I met a couple of women who did that to me, and it worked! They could have set the hook and reeled me in. The simplest way to avoid all of this is to 1) recognize that this is Psychology 101, and that it affects everyone, regardless of gender, equally; and 2) realize that people are people.  Women, men, all of us are people, and we’re all after a lot of the same things, and will act similarly in all circumstances.  If you approach women with the idea that they have no more “mystical power” than your drinking buddy, then you won’t go far wrong with how to handle yourself.
