I’ve posted before. While I’m in decent shape (just ran a half marathon in 1:35, a full in 3:29 and various 30ks and 50ks placing in age groups in 2 half marathons and a 30k this year) I also lift and stay toned, yadda yadda.

My downfall is booze! It hasn’t always been this way – I was miserable living with the Selfish One and used booze as an escape or to make living with her tolerable.

No excuse now b/c I’m FREE.

I’m questioning myself – am I making excuses? I’m really social and have friends that almost every other night want to meet for a beer that turns into probably 3-4 IPAs. Then I feel like s~~~ the next day. Drag myself out of bed, work – run or workout and then do it all over again.

How do I break this stupid trend? I feel so much better when I don’t meet my buds for beers but I enjoy the company.

I’m thinking I limit the outings to 1 night on weekdays and either a Friday or Saturday.

Any one else have this issue and how do you manage it? And don’t give me that cold turkey bulls~~~.

You have to change your “buds”. Unfortunately, in my experience I couldn’t keep my drinking friends when I stopped drinking.

Why not join a gym, and meet new “buds” there, and after working out go home??

I’m thinking I limit the outings to 1 night on weekdays and either a Friday or Saturday.

It was a lil hard to play this game for me.

I “managed” it for years, but the only thing that worked FOR ME was that “cold turkey bulls~~~”, but hey do what ya want.

Read your post, you answered yourself.

Yes you are making excuses, you buddies are gonna kill you, it is up to you, tell them to slow it down, tell them you had enough, if they are friends they will help, if they dont then you are lucky, you just got rid of a bunch of maggots eating your liver.

To those following me, be careful, I just farted. Men those beans are killers.

    Here’s my rules for drinking:

    1. NEVER bend over to buy booze. That’s where they keep the cheap stuff. It’s liquid headache. Only drink the good stuff. Much better buzz and easier on your body.

    2. Figure out what you can drink and how much without feeling it the next day, and then do that. Personally, I can drink bourbon or vodka and feel fine the next day. Whiskey on the other hand makes me feel like s~~~ the next day, so bourbon not whiskey.

    3. No sugar. That’s a personal one, but a sugary drink also makes me feel like s~~~ the next day.

It sounds like IPA doesn’t settle well with you. I love IPA’s but it does the same thing to me, so I don’t drink them. Or maybe just one.

So, my advice would be to try something else.

    Order the good wine

@awakened So I am a member of a gym and trail runners drink after runs – its like a cultural thing. Even the races are sponsored by breweries. This isn’t a problem – its the mid week runs that end at a brewery that get me!

@taxguy I don’t bend over to buy liquor – I like good bourbons – Blantons, Buffalo Trace, Elijah Craig, etc.
    – Great point finding the tipping point between a few drinks and the line where I feel s~~~ty the next day! I don’t drink mixed drinks – so no sugar.

Tryings something else? I hate water beers like Coors, Ultra, etc. they don’t do anything for me.

I think first I’ll limit the outings per week. Second I’ll TRY and have fewer drinks at each outing.

Did not check up on the research. i think its bulls~~~:
    https://musetreatment.com/5-foods-that-actually-reduce-alcohol-cravings/

There was some food or pill that injects a substance that counters the effects of alcohol absorption.
    https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2178480

Not sure how well this works.
    https://www.wikihow.com/Avoid-Getting-Drunk

Eat a spoonful of yeast to negate some effects of the alcohol. A small spoonful of baker’s yeast has been shown to break down alcohol the same way your liver does, preventing you from getting as drunk as you would without it.[8] Simply mix the yeast in with water or yogurt and down it before you start drinking. While the effects aren’t enormous, they can potentially lower your blood alcohol content by 20-30%.[9]
This will keep you from absorbing some of the alcohol, but it will not keep you from getting drunk by itself.
Note, however, that there is some scientific debate about the effectiveness of using yeast.

Alcohol is not bad for you. It’s what it breaks down into that kills you and your liver and your brain. High grade spirits are better for you. its methanol that kills you.

see how it goes or try playing pool.

Going to a bar during the week is gonna lead to drinking. If your buddies aren’t willing to hang out any other time, they ain’t really your friends, they’re just guys you go drinking with.

We just don't realize life's most significant events while they're happening. Back then, I thought, "Well, there'll be other days". I didn't realize that that was the only day. - "Moonlight" Graham

I order water or ice tea. My boys don’t even seem to notice.

I’m not anti booze, I’m just getting in shape and losing weight.

Best thing you do is to change your habits.

Don’t go ou on week days, only go out in weekends.
Find out the amount you can down, without feeling like crap the other day, as TaxGuy said.

    And learn to say NO.

"Young was I once, I walked alone, and bewildered seemed in the way; then I found me another and rich I thought me, for man is the joy of man." Odin, Hàvamàl, stanza 47.

So I’ve passed up invites to go out during the week. I don’t have to go to every single invite. Also, if I’ve had a few beers after work at home I have steered away from craft beers and felt great the next morning. As a result I’ve had better runs and have logged 37 miles so far this week and have a race Saturday. So even if I take Sunday off I’ll finish with 43 miles.

Feel better, more energy and more productive.

    Thanks for the tips, fellas.
