I’m looking to get a Dell Or HP laptop in the sales. Are the screens on HPs generally better than the Dells? I’ve heard Dells screens aren’t the best. The two models i’m looking at are the HP Pavilion Or the Dell Inspiron 15 5000.
All advice appreciated,
Mutineer.

I am more partial to HP…My experience favors me to HP laptops vs Dell…Dell in my experience had bloatwares. My HP laptop is already old but is still running fine with windows 10…

Hp laptops are work horses. I remember buying one for 500 bucks and it wouldn’t die. I beat the crap out of it. No experience with dell laptops.
I use a Dell and have no complaints. My previous laptop was also a Dell. I have used HP laptops in the past and never found them to be as good.
However, I do use an HP desktop and haven’t had any issues.
You might look at the refurbished laptops. Those that fix such laptops usually remove all the after OS bloatware, and have a fresh OS install. Also, the refurb sellers tend to add more ram memory and other upgrades to may the refurb more attractive to buy, at a cheaper rate than new.
My high end Dell XPS battery swelled like a poisoned pup- stopped the touch pad working. Very poor design. The screens are good though…..good resolution and IPS etc.

Generally I hear that Dells are better, but it all depends on how much you’re willing to shell out. The last Dell I used was a Windows 95. It still works to this day.
I had an HP with Vista that lasted 7 years, which isn’t bad for a hard working laptop.
I’m currently typing this on an HP with Windows 8 (downgraded from the s~~~ty 8.1) which is about 5 years old, and still running strong (boots in about 3 seconds).
I also own an HP with Windows 10 for gaming, but it’s pretty s~~~ to be honest. I blame the OS more than the laptop brand. 10 has so many glitches, and it’s a very temperamental system. Many solid and useful programs have problems running on 10.I recommend reading lots of reviews for whatever model you’re thinking about purchasing. I think both Dell and HP are much better brands than some others on the market (I’ve had nothing but problems with Toshiba, for instance).

@mutineer I’m a computer repair technician and own a computer store, so listen up.
Dell, HP, Acer, it doesn’t matter. None of these manufacturers actually make anything inside the computers. The bottom line is, NOTHING you can go and buy from the store is going to be good quality at ANY price point. In the last 3 years, quality has gone down at LEAST 70%. What’s worse, the laptops aren’t even remotely repairable. They’re all 100% disposable garbage that you’re meant to throw away in 6-12 months.
The ONLY laptops that are still decent quality are business grade machines. You know, the computers that hospitals and other big businesses buy. They’re about 20x the quality of anything you can buy in the store. They’re repairable and upgrade-able, and will likely last 7-10 years. The only problem is they’re very expensive new. So your best bet is to buy one refurbished.
It depends on what your budget is. The Dell Latitude E6430 with an SSD is a great laptop that should last you at least a few years. You should be able to find one for $250 or less, and it will be at LEAST 3x faster than the $300 Walmart laptop. Just make sure you get one with an SSD.
If you want to spend a bit more and get a better looking, lighter computer then I recommend the Dell Latitude E7450. It’s a solid laptop and can usually be found with an SSD for less than $500.
If you want a smaller, lighter laptop then look for the Dell Latitude E7250. It will have the exact same specs as the E7450 but will come with a 12.5″ screen vs the 14″ screen on the E7450.
You can also buy an HP Elitebook, or a Lenovo T-Series laptop. There are only three main business grade laptop manufacturers – HP, Dell, and Lenovo.
Pavillion (HP) – Home Class
Elitebook/Probook (HP) – Business Class
Inspiron (Dell) – Home Class
Latitude (Dell) – Business Class
X/P/R Series (Lenovo) – Home Class
T Series (Lenovo) – Business ClassBe wary of any so-called business class laptops on HP/Dell/Lenovo’s sites. For example, Dell sells a $400 “Latitude” business laptop. This is NOT a real business class laptop. How can you tell? Just look at the warranty. If it doesn’t come with a FREE 3 year warranty, then it’s NOT a business class! A business class laptop INCLUDE a 3 year warranty, and you should be able to extend it to 5-10 years for pretty cheap. A home class laptop will have a 1 year warranty and you can extend it to 3 years for some ridiculous price. These manufacturers know that their home class stuff is garbage these days and they’re not going to give you a decent warranty, or even let you purchase a warranty unless you pay them HUNDREDS of dollars a year.

I can confirm. I have a business grade old Thinkpad T-series, indestructible, tossed down from table a few times, put in backpack while travelling a lot. Manufacturer tested that in car crash test, data was still okay after it.
How to detect if it has a good frame? surface must be hard, it should not bend when you lift it up by grabbing the corner one hand. Of course it will be heavy. But ultra thin ultra books cannot deal with abuse anyway.
Just toss a lot of RAM (twice the amount you need now or as much as you can afford) and an SSD (faster and no problem if it falls down from the table) into it as an upgrade, and have a fresh install of the operating system. (I hate when some shops still sell some laptops with 4 GB ram, if you start doing stuff that fills up quickly)
