So after some researching i came to the conclusion that my new desktop built will be based on Win10 spyware, no alternative really. Win7 is getting obsolete and Linux doesnt run a lot of software. At price tag of 100 €/Usd it is obvious that I am the product here and that profit margins are made by Microsoft by reselling data to 3rd party, just the same as with Google/Fakebook/Youtube.

I know there are some like minded individuals here that are fighting Microsoft updates, dystopian concept of “in OS ads” and orwellian privacy issues.

So for start I will turn everything off that can be turned off in microsoft.
    Then VPN
    Then Antivirus
    Then Malaware

What am i missing from here on ? Can updates be turned off or am I turning the brand new hardware into Microsoft plantation zombie ?

I recommend getting an intel I7, 32GBs or more of ram, Multiple SSDs of 500GBs or more, then running Linux Mint XFCE as the main OS. Then run VMWare player, (it is free), to make virtual operating systems. Now when you make a virtual OS make a master. So maybe you want to run some Win7 so make a virtual W7 and install the latest patches and what not on it. Then make a copy of that master and run only the copy of the master. Do the same thing for your Linux. Make a master copy and then run a duplicate of it. Whenever your dupes get out of control then just make another dupe from the master, takes seconds after you have learned how, and you are up and away again. You can also put your masters on usb thumb drives and take them to another computer to run. Much cleaner.

Don’t think he really needs an i7. An i5 also gets the job done.

Also, make sure the motherboard can actually handle 32GB of RAM. I wanted to upgrade from 8 to 32, but (before I went to the store) found out mine can only deal with 16 max. Didn’t go anyway because the prices are ridiculous now… 61 euro for one 8GB unit. F~~~ that s~~~, I’ll stick with my 2×4 GB setup until the prices drop again.

Also, Win7 is still a pretty damn good OS.

That actualy got me thinking, i already had a mouse pointed at confirm order. I can see the value at having stable linux release from which i run stable copy of win7 for applications i need windows to run. What about security here, if security updates are not applied isnt the fixed built vulnerable to new issues ? Also win7 gets no more support in two years and running win10 i again have no idea if it is possible or even if there is any reason to do that. I am building system for next 8 years hopefully and i can see a lot of new software requiring win10 to run, that is my problem here. Have no problem paying 100 € for virtual win10 even though this idea of paying for the priviledge to be spyed on and have ads showed down my throat somehow doesnt sit nicely with me.

Thanks, i checked and MSI Z170-A Pro should run 64 GBs if needed, this is the MB i am looking at now.

Commodore was a product that provided a lot of fun while win10 is a tool directly from 1984 of George Orwell so in my book Commodore is from good old times.

A Commodore 64 cobbled together with a Vic20 keypad was my very first computer ‘build’. Times were so much simpler back then…

With VMWare you can have as many virtual systems as you have space and resources for. So one of your virtual machines can be Win7, another Win10, another Linux whatever. You can keep them as up-to-date as you like or is possible given Microsoft will probably drop the updates for Win7. I recommend though that you always have a untarnished master so you never have to reinstall the OS if something goes wrong. Just copy it over. You might find you like having three or four copies of Win7 and Win10 depending on how you work. All virtual.

Nerevar is right in that you don’t need an i7 and can get by on a four core i5. I suppose. My last six or seven or more machines have all had i7s with at least 32GBs of ram. Even my laptops. A good laptop that will not have any trouble running linux as your base OS is the Dell M6800. It takes up to 4 SSD like disks, i7, 32GBs of RAM, and is quite nice. However it is now 2nd generation and no longer being sold. Which means you can get like new ones from ebay for a little over $1000 instead of over $4000.

Windows 7 can run anything worth running on windows. Linux can run anything that you don’t want to run on Windows.
