How much more theory and practical knowledge would it take in order to cross over into pipe fitting or steam fitting with the accumulated knowledge one garners from the welding trade?

I’d contact the United Association of Pipe Fitters in your area.

Go ask someone already in the trade. That would be a reliable answer and he could perhaps point you in the right direction. Good luck broski.

You will need to be proficient with stick welding, all position, most likely up hand. Good with a grinder, and fit up. Good with prints, and problem solving. Depends on what you have been welding in the past, but if you are proficient where you are at, once your hood is down, it’s all about the same. You’ll probably have to get into some God-awful spots, and crawling around, welding overhead and on your back too. You will most likely have to pass certification testing also. If you have a place in mind, they will let you know.
    Good luck.

In all trades it takes time to get good because knowledge itself is only part of a trade skill. There is also simple repetition required to get up to speed. One also needs time to get a reputation with employers. When people want to go into my trade I always encourage them but I do warn them that it always takes time. Some are faster than others but no one is ever super fast. That doesn’t mean it is not worth doing. Just get advice from the best guys in the field as to what steps to take to progress fast. Almost all real experts are happy to share their knowledge of how to get good, so do not be afraid to write to a few successful business owners who have made it to the top of the trade and are hiring guys to work for them. If you offer to do a bit of work experience free of charge, you may get a job a lot faster than you imagined if you hit it off. Good luck.

Thank you for all of the helpful advice.
Thanks Crane Commander, I contacted Local 324 here in Victoria, BC. They said I need to contact the ITA. I have done so and now I’m waiting for them to answer back.
