There is no need for your friend to get p~~~ed, unless he’s p~~~ed at himself. This female friend didn’t do anything to him, she simply took up on his offer to be an emotional tampon for her.

Rule of thumb for me, regarding female friendship. I don’t have a conversation with a woman that I couldn’t comfortably have if her BF or husband was present. It’s not exactly cheating, but it certainly isn’t helpful to that relationship, and is giving her an excuse to treat her husband poorly…since she’s getting confirmation that she can get her emotional needs met outside of the relationship.

But typically, I don’t just cut off the conversation. If she’s complaining that the dude isn’t doing enough for her, I ask what she’s doing for him. I logically explain his side of the issue. Most of the time it’s “that’s what he said”, and they never want to talk to me about it anymore.

Part of the reason women like to have many friends is so they can always find someone who agrees with their messed up POV, and just ignore the ones who tell them the truth.
