I was on the can flipping through the August 2014 Reader’s Digest.  I lifted it out of my doctor’s office.
I decided on the “Points To Ponder” section.  You never know when you might stumble upon a particularly rich pearl of wisdom.

    Here it is.

Women’s magazines aren’t really about what women want at all but what what men want of women and therefore, what women should want.  According to these magazines, women are expected to be strong yet soft, intelligent, but nor more so than the man, wild yet domestic.

    Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

of course he doesn’t know what he’s saying. If he did, he would tell those magazines exactly WHAT WOMEN WANT. Go ahead Kareem, shoot.

There is an analysis of advertisements in women’s magazines out there somewhere. Psychology Today, maybe, it’s been a while. As I recall through a haze of time and mild disinterest, those ads are pitched to create feelings of inadequacy. “You will never look as good as our model — but, if you buy our products, then you just might not look as bad as that face in your mirror.” Something like that.

I don’t think it contradicts Mr. Abdul-Jabbar, exactly, but it didn’t bolster his case either.

Judgy Bitch did an article on a related topic just the other day. (FYI, Valenti is a famous man-hating feminist.)

Jessica Valenti is obsessed with men finding her sexy

You know he’s got a point but he’s taking it the wrong way. Sure its got to do with what men want, but you’re blind if you think its FOR men. Everything in women’s magazines are the tools to exploit male sexuality. Makeup, shoes, clothes, everything that makes you appealing to men, not to draw the appeal of one man, specifically for the sake of attracting the unreciprocated attention of all men for some kind of narcissistic complex. Theres even f~~~ed up guides that really should be titled “100 ways to manipulate your man”. Thats basically the extent of the articles and the entire purpose of the magazines.

    EXACTLY!

On the blogs here, we have recognized that women dress up to go to work, friends, classes, etc.  At home they wear sweats and no make-up while they are around their man.  To be honest, I find the casual, make-up free, tennis shoe wearing type to be more attractive than the woman that puts on her face with a trowel.

But I also believe that they dress up the way that they do to compete with the other women that they are around.

Have you seen the way the can be catty about other women’s appearance while they are around other women, but they don’t talk that way around men?
