I’m reading that prison is an excellent welfare or retirement plan. (In fact, it seems to be a fad in Japan.) It doesn’t work for me — mostly due to the general lack of amenities — but I can see how it made sense to Denise.

That’s why I’ve never felt that prison is really a suitable punishment for people who assault, rape or murder.

Not only are you getting a free roof over your head, three meals a day, a wholesome supply of library books, medical facilities, rehabilitation and a bed, but the family of the person whose life you destroyed: their tax dollars are paying for it all.

If somebody killed a friend of mine, my tax dollars would be overseeing their prison cell.

If elected prime minister of my country, one of my first official acts would be to bring the death penalty back. For me it’d be community service or the chair. And even the community service would be harsh. Like going to the shattered families for whom you caused distress and being their unpaid slave for at least two years. And they’d get to whip you regularly.
