Entrenched within the fabric of our society like glue, AFL has become less about the game and more about personalities and their inflated egos. This boys’ club, which kicks around racism and sexism like a football, brushes off criticism — just like broadcaster Steve Price did on ABC’s Q&A this week.
Thanks for explaining the joke, Steve. (Pic: Channel 10)When asked about The Footy Show’s Sam Newman defending Eddie McGuire after his comment about drowning commentator Caroline Wilson, Price said “… too much was made of what was originally a joke… ”. But it is this “just jokes” mentality which has spawned a culture so toxic that I actually now refuse to date men who are obsessed with football.
I can hear all the footy-fanatic men standing up, outraged. Aren’t I discriminating? Stereotyping? Maybe. But in my experience, men who are heavily involved in AFL have a certain quality that when times get tough, its ugly head rears. What is this quality? Male entitlement? Male dominance? Lack of comprehension around gender inequality? Lack of emotional intelligence (EQ)?
This obsession of watching game after game, tuning out of reality and into this male-dominated, macho, entitled world of football is quite unsettling.
Growing up, footy was very much a part of the talk between my cousins, but I never really got that into it. There was always something about it that repulsed and terrified me. Take a seemingly calm man obsessed with footy and put him in a footy match and he can — in a split second — become verbally aggressive, yelling like a psychopath. The threat of violence breaking out in heated matches amongst drunken yobbos has caused me to stay well away.
But the spectators are just feeding off the culture projected by the sport itself. Drugs, sex tapes, and rape allegations are just part and parcel of this national treasure we hold so close to our hearts.
This week a video was circulated to media outlets with a $150,000 price-tag, allegedly of NRL player Corey Norman performing a sex act on a naked woman while pouring beer on her. These stories come up repeatedly. There have been so many I have tuned out. Wrists are tapped and the cycle continues. Nothing ever changes.
Parramatta Eels’ five-eighth Corey Norman has allegedly been caught up in a sex tape scandal. (AAP Image/Dean Lewins)Our taxes support this cycle of disgust. Apart from lucrative sponsorships deals, the government provides funding to the AFL and NRL. It disgusts me that my hard-earned money goes towards putting these men on a pedestal to be looked up to — not just the players, but the commentators too. Whenever Triple M Breakfast is on I change station.
And it’s not just the men who look to these sport stars for reassurance and validation that their racist, sexist or abusive actions are indeed correct, but women too. These women who buy into the culture, who are in relationships with men who buy into that culture believe it is OK to be treated the way women are being treated within the footy culture.
When Rebecca Maddern was announced as the new Footy Show host in an all-male line-up, I expected the sexist outrage from men decreeing she would damage “their blokey show”. What I didn’t expect was the response from women I knew. “She’ll just ruin the show,” a female friend told me. “She won’t get the jokes and the men won’t be able to joke around and it’ll be boring. I get why people are upset.”
When I made a comment about the gender inequality she said “but it’s a man’s sport”.
Both men and women were up in arms when Rebecca Maddern was announced as the new Footy Show host. (Pic: David Geraghty/The Australian)The question is are we, as an Australian society, serious about issues like gender inequality? Are we serious about domestic violence and abuse against women? Do we want change?
The moment Sam Newman addressed Caroline Wilson on The Footy Show, defending his pal Eddie McGuire, the moment he said “The jig is up, Caro”, a million shivers went up my spine. What was on my TV screen symbolised in that moment what Australian culture is: a panel of accomplished, powerful men, one token woman (Rebecca Maddern, who also defended the men involved) and a direct threat, not to Caroline Wilson, but to women.
“If you’re going to want to be treated equally, the point is, don’t complain when it’s too equal,” Newman said. “The jig’s up Caro, honestly and truly. You’re becoming an embarrassment. And even if you were underwater, you’d still be talking.”
Footy has well and truly become about flexing muscles and reminding women where their place is in the hierarchy that is Australia.
In case you wanted a look at this wonderful woman:
She complains in her article that tax payer money (part of her hard-earned money) goes to the AFL. Yet, she is the recipient of tax payer money in the form of an arts grant to make short films with titles such as ‘How to get a F~~~’.
Am I going insane here?!
this is what bugs me so much about these dickheads (and the left in general) – they are the biggest hypocrites on the planet and can’t see it
Anonymous22She likes attention.
I can hear all the footy-fanatic men standing up, outraged. Aren’t I discriminating? Stereotyping?
Why would those men be outraged? I don’t think your opinion is very important to most of them so it probably wouldn’t matter either way.
Those men will find other women though, so don’t worry about that.

Then enjoy your cats.
PS: Who is that dude in the picture??
When women lead, destruction is the destination. -- Me.
In case you wanted a look at this wonderful woman:
Is it me, or does her facial profile look like a football?
Blue-Pill Virgin: Women hate me! That's what it is.
MGTOW Man: Hate them back; it works for me.Geez that nose.

First off most people just care about the game. Or at least that is what my father and younger brother say. Second it’s never been a boys club women regularly attend matches. Jokes are jokes not racism or sexism and how one chooses to take criticism is their own prerogative.

Personally I can never ever see myself dating any woman. I would pretty much just give an unconditional no regardless of the circumstances. However if the impossible where to happen I would never date a feminist f~~~ hole. On gender equality I think there is one reality that trumps all. Women are members of a sexual species of mammals, thus they automatically hold more power than men making gender equality impossible. One simply cannot hold that amount of power then claim that the ones without said power are equal.
This obsession of watching game after game, tuning out of reality and into this male-dominated, macho, entitled world of football is quite unsettling.
Men built the sport, men built the stadiums, men pay for tickets, men build and maintain the related infrastructure. It is male dominated because men built it, what have women created exactly? Where are the men complain about industries dominated and created by women? They don’t exist because if men want something they f~~~ing make it, while c~~~s like this woman bitch until someone makes it for them.
The question is are we, as an Australian society, serious about issues like gender inequality? Are we serious about domestic violence and abuse against women? Do we want change?
Australian has a homicide rate of 380 a year and the majority of them are men. Men are primary victims of homicide a far more serious crime than, the ever expanding farce that is DV. More women die from cancer in a year then will ever die at the hands of a partner full stop. But in all seriousness I think it high time to have, a nation discussion about teaching women to pull their heads out of their own vagina’s. Maybe we should start teaching women not to inflict violence apron children and men.
And it’s not just the men who look to these sport stars for reassurance and validation that their racist, sexist or abusive actions are indeed correct, but women too. These women who buy into the culture, who are in relationships with men who buy into that culture believe it is OK to be treated the way women are being treated within the footy culture.
If that is the case and if what this woman says is true then women are stupid. Or might be the fact that she is an actual misogynist.
Too all MGTOW’s outside of Australia or outside of Australian territories. I apologize for the existence of this long winded entitled diatribe by an Aussie feminazi.
A MGTOW is a man who is not a woman's bitch!
Are you really refusing something if you’ve never been asked? By the way, I looked up “Butt Ugly” in the dictionary and found that same picture.
Order the good wine
A woman that looks like this really can’t afford to rule any men out. Unless she just prefers cats.
Anonymous2Another ugly ass female with a victim complex and a case of Female Entitlement Syndrome. On top of that, she’s already past prime looks age for women, so she’s only going to get uglier from here on out. What sane man would be willing to put up with her? She’s going to be spending a lot of money on cat food in the near future.
She’d better study hard and get a real job, because no man in his right mind would marry her.
A man shouldn't make his life's objective to be on the side of the majority, but to avoid finding himself in the ranks of the insane. (Marcus Aurelius)
“I refuse to date men who….”
“Nobody asked.”
If you keep doing what you've always done... you're gonna keep getting what you always got.Oh,yeah.
Hatchet-face
Resting bitch face
Frumpy, dumpy sweater
Probably a body like Olive OylShe must be beating them off with a stick.
Fuck this planet. Are you really refusing something if you’ve never been asked?
T~~~’s logic = No man’s buying at $100,
so I’ll up the price tag to $1,000,000.
There, although no man’s buying, I’m more valuable now.I think I saw her in “Jaws”, but she was mostly submerged.
Now this s~~~ may work for some cars:

BUT NOT effective against mgtow because we are certain of the quality!!"It seems like there's times a body gets struck down so low, there ain't a power on earth that can ever bring him up again. Seems like something inside dies so he don't even want to get up again. But he does."

‘Well, isn’t that a coincidence, me too.’

Probably should be lowering her standards with that mug. Not increasing them.

But…But…Shes a special snowflake.
It's only after we've lost everything that we're free to do anything
Well I don’t like footy, but I wouldn’t date you because you look like Quasimodo’s aborted sister.
Marriage is the process of finding out what kind of man your wife would have preferred.
The question is are we, as an Australian society, serious about issues like gender inequality? Are we serious about domestic violence and abuse against women? Do we want change?
Honey if you want to talk gender inequality, I’ve got some right here.

“I refuse to date men who like Footy.”
That’s a laugh. Just look at her. Look at what she does for a living.
This whole article is nothing but sour grapes and sad wish fulfillment. This woman only dreams of the chance to make that refusal.
Sorry, laydee, but you can’t refuse what was never offered in the first place.
