I graduated with a degree in computer science and I’m currently working towards getting quite a few IT certs while on the side, learning database languages as well as other programming languages.

However, I’m getting so sick of applying for jobs that half the time I just lose motivation for it because I know most if not every employer won’t even call me back to tell me if I’ve got the damn job or even to tell me if they rejected me.

Not only that, I literally look like a child. I’m 25 years old and I can pass as a 12-15 year old if I’m in casual business clothing. Sometimes, I may be able to pass for 16-17 years old. So even when I get an interview, I feel as though the employers just reject me outright because of how young I look.

I was thinking about starting my own website, but I’d have no idea what to make it about aside from an educational website about computers/other technology.

I’m open to any and all ideas for a business. I’ve been searching online, but quite haven’t found out what I quite want to do yet.

I don’t want to end up making lots of money, I don’t care for that in the least. All I want to do is end up making enough money to move out of my parents’ place. I’m so sick of living with them.

    Thanks, I definitely will.

That’s definitely a great idea. I might end up doing something similar if things don’t work out in the corporate environment.

I won’t ever end up giving up. I just know the corporate environment, especially, is a hard thing to get into right now. Especially if you have no experience in your field. The requirements they put on the job description just for entry level is ridiculous.

I’ll keep on doing my best to find a way to end up getting a fulltime job of my own though.

Do it, I’ve been spending the last 6 months setting up my business. It should be complete by christmas and I’m still in college.

I realized currently making minimum wage if I made 50$ a day 7 days a week I’d be making more money than I could working 40 hours a week minimum wage.
40 hours minimum wage at 10$ and hour is 1600, but when you include what you lose from taxes off the bat it’s actually only 1360.

50$ 7 days a week is 1400$ which isn’t much money at all on a daily basis, it becomes self sustaining, and I can continue to build and expand with it.

I’ve been working since 13 and am thoroughly tired of trying to find minimum wage paying jobs while going to school, being around incompetent lazy people and for every dollar I earn, I probably make 50-1000$ for the company.

If you’re serious in life being your own boss/freelance payes off in the long run massively, even if in the short run of 2-3 years it’s harder.

Brainstorm, make a business plan and give yourself 1 year to be working for yourself. I have about 6-7 months left.

    Anthony,

Not sure what that all meant. But sounds like advice you couldn’t get anywhere else.

I’m in the same spot too. I keep applying for crummy minimal wage jobs that keep me applying and interviewing. You’re right; what they specify what they want for entry level jobs is ridiculous. They want at least a year’s worth of sale experience, but where does that year of experience come from? I thought entry level jobs is where you go to GET experience and move up to intermediate level jobs. But no, now they want experience to do $8.25 (Illinois minimal wage) part-time jobs. It seems like in order to get a job, the manager just has to just give it to you out of kindness.

Like I said, I so sick of always applying for jobs, but I like to get going on starting an online business. I tried (still trying) to build a fancy gaming PC and sell it on eBay, but here we are now in August and it’s still hasn’t been sold and hardly gets a viewer. So the custom PC build idea has left me discouraged.

I thought about making a pay download where you make one file and it just sits there making money every time someone buys it. Because of Pokémon Go, I have 2 ideas for cool phone apps. So I feel like making a download for people to pay for. Unfortunately I don’t know anything about code or calculus.

I thought then to start an adult chat site, but I don’t know how to make a site outside of Webs.

So what’s a guy to do; come up with great ideas I can’t pull off, or keep applying for jobs that won’t even respond? If I sold that stinking gaming PC, I would have about $4,000 saved up.

Disregard what HR put in as requirement criteria in their entry level job ads. They are doing that so people will self-selectively exclude themselves from applying. Apply anyway.

Also, look for platforms for internships and work experience. It’ll go a long way on your resume. It’ll be a lot more than what some CS grads and even I.T. professionals do… because some of them lied their way into their job without knowing about the systems they were going to work with (I have seen this first hand).

Also, in the way of coding, build up a portfolio for your website, with apps and programs you have written in your language of choice, if you want to get into what Stealth does (and what I plan on getting into myself). Or, if you’re an aspiring Network Engineer or Architect… just try and get your foot in the door within the tech dept. of said company, and then make your way around the niche you want to get into by getting on your employer’s back about it.

Good channels to check out for some motivation and advice…

Simple Programmer, Engineered Truth, Eli The Computer Guy, and Trevor Freeman (The Ordindary Life). Eli has a great video about HR’s expectations of applicants and the skills they have/need, and how there is a disparity and misunderstanding between tech departments, I.T. managers, and HR people. It really as a god damn mess out there in the job market, Jesus…

Stealthy, do you have a degree in Computer Science yourself?

Yep…Informatica dude, liniux, perl, sql server, db2.

I know quite a bit of Linux, and a little bit of SQL (not much to be even intermediate level as of yet though)

    RE Housing.

Do you live in suburbia or the country?

I live right in the city in an apartment. My room is also used for storage. So yeah, I barely have enough room for even a desk chair. What I plan on doing once I have enough money saved up is putting a down payment on a van and converting it into a camper. Then, I’ll end up setting my home network in there and studying at rest stops or gas stations.

if you want to get into what Stealth does (and what I plan on getting into myself). Or, if you’re an aspiring Network Engineer or Architect… just try and get your foot in the door within the tech dept. of said company, and then make your way around the niche you want to get into by getting on your employer’s back about it.

That’s what I plan on doing. I also plan on getting network certifications as well as database certs like Stealthy posted. That way, at least my resume will be flexible and strong to employers.

There is a government program of retired business people that will provide low cost advice to start ups. Google around for it.

Why not doing any cool kind of free software project and using that as a reference for employers?

If you’re trying to get given a job, it doesn’t matter what you know- only who you know.

I’ve been applying for handyman and caretaker and maintenance work for ages, I got skillz yo, but nothing. then I met this one guy by chance and he said he’d take me on next monday… unfortunately he was in the throes of blue pill nonesense and beating his wife. Last I knew he ended up homeless on the street and I never heard from him again.
Point is; it doesn’t matter what you know, unless you are working for yourself. Unless… you are going your own way!

Well you can work on saving money more efficiently if you cannot “make more”.

-Food is the first thing that comes to mind and you can feed yourself comfortably for about 5-7 dollars per day while maintaining a decent level of nutrition and calorie count.

-learning the basics about fixing your own car and buying the parts on your own.

    -etc.

There is not much of advice here, but rather a perspective: If for the time being you cannot make more, try to cut corners where you can.

How have you been Resident Evil? It saddens me to hear that your custom build PC has not sold. If I may elaborate on my IT job and the benefits that I reap from it. In one of our last encounters I stressed that an IT job is probably better than going solo. Well as life is cruel we can never be sure of the truth.. I have 15 years of experience and 10 years of professional experience after my formal education. Microsoft certified IT professional and Cisco networking CCNA Lv.2.. I Make $1920 a month for 40 hours a week at a rate of $13/hr (high end of pay for PC repair and networking in small offices) I ahve worked for my company for almost 4 years and noone in the company gets a raise… I have ~$400 a month state mandated child support withheld from each check. I am more than happy to feed my 4 year old son who I have 2 weekends a month but let me tell you he does not eat $400 a month. Each month taxes are ~$300 Federal income tax is ~$150 and SSI & Medicaid are ~$150. I generally will lose 1-2 days of work a month due to slow days or the need to handle business that can not be done outside of regular hours. I live in a wealthy area and consider to be the luckyest person on earth to live right next door to work and at $900 a month rent it is the cheapest arrangement in town (YES CHEAPEST) I pay nothing for internet or trash pickup and also no gas or commute needed to get to work so here is how the numbers look for being a formally educated tech with 10 years of professional experience 4 years at this particular job.

Pay=1920-400 for cs making 1500-300 too for taxes making 1200-900 for rent (cheapest rent in my town is 850 but I’d have to pay for internet plus trash pickup not to mention the commute takes gas as well) making 300-130 for car insurance making 170-~200 for electric as this is FL and very hot so A/C is needed so now I am at -$30 thats right -$30 but it does not stop there because my cell phone is $35 (cheapest) so now at
-$65 oh but there is more I am a person so I eat, bathe, and go to he bathroom so for food/hygenic things at its cheapest $100 a month so now we are at -165 a month but you know my car runs on gas so at the very least $60 a month because I do have my little boy 2 weekends a month so now -$225 a month. Guess what I am near 30 and dental issues have reared they-re ugly head so ~$2000 in credit card debt for a root canal and crown this year and also my 2008 car has a transmission failure so $1800 for a used transmission on the credit card as well that is about ~200 a month in credit card payments if I want to get out of this debt in my lifetime so now at -$425 a month. now take into account that I will lose 1 or 2 days a month due to slow days so $-625 to -$425 a month. Oh you know what I forgot? Health care.. If I need my appendix taken out or have a broken leg or want to deal the the 3 hiatal hernias I have or ulcers or scoliosis I can go ahead and just forget about getting the medical attention and turn myself in for the production of soylent green. To Add to this I do not qualify for any tax credits or exemptions not do I qualify for any government subsidized housing or food stamps apparently I make too much money to deserve those basic human needs. Thank you society.

Like your parents always said learn a skill and get a job so you can pay the bills and be all right…
