tl;dr: title.
This is a quote about death from the book Hagakure, red in the greatly recomended film Ghost Dog:
Lets take the bulls~~~ out of the way first. The author is a samurai who tries to define bushido, a code of conduct that warriors followed during feudal Japan, that never was written, but in general terms it was about resolute obedience to your boss, even if he asks you to kill yourself. The thing is, the author lived in a time of peace, when samurai became mostly bureacrats. Nonetheless, he likes to brag how he likes to practice his cut in prisoners sentenced to death. Watch out, we’ve got a badass over here.
Still, this quote gets me. I have the Hagakure “logo” in my desktop and cellphone (locked or not) backgrounds. No need to psychoanalysis to find out why. I came to a point in life where I couldn’t go on with with my job anymore, so I decided to leave start something completely new from scratch. As rational and patience as I’m trying to be, as much time as I have to do it all without hurry, as much space I have to initial losses, I know that I still can fail spectacularly, Solano López style. I guess knowing that one day I’m going to die anyway makes me more aware about being just dust, and since the (not literal) inner voices won’t shut the f~~~ up, guess it would actually makes me more sane if I just listen to them.
There was a time where some men would gladly die in battle instead of living certain lifestyles(or so they say). Hell, I lived in areas where kids went to arms knowing they would hardly go beyond 25 if they do so. Its not that I’m trying to sound tough with all that, but trying to superlativize(!) what goes on for better understanding. Still, sometimes I think that if I fail to the point of no return, I’m not so sure if I would have any soul left to ask for a job or live by someone else’s charity. Maybe I would prefer to just departure. Never had any near death experience, so easier said than done. For now, I’m surprised with all my motivation with my new endeavors. Monday to monday I’m reading the whole day, stopping only to train, groceries, a movie or series, or when neighbour knocks on my door with pizza. In cold days I will forget to shower (gross, I know). Meanwhile, the logo is always visible, remembering me to not cower.
All in all, lets hope in the future all these will sounds like funny unnecessary drama. Testosterone drama. Samurais and s~~~.
Ya know?

Entropy always wins, we all get old, and we all die.
Death is part of life. Don’t fear it, accept it, embrace it.
Don’t give your life cheaply, but don’t fear what you cannot change.

Anonymous54We will all die.Unless its quik and sudden there will be time to reflect back on your life. What do you want to see?Factor this in when you decide how much risk to take. How much crap you dont take and how much you express yourself.I have narrowly escaped death many many times, lost many friends and loved ones along the way. I look back with few regrets.

I can vouch for this.

Well ya.
No matter how hard you try or how much money you spend death will eventually tap us out. How WELL you live is another matter all together. It is by caffeine alone I set my mind in motion, it is by the beans of Java that thoughts acquire speed, the hands acquire shaking, the shaking becomes a warning; it is by caffeine alone I set my mind in motion.

Great call to mention this grand flick, Ronin.
From the first time I watched it, it was very clear to me that this ghost dog character of the movie was as close to a mgtow as only a hand full of other movie characters could be.
I'd rather die a natual death with a clear MGTOW conscience somewhere off the grid than one within "modern" civilisation with a big stress mark on my forehead and a couple of dozen tubes plugged into my body. Back to the plantation..? Me..? Hey, literally: I won't ever fucking kid myself...YZERLMNTSIC
Anonymous3I watched the Matrix and Ghost Dog one day after seeing the other. For me they where two of the greatest movies ever.
That quote from the Bushido is great one for me.What think is largely misunderstood is what sword fighting is all about. In our days we fear death from a bullet we cannot see, so the stress of modern combat is knowing that you can die anytime without any warning.
A sword fight is different. You see the enemy approaching, and you know one will not survive, or maybe both will die from terrible wounds (warning, graphic content!).
I have a real sword (I need a special licence for it) and its scary as hell! I only use it for demonstrations and without using any strength I can cut a cabbage in half. Bones are very hard, so you can cut an arm, leg or a head with some strength, but in combat one would go for cuts and stabs. Its a lot less spectacular but lethal or disabling anyway.
You can take imagine what a REAL swordfight would be like just by looking at this training. These guys are crazy, I would not do these techniques at this speed without full protection.
It take a lot of courage just doing the kind of training that video shows! Now, imagine what a real swordfight would be like…
A samurai would need great mental discipline to face certain death, either by the hand of the enemy or by its own hand. The way they could face such destiny is to accept it and live it constantly in the mind, so that when it happens a samurai could face it with honor.

That is quite true, and the same thing happened in Europe with the Knights.
A warrior class has its time, but when it is no longer useful it prolongs its privileges by taking a “high moral code” as its reason for existing. This is the origin of the Bushido and a Knights code. The fact is that they where both romanticized versions of what a real warrior life would be.
The real samurai where actually head hunters, many times using treachery in battle. The real unification of Japan happened due to firearms introduced by the Portuguese. Once unified Japan did a unique thing, it made firearms forbidden and only the samurai could have swords. The Bushido is as much as a control measure as it is a moral code.
The knights story is similar. The romantic version of knight’s duel is false, many times soldiers on foot would interrupt a duel to help their lord when he was losing.
The interesting part is that the “moral code” gets transmitted to popular culture, so that even today we talk about knights as people fighting to protect the weak (usually a female). The Japanese are even more immersed in the Bushido code, as we could see on WWII.
Getting back to the subject:
In truth we are all going to die, and its a good thing. Can you imagine the bore it would be to live 1000 years?
In my opinion, either we die well or screaming and kicking, it does not matter. What really matters is that we live well. Sometimes people die without ever living fully, taking risks, doing what they love, being free, just for FEAR. Fear of failing, of getting hurt, going through hard times.
I actually have no fear of dying. But that is what I say now, I cannot guarantee what I do when its inevitable. Yesterday and the day before I went flying in a ultralight with friends that recently finished training. They where nervous wrecks, and they where the pilot in command! I was not nervous at all.

No school for it – never was.
Death sometimes scares me, because it could come anytime, anyhow with or without warning. Any one of us could die next week or 50 years from now.

There is this old story about a merchant in Venice that heard death was coming for him. So he said to his wife “if anyone asks for me say that I went to Rome”. And with that he was on his way to Verona.
Death comes to the house and the wife says “my husband is not here, he went to Rome.”
Death replies “I am not here for him, but it is strange, I have an appointment with him later on the road to Verona.”Death is an illusion at least on this universe. We are in a holographic projection so how can you die when everything you sense is not real at all.

The proposed meditation seems pointless. Yes, be aware that you are going to die, but what purpose does this knowledge serve? For me; Motivation!
Get the impending death panic, it helps you live while you still have time. I’m off to build some shelves for my tools, with the wood I hacked up this morning, what have you done today?
