From the state’s view point the checks are cut in both names. So both getting half will have to spend a good chunk on legal fees. The real winners are the lawyers, who if they work it right will end up with most of the money.

35% federal and what ever the state tax is taken off the top. Which should be just north of 200k. Leaving close to 400k for both, if legal issue for starters take off another 100k.

Lotto wins are NOT taxed in Canada. As much as the CDN government LOVES taxes, lotto wins are exempt (any interest earned is taxable however).

Also, I’m 99% sure that WHEN she loses in court, SHE will be responsible for all his legal costs.
