Unlike most kids that wish for stuff, I was thinking about Speakers. Vacuum Tube Amplifiers and Audio GEAR!

SO LET ME SHOW YOU WHAT I GOT MYSELF!

I was JUMPING and COOING like it was the best day of my life.

I was not a Big fan of Magnepan. But then… I read and article on how THrifity the founder was. How cool he was, and how they man just make great things for the masses and always had his eye price and Quality.

It went into all the great things they did and OH BOY MADE in the USA! Yesterday, even my Speakers went their own way.

No cones. No Boxes. Just sweet thin Flat panel goodness.

    WELCOME to ORIGINAL MG-1

THe internals of the speaker look like this:

Actually, many people have built their own. And there are TONS of upgrades these days to make them sound EVEN better then when they left the factory back in the 1970’s

Its always made me wonder why you did not see more of these in the big box stores. But then again, it does not seem so far fetched when you take a listen to these speakers. You REALLY need to be in the sweet spot. But they do sound MARVELOUS just the way they are.

THey are a little worse for wear, but that’s PERFECT! I think the wood is REAL OAK! REAL OAK GUYS! REAL WOOD! Now, I am not a BIG fan of the color of the sock. But its still nice looking. No tears whatsoever.

Man. My little Kenwood receiver is just not cutting it. THESE REALLY LOVE POWER! GOBS OF IT!

And the best part is. I got them for a SONG.. And I’m talking about 99 of them. WOW!

Next thing is to get a TUbe Amplifier. I REALLY love the way Mercury Rectifiers work. And the GLOW. Man, they sure knew how to make things back then. So I am hoping I can build one like that one day.

MGTOW boys IT MAKES your DREAMS come TRUE! WOHHOO!!!!!!!!!!

Awesome! Although not quite in the same category as that setup, I recently finished restoring an old Onkyo receiver from 1979 (rated at 65 watts per channel, RMS, into 8 ohms at a very respectable 0.03% THD — none of this “power inflation” crap where they rate the output power at 2% THD). This thing was so well designed that the power amp bias was still within spec (I did adjust it a little closer to the center of the range, but still, pretty amazing after 40 years). I have a little Nikko 22-WPC receiver that’s waiting for me to get to it. It’s nothing special, but it was my main receiver until I got the Onkyo and I’ve had it so long (almost 30 years) that I have a bit of a soft spot for the thing.

Now I just need to get some decent speakers (mine are Technics 3-ways from the late ’80s and their response is nothing close to flat).

    Nikko 22-WPC receiver

When I think of Nikko? There is one thing that I still have from when I was I think 12 years old. And Purchased from Kmart.

I had no idea they made other things. I solely thought they were a toy company. You know if I put some batteries in right now? It would start working without missing a beat. I Need to buy a replacement wing for it. Man, all these years, and I still look at it and it gives me such joy.

the new one is still very cool looking. Nikko just hit it out of the park with this model. No wonder they still sell it all these years later.

And it seems like its been selling since the early 80’s at least in the USA.

And it seems like I’m not the only fan of Nikko products.

And Jeepers. Think this guy is from Oregon as well and does the review for the new version..

Shame for the new kids. They are going to look back to the internet archive. Full of nothing. Maybe they can Make a new Hashtag.. #mydreams?

Also it seems that SEARS was a re-seller of Nikko brand audio gear. Looking at what the Nikko stuff looks like, it seems that I may have owned one in the past and foolishly gave away.

If you are talking about this guy? I OWNED one. And I loved it.

I’m not sure what speakers came with them or bundled with them from the sales floor, but I am pretty sure these are it. And the thing is? I’m sure the speakers have been around at a few parties. I know they were around for a few of mine!

And they still look new and sound great. And in PERFECT condition minus the outside wood. That need a small amount of tlc.

What is truly amazing about Onkyo is not their gear, but how they chose to be the quiet giant in Japan and elsewhere.
They sure had some great men at the helm over the years. Real engineers and people with a passion for excellence.

As much time as I spent reading audio mags back in the 80’s I do not know anything about this name at all. Interesting bit of tech.

    Very cool Mickey!

Congrats on your score! I’ve never heard Maggies but I have heard Martin Logan electrostatic speakers and they are great too. As for your desire for mercury vapor rectifiers, I designed and built an amp with a mercury vapor rectifier power supply using 866A’s but the amp is a 300B single-ended Class A amp with about 10 watts output. Not enough power for what you want to do with your Maggies but it is by far the best sounding amplifier I have and I have a bunch of tube amps that I’ve built over the years. The most powerful amps I have use push-pull KT-88’s driving a direct copy of the old Eico HF-89 output transformers. They are in monoblock format and they also sound fantastic but the 300B amp is still better by a hair. The monoblocks put out about 60 watts or so.

    Anyway, enjoy those great speakers!

    Ed
