It sounds good in theory in a college classroom. Back in my day they used guns and butter. One country could make guns and the other could trade butter. Can’t eat guns and can’t protect yourself with butter, so better to trade and stick to what you are good at. More is produced in total if you trade what you are good at for what you are bad at.

But when you tilt the laws to the point where you aren’t as productive at making anything, then you have a problem. That is what the US has done to itself. It’s going to be tough to go to war with China and make the phone call where you ask them to sell you some guns………

I grew up in a logging town and watched it all go away. It’s a renewable resource. You cut down a tree and you plant another (actually 7, but who counts). It became cheaper to cut down a tree in Canada, send the log to China on a boat, and have them mill it and send it back around the world than it was to drive it to a mill 30 miles away and mill the logs there. Now, absent some nonexistent tariffs, how does that happen? But the boats come to the US full of plastic crap and go back empty, so they don’t charge much for the return trip. Better to have any money on the return trip than none.

My high school used to have a logging class, a shop class, an auto mechanic class, and a class where they built a house. None of that exists today.
