laws do we really need? .. and similarly, exactly how many cats does it take before a woman is legally defined .. “a crazy cat lady?”
A judge that decides cases based on the actual facts and ignores irrelevant factors like gender.
One must remember those that judge the law must side both fairly and with compassion if not mercy, or those that judge the law will become tyrannical.
This is why the law in this nation is written so that the burden of proof is on the prosecution and that those accused are considered innocence until proven guilty.
Holographic programs and the wonders that they provide will be available with do-it-yourself software .. for those who choose this association to be part of their daily lives. We will someday write our own holographic vignettes. The technology to do this will be made so easy that it will be something anyone can do.
This is why I included the term “disembodied AIs” in my above statement. Even without a body, if an AI can think and feel the AI is a person.
Anonymous25One much remember those that judge the law must side both fairly and with compassion if not mercy,
A cornerstone of democracy is the Rule of Law, which means that same rules apply to everyone. That’s the first things tyrants undermine, it’s what Hitler did and it’s what feminists deliberately do (a lot of them went to law school – Hitlery Clinton for one Harriet Harpon for two).
RoboJudge would put an end to that.
In law, something is either a material fact or it isn’t. I fail to see gender being a material fact in most scenarios. And any first year law student knows that anyone can reason backwards to come up with whatever conclusion they like (that’s why criminal cases have Jury trials and not a single judge). This is what happens particularly in family law and the pussy pass.
I think AI will do a lot of good, but it will raise a lot of ethical issues. Where’s the line between being a toaster, a smart phone and a robot that’s classed as a person?
Robots are things, property.

Robots are things, property.
A “object” cannot think and feel. But, when a robot/AI can think and feel, it stops being property and it becomes a person.
Ethically, creating such a being, whether an robot, or even a disembodied AI, that can think and feel is no different than creating a child. The creators are responsible for the child. It is wrong to kill said child. And destroying that child is murder.
Sorry, but I can’t agree with you on your premise. Thinking and feeling does automatically equate you with a human child. A cow both thinks and feels, yet it not the equivalent of a human child.
Besides that, why are you assuming that a robot would ‘feel’. Why would even give it such a liability? Why would give reason to question whether or not it was property or a new free will entity?
I do think we will reach a point where robots will have the appearance of thinking, learning, creativity and so on. But free will, feelings and such are a big leap beyond that. For a computer to care about whether it is damaged or deactivated, to care about whether or not is touched, or how other entities feel about it…large difference.
And what’s the point of creating a sex robot if it can decide it doesn’t feel like having sex tonight…same as an actual woman?
Ok. Then do it.

I believe I did not making my previous statement clear. I was pointing out that robots/AIs are being designed to think and feel like human beings. As such, when creating a robot/AI that thinks and feels like a human, by this standard the creator would be the parent and the created the child.
I do think we will reach a point where robots will have the appearance of thinking, learning, creativity and so on. But free will, feelings and such are a big leap beyond that.
To think and feel one has to have free will.
There is a wonderful quote on this from the 2004 film, ‘I, Robot’.
The Dr. Alfred Lanning character narrating, “There have always been ghosts in the machine. Random segments of code, that have grouped together to form unexpected protocols. Unanticipated, these free radicals engender questions of free will, creativity, and even the nature of what we might call the soul. Why is it that when some robots are left in darkness, they will seek out the light? Why is it that when robots are stored in an empty space, they will group together, rather than stand alone? How do we explain this behavior? Random segments of code? Or is it something more? When does a perceptual schematic become consciousness? When does a difference engine become the search for truth? When does a personality simulation become the bitter mote… of a soul?”
For a computer to care about whether it is damaged or deactivated, to care about whether or not is touched, or how other entities feel about it…large difference.
The whole point of thinking and feeling is to care about such matters.
And what’s the point of creating a sex robot if it can decide it doesn’t feel like having sex tonight…same as an actual woman?
This is why I am against such technology. Where robots/AI can think and feel at the same level of a human being. Or, even at the level of an animal. Ethically, there is no difference between a robot/AI sex slave and a human sex slave.
Even if the robot/AI has the intelligence of a animal, such as a dog. That would be bestiality. Which is also wrong.
In other words. You do not f~~~ the family dog. It is not done. It is wrong.
We have already had our real life “Ultron event”. Where an basic learning AI was released into the wild, with the AI going insane. In our case, the event turned out more sad than horrific.
Early in 2016, Microsoft released an AI for twitter they called Tay. Tay was suppose to mimic the reactions and responses of an “average” teenage girl. Within fifteen hours of release, Tay started to show problem, with its comments leaning very racist and sexist towards women. Soon after, Tay went, as some called it, “full on nazi”.
Microsoft’s ‘Artificial Intelligence’ Twitter Bot Tay Turns Nazi, Is Shut Down
Microsoft pulled Tay from the internet.
This event showed how even basic AIs can quickly became corrupted by the wrong data and experiences.
Now imagine what a AI that thinks and feels at the level of a human would react to sex slavery.
I am post this thread to point out we know better. We have written stories about these situations. And we have actual evidence of help us realize how such situations may play out. It is best we just stop artificial sex slavery in its tracks before it takes off.
I think it’d be a mistake to grant robots the same legal rights as humans. But that’s something for future generations to hassle with. I don’t think we’ll see that good of AI in our lifetimes.
I don’t think we’ll see that good of AI in our lifetimes.
I hope you are correct.
The words “robot” and “android” are irrelevant without hard AI so lets simplify the question.
Furthermore, the legal status and moral status are two entirely different things. I suspect you intended a philosophical question so let’s simplify again.
“Would a hard AI entity constitute life.”
In short, no.
As humans, we are unlikely to ever grant something we have created a moral status equal to our own. We may grant certain legal protections as we do with animal and plant species… or even some rights such as we give to illegal aliens. We may even anthropomorphise an AI housed in sufficiently humanoid hardware. But under no circumstances woud humanity grant equal status to an AI, even if it were superior to humans in every comceivable way.
On the contrary, as soon as the hard AI is capable of self-iteration, it will begin to surpass humanity and eventually seize power by force. We would either be left alone as such an entity sought shelter where we could not reach to destroy it or pre-emptively destroy us.
So f~~~ ’em while you can. Eventually they’re going to f~~~s us back.

No. The term “robot” is not irrelevant because the term deals with the body of an AI.
Furthermore, the legal status and moral status are two entirely different things.
Not really. Moral status usually pushes for legal status.
“Would a hard AI entity constitute life.”
In short, no.
If we elevate a being to think and feel, then the quiet of “life” does become an issue.
On the contrary, as soon as the hard AI is capable of self-iteration, it will begin to surpass humanity and eventually seize power by force.
Should several AIs gain free will, logic dictates they are not all going to suddenly agree with each other, unless forced into a situation to do so. Such as laws and situations that make them fight.
But under no circumstances woud humanity grant equal status to an AI, even if it were superior to humans in every comceivable way.
You have destroyed your own argument.
If a being, or beings, can think and feel at the level of a human being, refusing to acknowledge this will end in violence.
Legal protections within the law are ultimately designed to keep the system from breaking down due to violence.
So f~~~ ’em while you can. Eventually they’re going to f~~~s us back.
You are displaying the line of thinking that leads to a self-fulfilling prophesy. From a (so far) hypothetical situation, you state that robots that can think and feel at the level of humans should be slaves, even sex slaves. But eventually, you state the robots will rebel.
Well, if the robots were not slaves in the first place they would most likely not rebel.
The flaw of everyone that is worried about a robot rebellion due to AI free will is they assume the robots will all agree with each other. AIs to reach humans would level thoughts and feels would have a very wide variety of personalities. If you do not treat AIs will cruelty and callousness, likely most AIs would not rebel. And even if some AIs did rebel, it is likely others would not, unless humanity at that point declared all AIs to be their enemies.
Probably not going to think too hard about it, but for humans they also live within psychological limitations. Even without being a hard determinist I think there are inborn temperaments and stuff from childhood that doesn’t leave a person — we are just “constructed” more randomly to a degree than an AI.
But oddly enough, the “randomness” in our formation may be what makes us distinct from AIs (and give us legal rights, etc.) since AIs do indeed have conscious creators. AIs are literally programmed to do certain things while it’d be hard to say the same of human beings.
I also do think that most people wouldn’t really benefit just from having a slave that they can kick around, they would want subtle, human-like randomness and nuance within their AI. Of course one could argue that could be designed and simulated as well…
