I understand the plight of war refugees in the Middle East and those that live in extreme poverty in African nations, however, when I see images of riots and criminal behavior in European countries instigated by (mostly) immigrant youth, I don’t want to take the risk of bringing in those bad apples into the USA along with the good ones. Does that mean I’m a racist? No. I’ve had friendly relations with many people from Middle Eastern & North African countries who are able to live here peacefully. I just want to preserve what I have here: a relatively functional society. Although we have our share of domestic crimes, that’s no reason to create a lenient immigration policy that would exacerbate the mess we’re already in. Let’s clean up the mess before we even have a discussion about increasing the foreign population!
I don’t mind donating money to the Red Cross and other charities that will help the refugees build shelters away from the hostile areas. It seems to me that these refugees should figure out a way to resolve their social/political differences in their own territory rather than failing to assimilate in countries who have successfully established social order (after centuries of struggle). I can support refugee camps in their territories and, perhaps, armed resistance if they truly intend to form a government that upholds human rights (for all people). But I cannot support any immigration policy after seeing this social experiment fail in Europe.

I think there’s a compromise between doing nothing and bringing people here who may be ISIS supporters. Should be a way to work out a deal with a safe 3rd world country and give each of the refugees $5k to build a life there.

Anonymous42I’ve been exiled in my own county! F~~~ THE REFUGEES!
i’d rather they help themselves. a lot of those refugees are capable of fighting, clearly. so go fight for your home. when refugees number in the hundreds of thousands, that’s enough for a good sized army. what are they all running from?

The problem needs to be dealt with over there and over here we need to make sure they can’t get welfare, which will remove almost all of the incentive to show up for most of them. Don’t work, you don’t eat.

I think that’s a good alternative. Also: why not buy some unused land in the world and create some refugee camps there? I’d donate to that. If a reputable charity, such as the Red Cross, could set that up, people around the world could donate and there would be a safe place for refugees with a volunteer security force to control conflicts. The money that governments spend to bring refugees to their countries could be used to acquire some neutral territory.

Good post, was thinking about this a lot too. The thing is they could not handle any money, what those poor nations need is stability (no wars) an infrastructure and somebody that teaches them to feed themselves with what they harvest on their own.
Like this guy does :
http://www.eliminatepovertynow.org/father-godfrey.htmlThough I think the amenities that the western world has to offer are just to tempting for the people that just have to come here, then it´s not just food and peace, it has to be a nice house, car, TV and so on. Yet once those people are here they possibly get frustrated to achieve this standard and we know the result.

Give them 5k and you’ll see them in line again a month later.

Won’t work. Countries in the Middle East refuse to take them in and are not going to unless someone either twists their arm to do so, or gives them an incentive.
I don’t see any countries, or entities agreeing to host a world refugee camp on their land. But they could always consider building one in the Sahara desert, or in the Antarctic.
