Most of us here will have no doubt heard about how Humanity is ignorant if it thinks it can control the Environment in order to make the lives of people more comfortable. We often hear about it from the perspective of destruction. But what about salvation? What if the true ignorance of humans is held within those who believe that they can save something already doomed to die? We think we can pull creatures back from the edge of extinction, but let’s not forget that evolution is constant, and requires certain things to die so that others can rise and live. I think that while we can curb the actions of other humans for the benefit of nature, (I.e stopping miners from drilling reefs), we can only really slow the inevitable. What are your thoughts on this?

We control much of our environment; farming and cultivating land, building dams, artificial lakes, and creating buildings that house us. We shape the world to a far greater extent than we ever did in the past. My home is heated, air conditioned, and humidified.

That said, the environment of the natural world is diminished by growth; clearing the land for mass agriculture to feed us, means fewer trees, fewer animals. Automobiles, houses, and our modern way of life depend upon metals that must be mined and of course, on petroleum. North America was a vast wilderness before development. Mankind valued this development over the natural landscape, so that’s what we have.

    First, two factoids:
    1. The Sun pounds as much energy upon the earth in two minutes than all the energy which all mankind uses in a year. In other words, one year equals 0.000003803 of mankind’s impact. (If this looks small, that’s because it is. Man’s contribution to the global climate is smaller than minuscule.
    2. Pollution is a horrible thing, and it must be stopped! (Not because of climate change, but because I (that is, me, myself, and I) do not want to breathe, eat, drink poisons. BTW, smog messes up the long range shots with my deer rifle.)

    Second, my conclusions:
    1. End all forms of pollution.
    2. That is all.

Men in Deli and Beijing are falling dead due to air pollution. (No kidding, literal truth.) With that in mind, ending pollution is a good idea.

On RoyDal’s point that actually might be possible. If you think about it Photovolatic panels are only about %15 efficient yet they can still produce several dozen KWH. If that efficiency were to rise and price were to stay down air pollution would fall through the floor. Cars would all become electric within a half decade and the cost of energy would nearly cease to exist.

Unfortunately, even if we had an all-electric economy, there would still be pollution to make all the batteries that would be required. It’s unfortunate that China and the developing world have built coal-fired power plants without emission controls. The real issue I have with coal fired power plant emissions, is not carbon dioxide, but toxic particulates such as SOX and metals, e.g. from plants without scrubbers or precipitators. PV solar has historically been one of the most expensive sources of electricity per kwh. Where I live, all alternative electrical generation must be subsidized because it costs more than coal, except for wind. One good feature of a wealthier world is, there is more money, resources, and attention to pollution control. Unfortunately, the developing world hasn’t caught up to the standards of the West.

I think we should pump up a s~~~load of oil and sell some of it and use money to build a new energy infrastructure using energy from the rest of the oil. Suck up the oil and use it to eliminate itself as a fuel.
