OK I know this is going to sound a bit feminine to begin with, but hear me out here.

Several months ago I decided I was gonna grow my hair out. I was a guy who’d had short back n sides his whole life. I fully believed in the requirement to look ‘respectable’ and the need to ‘look the part’ if I were to become successful both materially and with women, and not to look like a ‘loser’.

So why did I decide to do it?

Well, this decision happened right around the time I posted my introduction on this very site and received some extremely sage advice. For all I had read and ruminated, I was still clinging to my ego – I was still on the wheel. In fact, the responses I received to my post have done more for me than all those books. Somehow I was able to accept it as truth from men who’d been in my shoes, who I felt I could trust.

I mean I feel I can trust the advice of Seneca and Marcus Aurelius, but they are somehow too far removed from my world for me to emulate.

This is the power of this site and indeed of MGTOW: not necessarily great rulers or born into wealth but ordinary, intelligent men who’ve been through the s~~~ of life and are still going, and more importantly have been strengthened by their trials. These are veterans you follow into battle and whose advice you truly heed if you don’t want to step on a landmine.

So back to the hair. For me this was symbolic, it represented a letting go of others’ opinions and my need for validation. For truly not caring what women thought, for the first time in my life.

I know, this probably seems funny to some MGTOW. If you truly didn’t care, why make a statement, why announce it? And that is true, albeit a more advanced outlook. However sometimes when a person feels he’s changed, he needs to be sure he’s not fooling himself. I guess this was a sort of challenge to prove to myself I had matured.

And I’m happy to say I passed the ‘self test’ with flying colours. My hair is now longer than it’s ever been, and though there have been a couple of awkward stages, I’m enjoying just letting myself become who I am, naturally. I’ve had a number of comments and sour faces from women around me regarding my “unkempt appearance”, and I’ve enjoyed it all the more for that. What a source of happiness to know the only power over me is my own.

I used to look in the mirror and in my eyes I saw a boy running scared, despite having the outward appearance of someone who had it all together. Now my eyes look sharp and fierce, and there is a harmony to my appearance that wasn’t there before. I still keep fit but have stopped going to the gym, I eat better and lighter. What’s more, I now see a man staring back at me.

I would like to grow my hair as long as I can, just because I feel like it. In the next couple of years I will be transitioning to a new career in the tech field, so there’s a chance I will have to keep things tidy and business-like, but the key here is that any future alteration to my appearance will be strictly for myself and my career, and not for a woman. EVER AGAIN.

    Thanks for reading.

    that’s great man

I too struggle with truly not caring about people’s opinions. Wanna hear how lame I am? My favorite tv shirt is a sleeveless work out shirt and I was wearing it one day outside. This total frat dude walks past me on the sidewalk and told me I looked like a douche for wearing a workout shirt.

I should have not cared at all, but I actually didn’t wear the shirt for a week because I was insecure.

So I appreciate your story and I’m proud of you.

Ironically I buzzed my hair recently for a similar reason. I’m tired of styling my hair every morning for female attention / approval.

I’m with Buck, I went shorter because it’s easy. My daughters thought it was a little too short. My reply: “Funny you think my appearance is a democracy. It’s not. It’s a dictatorship.”

But good for you. Just please don’t do the man-bun. Just say no.

What’s with all the hair/beard threads around here lately?

Its like Cosmopolitan or something. Next it’ll be ‘male grooming products’ and ‘5 ways to keep her happy’

I had long hair once, and in a fight the guy got a hold of my Barnet and kicked the s~~~ out of me. Never again, high and tight and ready to fight. Still….

I used to have long hair for most of my life and I loved it, but it is a pain to take care of and the older I get, the lazier I get. I bought some cordless clippers and now I go outside and cut my hair really short twice a year. Now that Fall is near, it’s about time to do it again.

For years and years I did this all through my teens and twenties: Grew my hair out long and then shaved it and started over again. I loved it! Like you said its a feeling of Freedom a NFG attitude. I am a banker now and have to have short hair I miss those days!

Of course a topic like this will sound like something a woman would bring up on here! but I think in this case mgtow_taoist might have a very valid reason to talk at length about hair. I took the liberty to copy and paste this from mgtow_taoist ⬇ profile.

I am doing the same thing as Taoist. I shaved my head my whole adult life. So I decided to do something different. I am enjoying it and I also get the comment I should cut it. I figure grow it out for a few years until I get tired of it then I’ll prob shave it off again.

I think that’s great. It’s not about the hair, it’s about doing what you want to do, for you, without concern for others opinion. It doesn’t matter what it is. You’re letting your actions and behavior say ‘no’. The more you say ‘no’ the easier it is to do.

    Ok. Then do it.

Kind of funny, i’ve done the same thing, let my hair grow out the past 3 years now. If i ever need to go look for a job again i’ll prob need to cut it. Have been thinking about cutting it anyway maybe go with that #2 clipper look but for now it’s long, never had long hair. Get the occasional hey mullet head rip from my friends but whatever, I always thought mullets looked cool anyway 🙂

I noticed people can sense when you care. It’s in the body language and facial expression I think. One day, you won’t care, and you’ll stare down that frat f~~~ and ask what his problem is. It probably won’t happen in the first place as you will be giving off that vibe.

My reply: “Funny you think my appearance is a democracy. It’s not. It’s a dictatorship.”

    Lol!!

I still keep fit but have stopped going to the gym

For me the gym was a big time sink. Time I’d cycled there after work, locked my bike, worked out (surrounded by c~~~s I might add) and got home, I’ve used up my evening. I can stay strong enough in less than 1/4 of the time at home. I may well re join a gym which is closer by at some point, the ultimate aim is to have enough basic workout kit at home – a bench, a pull up bar and a mat is generally enough for me.

I grew my first pube today.

Ha ha, I’m detecting sarcasm from an older, wiser MGTOW.. Well, I can’t say I didn’t expect it.
