This is a rant, brothers. Plain and simple. I hate to do it here, but very few other places on the ‘Net or in the world allow men to speak their minds about such things freely. I would start a blog or maybe make videos, but that’s such a large time commitment and writing this out is honestly a lot faster for me.

I don’t hesitate to say that everyone on this forum pretty much understands the myth of the wage gap, the reasoning behind why it exists and what choices are continually being made to contribute to it. That said, it annoys me when someone who makes as much money as Jennifer Lawrence starts bitching about it.

For those unfamiliar, Jennifer Lawrence just wrote a letter about why she gets paid less than her male co-stars (specifically in the film American Hustle) for Lena Dunham’s newsletter, the “Lenny Letter”. Of course, the media jumped all over this and praised her for “being so brave” and of course her feminist and mangina fellow actors and actresses patted her on the back for it. And in the interest of being fair, I haven’t seen American Hustle, so I can’t comment on how much work she had to put into her character.

    That being said…

When the Sony hack happened and I found out how much less I was being paid than the lucky people with dicks, I didn’t get mad at Sony.

First of all, she admits herself that this was a problem in her negotiation. This is a large reason for why there’s an income gap in the real world as well; even men who don’t negotiate earn less than men who do. It’s not as if the boss says, “Oh, hey guy. You’re a member of the Patriarchy? Well, here’s a hiring bonus, but don’t tell the ladies because we don’t want them to find out. We start them off lower and make them negotiate their way up.”

But if I’m honest with myself, I would be lying if I didn’t say there was an element of wanting to be liked that influenced my decision to close the deal without a real fight. I didn’t want to seem “difficult” or “spoiled.”

Which brings me to the next point: All of these actors are more experienced, more accomplished, and (in the case of Christian Bale) made unhealthy sacrifices to contribute to the authenticity of the film. Why is it so hard to grasp that for feminists? I work to clean up after people and resolve customer concerns all shift long AND I go to school; why am I not being paid more than the on-site investor who basically sits in an office all day and takes weeks-long vacations frequently? Because the work I do can be done by ANYONE. I don’t have a refined skill set yet, I have a basic one that pretty much anyone with a brain and a half-decent work ethic can do and I haven’t been around very long (relatively speaking). If the company has big problems with how we’re spending our money, I’m not the one that goes to the chopping block and either turns us around or gets fired for it (I may get fired if it is deemed financially prudent, and that sucks, but it’s only because I’m expendable and not because I f~~~ed up, meaning I still have good references if I have been doing my job).

So what producers are paying for are the names of these people and their skill set. Christian Bale has been acting since he was 8 and had to work up from commercials. Both Jeremy Renner and Bradley Cooper have been acting since the mid to late 1990’s and started in a fairly usual way of taking on small film and TV roles and working their way up. Bradley Cooper has three Academy Awards and a Tony. Christian Bale has a total of 56 awards to his name including a Golden Globe and SAG award. Jeremy Renner has a Golden Globe and 52 awards of his own.

Why the hell, then, should Jennifer Lawrence, who got her start 9 years ago, who has (to her credit) an Academy Award and 9 other awards to her name and who immediately got a start as a recurring character, not a guest character, in a nationally-syndicated TV series, be paid as much? Yeah, she’s popular with Tumblr girls because she isn’t as skinny as some other actresses and makes her more “relate-able” or whatever and is already being paid more money than anyone on this forum makes, I’d wager, but let’s bitch because more talented, more qualified actors got more money. Imagine if I, an entry-level worker, went into work tonight and demanded I be paid as much, if not more, than my supervisors. I mean, after all, I’m better liked by the customers that come in frequently. Makes sense, yes?

F~~~ this stupid society, I swear to God.

I’ll teach you the handshake later. Great post.

The ridiculous thing to me is the carry on about Amy Adams. I like her, but she’s basically a b-grade actor who was in stuff like the Muppets, Enchanted, Night at the Museum part X.

Now she’s acting alongside Christian Bale – one of the talents of his generation (imho). It’s her ticket out of B-grade fluff movies into A-grade drama.

How much should she get paid? Nothing. She should pay THEM for an opportunity like that, and say thankyou afterwards. A-grade actors make their money AFTER they’re established, not along the way.

If Stifler scored a movie role alongside Meryl Streep or Jodie Foster, would he get paid the same amount? Hardly.

Fun game – if this comes up around the water cooler in your office and some lass is carrying on about it, challenge her to name 3 Amy Adams movies. In the silence, move the conversation on to sports.

    Wage gap =’s already disproven
    Women :.
    1. Less hours worked
    2. More like to take maternity leave opposed to paternity leave.
    3. Less likely to work overtime
    4. Financially less effective (deemed by CEO profit measurements).
    5. More likely to take longer vacations

Aside from these basic points, the wage “myth” does not measure salary against differing fields.
If there were more female tree cilimbers, oil field workers, and bridge painters (etc), there would be less of a wage gap. Still smell fish fellows?

the question she should be asking is why the f~~~ actors make as much as they do in the first place….the gap she’s so concerned about, probably in itself is more than most people make in years….

I wouldn’t say the wage gape is “disproved”, per say. It exists, just not for the reasons feminists would have people believe.

Not to mention that the original model of $.77/$1 didn’t include experience, which is a major factor in the story I posted.

I guess my frustration lies in the fact that here is a woman who just made a couple million (I can’t remember the exact figure, but I know it was somewhere between $14M-$19M), who got a jump-start in her career just by being attractive, who has a major award already on her resume, who has a huge fan base and is in two major franchises and she’s already bitter! And from what I understand, she was only in the film for around 15 minutes. Ridiculous.

and that real reason would be called the free market. supply and demand for labor. nurses in california make a lot more than nurses in other states because they’re short on nurses in california. same work, different pay. it’s not discrimination or oppression. it’s the free market and it’s the fairest system this planet has ever known. Not perfect but better than anything we’ve ever had (except maybe the native indian system of there being no such thing as property)

In order to get my flying career going I initially worked …… for nothing. I got my expenses covered & medical. That was it.

When I started my photography company, I worked solid for a year …. for nothing. Just to get the shots & names.

I would still go prove my worth for zero should I know that once proved, I would advance.

Can you ever ever imagine one of these entitled bitches doing that?

No … for them the first port of call will be a legal appointment.

Shut the fk up girls and shovel the gravel.

But onto the topic. I really agree with OP here. I really don’t see her issue with why she’s getting paid less than her male counterparts. She is, in fact, getting paid more than most actors that aren’t in her pedigree. I mean, come the f~~~ on. She has The Hunger Games and X-Men on her side, and on top of that any David O. Russell film that gets her nominated for an Academy Award. The people she’s working with are more experienced than her. Christian Bale has been working since the 1980s, and was f~~~ing Batman, with his Batman films making billions of dollars in the box office. The actors she’s working with, for the most part, are more experienced than her. She’s 25 years old, while her male counterparts are in her late 30s and early 40s doing more intense acting.

The film business has also intensified when it comes to acting. You have people who gain weight and lose weight for roles, like Christian Bale. And Bradley Cooper. And Robert De Niro. And Ed Harris. And Jared Leto. And many, many others. I have never, in my life, seen an actress who would do those types of things in films. The only woman in my mind who would do something like that is Hilary Swank, who won two Academy Awards for playing a gender-confused boy and a boxer. That takes more skill than lots of roles women take.

The basis for them, in their minds, would be to play roles of women that look pretty and aren’t that complex in nature. Katniss, Mystique and her other roles don’t look like it took hard work to embody, especially compared to people like, I don’t know, Christian Bale and every other actor I’ve mentioned.

I’ll give her credit, though. She is a great actress. And a sexy-looking one. I’ll be fine to admit that here. But there’s a difference between being paid less than others and earning less than others. And in this case, I think she earns less than others. Besides, this whole wage-gap thing has been disproved too many times now, and these people just don’t want to have a discussion about it. It’s just sad.

I don’t have a clue who Jennifer Lawrence is.
But I do know this… Women are thee worst negotiators! If they aren’t in a position where they can grind you down to get what they want they are just a mess. They have no idea what they want and no clue how to get it.

Besides hearing this same wage gap crap over again, what really bothers me is all the intelligent people who definitely should understand this, do nothing concrete about it. I mean, if you actually want women to under the same as men regardless of jobs, etc, then why wouldn’t you do something concrete about it? Why don’t you find away to get women to negotiate better. Why don’t you push for women to take on higher paying jobs (I do see some of this)? Why don’t you try and get better salaries for the careers women normally take? Tell women that it’s not about how hard you work, but about how easily you can be replaced. Anything other then pushing for a law you know would do absolutely nothing for women.

Honestly, the best thing you could do would be to get women to start taking the s~~~ty jobs only men will do. The idea that women can somehow can get their share of the great jobs without taking their share of the s~~~ty jobs seems ridiculous to me. You could also take away all the advantages that women get from marriage and divorce, etc. No better motivator then knowing you’re going to get where you want to go and if you don’t go there yourself.

    Ok. Then do it.

The most cringe-worthy topic out there right now is the “wage gap”. All of these women can seem to prove that it’s there, but not that any systematic discrimination is going on. All of the facts out there prove why men make more. To sum it up: they are better workers.

First of all: she’s LUCKY to be a paid actress! If you go to Los Angeles, there are a million women standing in line who are desperate for ANY acting gig.

Second: getting a good paycheck for a Hollywood film has NOTHING, I repeat, NOTHING to do with gender!!! If you can sell tickets, you’ll get paid a lot of money! You don’t even have to be as experienced or talented as the actors you’re working with. It’s all about ticket sales & DVD sales. If you can draw a big audience, you can demand a lot of money.

What Jennifer needs is a better agent to negotiate a better paycheck if she thinks she’s worth it. It’s a cop out for blaming her fate on men. And how horrible is her fate in the first place? She’ll spend the rest of her life making MILLIONS of dollars while 99% of us will have a dead end job until we retire. She’s not mopping floors in an office building or making hamburgers all day in a hot, stuffy kitchen. She has a great future ahead of her. So what’s the big deal? Get an agent to negotiate a better salary. The more popular she becomes in her films, the better her asking price will be. Most Americans will have to work 40 years to get the same amount of money she makes in one film. Boo hoo, bitch.

The most cringe-worthy topic out there right now is the “wage gap”

What the female sympathizers fail to realize is: the Bureau of Labor Statistics gathered a bunch of AGGREGATE DATA about the salaries of men and women.

    ag·gre·gate
    noun
    ˈaɡriɡət/
    1.
a whole formed by combining several (typically disparate) elements.

What this means is: the data does not take into account the individual circumstances of each worker. Some workers who had 38 hour work weeks were put into the same category of full time workers as those who had 40 hour work weeks. If anyone, man or woman, works less hours and has the same pay rate as another worker who works longer hours, you can’t come crying to me about an imagined wage gap.

I remember a Tom Leykis video about getting a job and how men and women have different views about it. He explained that men know they have to work for most of their lives in order to upgrade their financial status and provide for their spouses and kids. Women, on the other hand, know they have the option of taking a break from their jobs/careers in order to raise kids while their husbands work. Women also know they can get on welfare if they have deadbeat boyfriends who won’t stick around to help them raise their kids.

If you’re a man, you know what your fate is. Most of us have to swallow our pride and get to work. Some guys steal and others end up homeless. But most of us know that we’re doomed to work for decades before we have enough money to retire.

"I saw that there comes a point, in the defeat of any man of virtue, when his own consent is needed for evil to win-and that no manner of injury done to him by others can succeed if he chooses to withhold his consent. I saw that I could put an end to your outrages by pronouncing a single word in my mind. I pronounced it. The word was ‘No.’" (Atlas Shrugged)
