I’m putting together some plans and blue-prints for a radio controlled flying thing I want to do- I say thing because I’m not sure what it will exactly be called yet, I’d say its somewhat unique.

However, I do know I will need a powerful power-plant in the heart of this beast (I want VTOL capabilities). I’m talking 40-50lbs of thrust. However, a turbine engine that can output that much will most likely cost a few thousand.

    or

I could go with an EDF (electric ducted fan). With brushless motors that are able to reach insane RPM’s, getting 50lbs of thrust with a couple of units is obtainable and a LOT cheaper (under $1000 dollars). However, the drawback there is that I would only get a few minutes of flight time at the cost of a relatively large battery pack, where-as with the turbine, it is easier to refuel and be mobile again, with less weight and longer range I’d think.

Another thing I need to consider is the heat the turbine will output, since it will be right next to sensitive electronics. I could reuse that heat if I attach a heatsink that feeds a small thermo-eletric generator on the craft, but I doubt I’ll get usable voltage to run the electronics on board out of that.

I do wonder about a wankle rotary engine for a powerplant in a ducted fan. Rotary engines are known quite well for their high rpms. I have a feeling it would be like the best of both worlds when it comes to what I need- lower temperatures, more fuel efficient compared to the turbine, and smaller.

My goal is to be able to perform at least a 15 mile trip one way, hover or do whatever for some time, and then have it return. Maybe an hours flight time even.

Many years ago, when I could still afford to have dreams, i did a lot of research on this. I believe I ended up considering the Wankel engines too, to power up 4 or 6 ducted fans. This, because electric is unfeasible due to battery tech right now and turbines would not work in urban environments and are a bitch to control. I’ll try and dig for my bookmarks ad articles archive, if I still have them and will send them to you.

The answer is NO. “I could but I won’t”. Memini murum!

Well, I did a quick google search and it seems that there has been a lot of innovation in the rotary engine VTOL field. Just google Wankel VTOL.

Do you know Colin Furze ? He does a lot of crazy engineering stuff on his YouTube channel and has build a Hoverbike with two big fans. One of my favorite YT Channel.

Jackinov, how heavy is your flying thing? There are guys using 10,000 Mah setups to fly 80 miles round trip on Dragon Link equipped craft.

I’m curious to see when (if) you share more details.

I wouldn’t personally mess with the turbine but I prefer proximity flying with homebuilt basher planes, so your needs sound way different than mine.

I failed to realize in my youth that I was the prize. I was going to work. I was going to earn. Little did I realize that due to feminism, that no longer meant I had to share. Road soon, Desert after.

I estimate it’s going to be around 30-35 pounds. I’m also going to mount a 4k camera on it so that will add to the weight some.

As you said, if I went lighter, range definitely isn’t the problem. The kicker is that I want drone abilities, but airplane range, speed, and flight time. Finding a way to merge that will be the main crux.

Not sure what your plans are, so here just my thoughts if you want to keep it cheap, use an old turbo. If weight is a big concern just forget about what I suggest. But it´s way cheaper than a RC turbine, manual skills provided…, it´ll produce heat just like a turbine too, and you could attach a shaft to it to drive a propeller or whatever. It´ll be heavier than a bought RC-turbine by a lot I guess.

The turbos they show are decent sized ones, there is a lot smaller ones.

I’ll definitely look into the turbo’s, although I have a feeling they will be too heavy for this project (35 pounds).

But I keep them in mind for future, ground-based projects.

well, hugely impractical from what i understand. But why not? lol

RE rotary – I used to own one. The biggest problem with the wankel design is the seals. Power to weight ratio is really good, but they need to solve the issues of seals wearing and blowing, especially with forced induction.
