I suspect that the final straw for many was the lack of communication. If it’s a SNAFU – tell people. A simple notice will often suffice.
On the subject of trolls – or more accurately, in-house idiots, real trolls being rare – the site definately does require more aggressive moderation.
The site is now too big – and too important – to allow a complete free for all.
