Today I ordered six gallons of Flat Exterior Paint to paint my house this summer. I am posting this because just the act of ordering the paint has greatly brightened my day .. I can’t believe how it has cheered me up during this long endless winter with snow drifts up to my shoulders.

Knowing that I will have this outdoor work ahead over warmer weather is something I look forward to doing. By the way, I stuck with the old fashioned traditional paint .. I prefer this style without all added features .. without the sun screen and primer. Cost was $21.99 a gallon, Flat Earthtone Macadamia Nut Color .. with free delivery. hav’a good day!

Sometimes, it’s the small things that can make a BIG difference in your day…..

I have been painting inside, makes a huge difference and I feel great about the accomplishment except I am only so good at painting… of course I started in the small bathroom where it is near impossible to fit the ladder… bedrooms are next so should be much easier!

I painted my Dad’s house, the trim. It was brutal work that will kill your shoulders. Solution, buy a condo in the city. No lawn to mow and no trim to paint. LOL. Only kidding as I know you would much rather have a real house, so would I!

Take it easy on the painting, it really will lick ya!

Was thinking about a sprayer for the outside of my house, renting a pro one to do it… still seems like a lot of work… but have to finish inside first

Home improvement are almost always a good idea. And painting is a relatively easy way to see big change.

    Ok. Then do it.

Yes, that Glidden Macadamia is a color kind of like stucco, maybe a little darker than average stucco. I live just down the road, several miles west of Taliesin North at Spring Green built in 1937 .. and each time I drive by that place on that hillside, I always like the way they use similar color on the building so that it really disappears or blends in with the slope. In the summertime, sometimes it’s hard to see it because it kind of disappears because if the color … that’s what I want to do. That’s where I got the idea to change to the Macadamia. He used that sandstone color in almost all of his buildings. I suspect I might have to put on two coats. My house profile sits low at one story and fascia is stained transparent redwood color and the neutral goes ok with that. They used dark stained soffit and fascia trim on that hillside house along with the main neutral Macadamia type color and that also gave me the idea to try it this time around and if it can blend in more with surroundings ..
and grass and trees and bushes than with some brighter color.

You can get 5 gallon buckets of premium paint for $23 bucks. SOme are used, some are not the right color. Try lowes. Women always bring back unused paint. And it’s the best deal I have seen.

As far as paint spraying, As long as you prep it right, the gun does just fine. Using a brush or a roller can have better adhesion, but if you did your surface prep right?

Just go to Hazard Fraught. Get a coupon. Get the $149 buck Air compressor, Break it in. CHange out the oil. Do it again with the cheap oil. Then go to walmart, get the good stuff, fill it up to the line after taking off the cover and getting all the metal flakes out. Go get 100Ft of hose. Pick up the accessory kit, a gun ($25-45) Pick up small cleaning brushes, and Thinner.

RENT a HIGH PRESSURE 8HP Spray gun. Get a RV washing Wand/Brush, And some Plastic. Don’t get the cheap s~~~ from Dollar tree. NOT WORTH IT.

EYE and ResPIRATOR! and gloves. A wedding dress is optional.

garden hose with Cheap Dollar tree dish soap. This will remove most of the grease. Scrub it down with the brush Rinse again without soap. Tape all teh areas you need.

Use a Blower to dry off all the nooks and crannies. If its about 80′, then get your paint and gun ready. Adjust the nozzle, Make sure is sprays a clean wide pattern. NO SPLATTER.

its faster to fix Paint chips, and areas that need sanding later.

Don’t bother with a ladder. You can get an extension. Or make one if you got a single story home.

You can have a LARGE house done in less than 8 hours. Next week, you go back to finish any problem areas and touch up.

    Its EASY.

I like to paint the concrete. Sets off the base of the house.

Purdy Brushes are great. But I have to admit, I just throw them away afterwards, so I just use the cheap swill.

Don’t forget the Expanding foam. You are going to find all sorts of small holes you need to fill and gaps.

Don’t spray on to thick. It will just peel crack and then start peeling in places where the wood expands allot. That is why Window moldings need to be painted with brush. The metal frame windows are notorious for this.

    Have fun bro! Its easy.

    areas that need sanding later.

I do have things to fill with putty because they replaced eves troughs and left the original holes. I bought a set of decent putty knives and for the larger area I need to fill under kitchen door .. I got the epoxy type wood filler with the hardner and also got the liquid pre-treatment to harden the wood ahead of time. I filled that with plastic wood before and it cracked so they tell me the new mix with hardener filler stays flexible enough to last awhile.

    You can get an extension

Yes, I have an aluminum extension and also one of those foldable that can makeup all those different angles .. the thin about that one .. it’s so heavy .. but once I get is adjusted it’s really stable. Also have an aluminum regular stepladder that is the one I use most of time .. light and I like the shelf with the holder for holding tools and the paint can indentation for holding can or pail.
I also plan to re-caulk most everything this time around .. I suspect it will take me a couple of weeks – part time – just to prepare things for paint.

if you got a single story home

That’s the one thing I like about single story .. it’s easier to paint .. but I do have one challenge .. the left front corner of house is near sloping hillside just beyond foundation so it;s an engineering challenge to get that soffit and fascia painted. In past, I’ve set up a set of boards and bricks to place under right or left legs of stepladder because the slope is fairly sharp downhill. For the outer most corner of fascia, I stained it from the rooftop leaning over the side because I couldn;t reach it from below .. I’d need some kind of scaffolding on that hillside next to corner of house. As a last resort, I dig some foot holes to hold the feet of the extension ladder and run it up along the hill to house and climb all the way up. I don’t mind the climb or leaning from the ladder as long as the feet are stable a little ways in the ground and won’t slip. I bent a heavy piece of wire and made a paint can holder hook for the ladder that slips around side and holds a half full paint can. When I need a break from up there I just put my paint brush in a ziplock bag and lay it over opening of can .. brush and paint stay fairly good until I return as long as there is shade.

    have to finish inside first

Same here, I’ve been puttying for awhile and need to put finish coat on two rooms as soon as weather allow me to crack the windows for some air flow .. until then, I;ll just have to look at the patches since the winter right now, well, it;s just getting into survival mode as I am even running low on snowblower fuel. I need to get to town this weekend and get some ethanol free fuel. Our biggest snowstorms of the season usually arrive in middle of March and sometimes into April.
We’ve had some nuisance Alberta Clippers lately .. but the ones that scare me are close to spring .. those that hook down through central plains and sit and pick up from the gulf .. and then head up through upper midwest heavy with moisture .. they usually arrive near the springtime. Soon, when it warms up I’ll open the windows again. For now, I’ll keep puttying and doing some trim. Last season I used the snowblower only twice. This season, I’ve really depended on it at least seven or eight times so far when it was really too much for me to shovel in one day.

My hands aren’t as steady as they once were, so the edge lines aren’t quite as good as I used to do, but still decent.

The actual painting is fairly easy… it’s the prep work that’s a pain in the ass (but that will make or break the job, so gotta do it)! I’ve been putting off repainting my workshop exterior for a while now (concrete block, previously painted and not in bad shape overall but I made some masonry repairs and it’s about impossible to match the color and sheen correctly, so time to redo it all). Probably should do that in the spring. I expect it’ll take about 3 days in total, if I don’t find any rot in the wooden frames around the doors.
