Give someone a Compliment, with the response being Criticism of you.

One thing I have never understood. Be it a family member, or someone outside my family. I pay someone a compliment. Their response is to criticize something about me.

It is, “Thank you for the compliment. Now, here is why you are s~~~.”

    I do not understand that.

Does anyone else here have this happen to them?

I’ve never had that done to me, but I’ve seen my extended family do it to each other all the time. A lot of times, my aunts will even give compliments to each other and then talk about them behind their backs.

Take your compliment back. “Look, I was just being polite. I don’t really think that dress looks good on you”.

Sometimes they harbor negative views about themselves. A compliment tears the scab off the wound. Then they project their negativity to the compliment maker and assign it to them.

In short, they loathe themselves and won’t admit it.

I think such people are insecure and think they are ‘better’ than you, so when you compliment them they mentally translate that as you patronizing them.

Think of the ‘creepy’ mentality. An average looking man approaches a woman and she thinks he’s creepy because he’s not over 6ft, with a suit and Ferrari.
